Alaturka next to Chip Shop
In addition to the hot dog place I suggested in an earlier thread, I LOVED my lunch at Alaturka (Turkish) a block down. It was delicious. I recommend the hummus, cigar borek, salad, and grilled skewer plates. Everything was fresh and the portions were adequate. The staff was very nice too. No cc's for now. Seems I rarely eat on 7th Ave. anymore.
Just to be clear, this is not the new Moroccan place (Babouche?) described elsewhere on the boards where the waiters were talking to the women at the bar and ignoring the customers.
Definitely give it a try!

I live around the corner and am still in mourning over the chicken korma I would order from time to time in the Chip Shop.. gotta tell you there is no on ein this new place! I think they need to put up some drapes or curtains or something over the windows to give the impression that if you are eating in there you aren't in full view of the vagrants, yuppies, affluvia that frequesnt 5th Ave (including yours truly). Forgive the harsh state ment from someone who hasn't even tried the food yet.
What I just flashed on is how charming Convivium is because once you are outside the inside is so appealing and the front windows so obscured that you could be in any Osteria in the world and not on 5th Avenue. Given all the restaurant choices on 5th Ave you gotta do everything right!
If you don't critics like me shoot you down. -
I had dinner at Alaturka two weeks ago and it was also great. They bake their own bread there which was amazing. Kebabs were great too.
-
Is this what Comfort Zone became? I've been meaning to go there for a while if it is. The people who ran CZ seemed great and turkish food is awesome.
-
wait, where is this joint? I hate adana kebab but I like most turkish food. esp. turkish breakfast.
-
it's in the space next to chip shop that used to be their curry shop.
-
This is not the old Comfort Zone. CZ has become Zilla or Zillia or something like that.

Alaturka took over half of the Chip Shop and jamzer is right, Comfort Zone has been renamed and added a nice bar, but I like the options at Alaturka. The atmosphere at CZ is nice but the service was slow as I recall. When I'm not as hungry and I've got time to sit around, yes, I'd go to CZ. Enjoy! -
Alaturka was a total disappointment. We did an early dinner with my son, his wife and 15 month old baby. We ordered Zuchinni pancakes... came very fast.. and that was because they wee fried (like yesterday!) and served cold. We sent them back. The other app was a turkish sald.. tomatoes, cukes, feta cheese on top.. it was ok... that is a hard sald to destroy. We shared 2 entrees.. a lamb shishk that was no better than ok... what was on the plate with it was afew onions, 4 tablespoons of rise, 2 tabelspoons of carrots. Now that was "generous" because the stuffed cabbage leaves came with NOTHING on the plate. There were 4 of these.. wow.. picture a diameter of a nice chunky pen and each was 3 inches long! They tasted ok but this meager plate was $10. The service was slow, the waitress had difficulty bringing 3 glasses of water to the table without pouring them all over the place. There was only one other couple eating there at 7 on fri nite and when we left one other unlucky couple came in.
Look... truly cross this off your list. My son's comment after the meal said it all.. As we passed the Chip Sjoppe next dooor he said.."I could really go for an order of Mac and Cheese now!"
Don't bother!!
Prediction.. this will be out of business by the end of the summer if not sooner.
The Pita Hut on 9th Street bet 4th and 5th ave (it is the former deedee doughnut place) services terrific Turkish food. There are afew tables but you are best doing takeout. You will have a lovely , hearty meal at a fair price. -
We were there last week and enjoyed all our dishes esp the yogurt spinach dish. I think it's owned by a husband/wife team. The waitress (wife?) was very sweet to my daughter. We felt more like a guest in their home than a customer. I recommend it.

unfortunately, I still have no clue where that is.

