new hot dog place
If you are looking for an afternoon snack, there is a new hot dog place on 5th Ave. They make their own buns and the challah ones are especially tasty. The theme of the store is cute too.

I've eaten there several times. Really very good. A nice, quick, inexpensive alternative. I really hope they do well, it's nice to have them in the neighborhood.
-
what's the cross street? I love me a good hot dog (but ick on the mustard...give me some ketchup...and maybe onions...that blue cheese looks good too)
-
it's near 5th st.
-
Thanks!

is it as good as greys papayas?

I put in a vote for this place. Took the kids shortly after it opened. We all had a grand time. The place is owned by a couple. They are enthusiastic and friendly. They have a lunch special going for the I.S. 51 kids. The school is across from the store and that brings in a lot of business. Especially with the warm weather their business will get a boost. there is a garden in the back.

Yes, I think so. There are many topping options.

Nada. I mean it's a decent place but hot dog to hot dog it doesn't have the burnt crispiness and saltiness of a Gray's. Nor are the buns as toasted as Gray's And while there are many toppings at Willie's they're kind of bland. No spice at all in fact. The chili wasn't spicy or salty and I tasted more sugar y stuff on their "Murray" hot dog than I tasted spice. Their buns are nothing special. The Ehmer hot dogs are their best ones. -

Personally, I think Papaya King is better than Gray's Papaya as a benchmark.

That is just wrong. I'm very disappointed in you, Flexi. -

From "The Straight Dope":
Dear Cecil:
You can read the whole thing at the link above. The piece is flawed by a description of a Chicago hot dog as the ideal, but is otherwise right on!
I was sitting at the Montreal Pool Room eating my all-dressed hot dog and suddenly the question hit me: why is there no ketchup in an all-dressed? Is ketchup not as respectable a condiment as relish or mustard? Is there a conspiracy? Does Dirty Harry's remark about ketchup in a hot dog have anything to do with it? I would be so thankful if you could shine a light on this obscure bit of knowledge for a passionate and perplexed user of ketchup. --Paul Macneil, Dorval, Quebec
...
I know you don't mean to act like an alfalfa-chewing barbarian, but this is like asking why Leonardo didn't paint the Mona Lisa on black velvet. Ketchup is destructive of all that is right and just about a properly assembled hot dog (and we're talking about a pure beef hot dog, not one of those things you could serve with dressing on Thanksgiving).
...
If you go into an authentic hot dog joint and ask for ketchup on your hot dog, the counterman will pause and look you in the eye. He may or may not say, "Ketchup?" with a tone of disbelief. But you may be certain what he's thinking: "Behold this creature that walks like a man. It wants ketchup on its hot dog."
And for what it's worth, the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council (whose website is currently down), specifically states that "Council etiquette recommends against consuming ketchup on hot dogs after the age of 18."
FTW! -
Oh yeah, well I agree about the burnt crispiness. I will request mine extra done next time. With sauerkraut!

Willie you know what you are doing!!! unlike most places in park slope! congratulations on opening an awesome addition to the neighborhood - grey's papaya - are you people kidding??
-
I've been meaning to try willie's. Oh glorious weiners on baked buns..
I used to adore grey's until i got food poisoning twice. i guess they only made me happy when i was drunk or hungover. oh well. -
I laughed when I read the description of their tofu hot dog - downward dog.
-
Has anyone tried Willie's grilled carrot option? I haven't been brave enough. Otherwise, the tofu dogs are OK - though as someone else said I'd love more charred *snap* to them and the toppings could use a bit more adventurous spice.
-
I don't believe in paying more than $1.50 for a plain 'ol hot dog. A little more for toppings like maybe chili, sauerkraut, or spicy mustard. NO KETCHUP!! (sorry Flexi
) -
Pffft. More ketchup for me, then!

I tried the grilled carrot two days ago. I was a little apprehensive about it but it was damn good! It comes with avocado & cheddar cheese. The thing was juicy and tangy and went really well with the avocado and cheese. Definitely worth trying out. When I ordered it the owner made sure I knew what I was getting which leads me to believe not many people are giving it a shot.
Gotta love all the animal adoption propaganda too. So very cool of them to do that. -
I second ketchup on hot dogs - though when trying out several of the famous hot dog places in Chicago, I learned after getting yelled at at one place (though that is what they're known for) I had to make sure I ordered fries so I could get some ketchup to secretly put on the hot dog! :-'

I bet you put mayo on a pastrami sandwich too. :x -

Was that at the Wiener's Circle?YES!!! I couldn't remember the name, but I do recall one of the "bigger" women behind the counter was saying all sorts of dirty stuff to my guy friend, and even pulled a boob out!! (is that ok to say on here haha)
