timboo's
Subject: timboo's
Just moved to the neighborhood. The people who lived in our place warned us that timboo's (11th ad 5th) was "sketchy". We went there anyway and it turned out to be the best place ever. Buckets of bud, friendly older folks, drunks with kind smiles, and a jukebox with only one fault for an old skool hangout--no johnny cash.Visit it while it lasts. And I say this because I'm afraid that the gentrification of the neighborhood--i.e. the very fact that we've moved here--may limit its days.
Mea Culpa, Lord forgive us, and long live Timboo's!
Amen.

I forgive you!!
Sure after l;iving here 30 years (and I dare say I am not the oldest PS resident that posts on this site) I hate your kind but boy I am so happy that the likes of you have driven up my Real Estate value to the point where I am a multi-millionaire the day I want to sell this house. You should have been here 25 years ago when ALL the bars were old man bars and there were real old men in those places. hell...there still are and I bet they are super pissed to see the "I pay a lot of rent types" sauntering in for a cheap beer and a gawk!
Welcome to Park Slope! -
Timboo's is a a great bar. The best thing about it is it has a good mix of old timers and younger folks. It never has been too incredibly popular among the new set from what I've seen, but most people genuinely like it. Actually has a nice little backyard too.

Another old man bar is Jackie's 5th Amendment - http://nymag.com/listings/bar/jackies_5th_amendment/

Yeah, I stop by Timboo's when I want to talk to my grandparent's old friends. I bet it looks intimidating but you'll find some real friendly people in there. Kudos to you for trying it out! Usually i'm at the Commonwealth though.

Yeah, old school Brooklyn bars indeed. When my husband and I walked by Jackie's and the next one (Carriage house??) we were reminded that some things haven't changed on 5th avenue since the 80s/90s. Yep. Won't be going to either of those anytime soon. :P Nothing like getting spit at as you walk past a bar. Lovely.
But hey. That has been how parts of Brooklyn have been for a long time. I don't expect plates of cookies and lots of hugs. :P :P -
Nope Carriage House is on 7th ave.. but I wonder if you mean "Bolands" on 9th st bet 4th and 5th ave... which is a newer name of a bar that has been here forever. I think the current owner thought if they spruced up the front and put in big tv sets the old drunks would leave.. No way... they are still there but they have made friends with the cute young girls that come in there too.

Thirty years ago? That puts you right on another wave of gentrification in Park Slope. I wonder what the Irish and Italians who were here when you sauntered in said to themselves about your gawking?
...I also wonder who said bad things about Timboo's. "Sketchy" is in the eye of the beholder. Timboo's is sturdy, reliable -- a dump, to be sure; and occasionally festooned with loutish drunks -- but not a place to be feared and certainly one to enjoy. Occasionally, anyway. -
Gone but not forgotten...
Anyone remember the Roost? (I think that was the name.) It was on 7th Avenue, where Rice Thai is now. Nothing like smelling stale beer and hearing the cheers of happy drunks... at 11am. -
I believe the bar that Caaahyoko is referring to is Smith's Tavern, which underwent a major face lift in the late 90s. I've been to Jackie's plenty of times and have always been treated well. Frankly, I'm shocked that it's lasted this long.
I, too, remember The Roost. Great place. Nice mix of WWII vets, lesbians, and sanitation workers. I had many fun, drunken nights there. One time my friend and I walked in a birthday party and were served tasty slices of Betty Crocker cake with vanilla icing.
Now that Snooky's is gone, I think there are literally no "old-school" bars left on Seventh Avenue. -

Yeah, that's the one. On 5th btw 8th and 9th.
And these were patrons outside having a smoke that were so blatantly nasty. We had absolutely no intention of going in either place. And now I reeeeally have no intention of going in either place. -

Did they make any remarks about you and the hubby being together? Or were they just garden variety nasty? -

Nope username... 30 years ago there was no gentrification... the school teachers and social workers of all races were moved in by then with all the irsih and italians and every one was getting along just fine. Out of all the Brownstone neighborhoods I think PS was the least desireable.. whatever that meant... although Boerum Hill was "sketchY" then... whatever that means! -
I've never had a problem at Jackie's. In fact they've been good to me and my man. We've been able to see the NBA games there when all the other bars had NFL stuff on. We've even been treated to a free round before. But then again, I don't wear stove pipe jeans and I'm sure they can tell I'm a lush from a mile away! Hee hee!
Wait! That can't be a good thing!?!!  :-# -

And if you have teeth--which I trust you do--and are there by yourself you'll get marriage proposals galore!
Wait! That can't be a good thing!?!!  :-#

i randomly spent last saturday night at jackie's and had a blast. of all the bars in the slope, i think jackie's has one of the best jukeboxes. no mixtapes ala buttermilk or commonwealth--just a healthy dose of oldies, classic country and frank sinatra. perfect soundtrack for throwing a few back.

I don't think you get my meaning. You don't want to call it gentrification? Whatever. But you said it yourself; Park Slope was "least diesireable" when you moved here. (Which street did you tell your kids not to cross?) So, what happened after that? Did your rent go up? Yes. Did businesses come back to Fifth Avenue? Yes. Then, in the 90s, it happened again.
I'd be curious to have you, as well as you are able, explain to me how someone who moved here in the 1970s is any different from the "pay a lot of rent" types who move here today? -

Hey... you are entitled to your opinions and I don't want to debate this.. just isn't important enough to me. Live and be well in the Slope and if I said something that pushed your button I apologize. -

Yep, the combination. Like, you said, any woman with teeth would get marriage proposals there. But the interesting thing was the person who made a nasty comment in front of Timboo's was a woman. First time we've had that happen. -

Well, it's good to know that despite gentrification, etc. an inter-racial couple can still be harrassed while walking down our fair Park Slope streets. Cheers! -
long ago when smith's, cj's and fifth amendemt were the emerald triangle, timboo's was where you drank when you were banished, and cause for banishment was always vague
utlimately you ended up at duffy's -
Story about Jackie's: One time I was out with my friend, and we started hanging out with these two girls. Turns out one of them was legally blind, so when we went into Jackies she bumped into something and the bartender told us she wouldn't serve us because we were too drunk!

Ended up hammered on Bulleit and ginger ale at Bar Reis instead. -
hmm, sounds like the clever trickery of a seahag
she'll back