Chip Shop is on 5th Avenue and either 5th or 6th Street I think (give or take a block).
Went to the new Turkish place over the weekend for lunch (Saturday). I have to admit I was a little worried when we walked up and no one was in there. But figured give it a shot. More people came in as our meal progressed.
Food was very good... portions were ok (better with some dishes than others). They are still getting into things I think but the waiter, who I believe is also one of the owners, was really sweet and the service was good.
The food was delicious though. We had the shepherd salad, humus, bread, stuffed cabbage (that was where the portion was a little small... but they were yummy!), and the chicken adana. Not sure I spelled all that correctly but you get the idea. With tax and tip it was about $42 or so. Maybe that's a little pricey but I don't mind. It's not the kind of food I'd want all the time anyway. But something different at least.
I hope they do well there. We'd go back for sure. -
Subject: We know Turkish food and we like it!
My husband is Turkish and he swears Alaturka is well done, authentic Turkish food. He's picky, so I'd go by what he says! Plus based on my own limited experience of Turkish cuisine, both here and in Turkey, I agree with him Alaturka's food is some of the best I've had.
However I totally agree with others their space needs a re-design. It's too bright and exposed, not very comfortable, so it's more like an institutional cafeteria than a restaurant. The color palette of the interior is unsophisticated, and unfashionable. They need better lighting design, more stylish tables and chairs, plus they need drapes on the windows to partially block sunlight and make it so diners don't feel on display. Right now you feel like you're in a glass fishbowl with everyone walking by staring at you. Overall the interior design definitely looks amateur and like they did it themselves. The owners are really lovely people, a sister and brother, but they are new to owning restaurants, and they should have hired a professional to do the interior design. It's a lot to spend, but it pays off big time to have a well-designed interior. -
I agree that the decor is really over the top terrible.. I ate there once with son, his wife and baby.. early dinner.. nothing better than fair.. never went back.. predoction.. out of business before the end of the year. Sorry.. owners.. just too much competition to meet..
-
Sorry, Veets, though we agree about the decor we completely disagree about the food. We served food from Alaturka to several friends who are sophisticated gourmandes, and they FLIPPED out over the food. They loved it.
-
There is nothing to be "sorry" about littlehouse.
I am happy your friend enjoyed the food from Alaturka. -
Has Alaturka closed? I walked by over the weekend and the gates were down.
-
It has been closed for over a week.
-
I passed by this afternoon. Eitherthey are doing a massive renovation (doubt that) or this place is over. The doors were open and it looked like they were taking out the kitchen which is in the back of the restaurant. Hey.. that isn't such a major job.. a very small kitchen!
See my post above from April..
Was I right again?(By the way I did eat there once after April and that gives me the right to discuss a restaurant..) -
I think it's another cursed location, unfortunately. Only Chris Sell, the Chip Shop guy, seemed to have the mojo to break the curse by putting in the Curry Shop extension to the Chip Shop. He decorated the Curry Shop to be really cozy and put a welcoming sidewalk cafe, and made it so alluring. Exactly what Alaturka was not. And it was very weird the way they sort of piled a bunch of old-looking breads on a table, so they leaned haphazardly against the window, while proclaiming that they made bread fresh daily on site. Kind of a cognitive dissonance there.
Before Curry Shop, it was empty for a long, long time. Before that it was the short-lived Black Butterfly, which I think was a soul food place. Can't remember what it was before that; some other doomed eatery. But back then, there wasn't much foot traffic on 5th, at least not after 7 or so. Now that 5th is a major bar strip, it shouldn't be so hard to draw customers... -
So what shall we say?
Good ridance to stale bread!!
I can't believe I posted that!! -

Before Black Butterfly I believe it was a shipping / mailbox store.
The gate was up this afternoon, I spoke w/a man putting new tiles on the floor. It will reopen as a Turkish restaurant under new owners. Personally I liked the old food and loved the old owners. The decor, of course, was horrid. Can only hope the new owners can get it all together. -
Good luck to the new owners. This evening we had a culinary dilemna... and a life one as well.. lol!
We had invited some people over that turned out ate vegetarian.. with many limitations... allergic to gluton, wheat.. blah ,blah.. I really can cook for anyone at this point if they just tell me what they need but the problem was we had our grandkids today and overnight and I had no time to plan and cook around the limitations of these folks' diet.. SO.. we walked across the street to Pita Hut and bought food there.. It was terrific!! Hey not a place you would sit and eat but Middle Eastern.. and we wereable to put together a table of food that went along with the limitations and tasted great. ...thumbs up. Turkish cuisine to me is a little more sophisticated and intriguing . I so wish the new owners in Alturka well.. hey fast forward 2 months.. and they wee open I would have been on the phone ordering from there!! I don't think the concept they need is all that complicated.. Cook well, aim for a lot of take out and delivery and if someone decides to eat in the space maximize the fact that it is small and can be made inviting and cozy. -
Finally made it to Mediterra last night. Had the phyllo roll as appetizer and mousaka as entree both of which were quite good. Other dishes we tried were okay/not bad. Mousaka portion was kind of small but we were treated to a complementary appetizer and complementary wine. Decor much improved over Alaturka. I guess that doesn't say much, but overall I was happy/would go back.
