Good Brooklyn lawyer? — Brooklynian

Good Brooklyn lawyer?

edited November -1 in Park Slope
I'm looking to start up a small business in Brooklyn (not Park Slope, necessarily, but that's where I live). I need a lawyer who can handle contracts, incorporation, real estate, etc. I've got recommendations from friends, but no one really local, and it would be so cool to have someone on my side who knows the neighborhoods. Anyone have good experiences or suggestions?

I went to a tax preparer who was recommended by the Brooklynian boards (Peter Morales) and had a great experience -- hoping you all can come through again!

  • Subject: to corp or not to corp

A few things to consider in New York, there is no real difference between a sub-S and full "C" in the way of business benefits. To incorporate you don't need a lawyer, just a good accountant to file your tax ID number with the state. If there are particlulars with partners and duties then you really should find good a lawyer. What type of biz are you forming?

If you dissolve your corp, the seal and a sheet of tin foil make great play money for the kids.
  • I'm looking to form a retail business. It's not incorporating I'm so worried about (I've been told an LLC can be created with a phone call) -- it's the real estate and financial stuff that I don't want to screw up. It would just be great to have someone on my side...
  • Subject: still looking for a good Brooklyn lawyer -- any recs?

I'm still toiling away at starting up that retail business I mentioned here, and realizing I may have a number of small investors. I need a lawyer to help me figure out what models and precedents for this kind of investor structure I can use. Then I'll need someone to help me draw up incorporation papers, negotiate a lease, etc. And I would really, really like it to be someone based in Brooklyn, if possible. And my budget is tiny, so someone community-minded and inexpensive would be ideal. Sure, not too much to ask, right? =)

Anyone have or know a great Brooklyn-based small business lawyer?
  • Try Ed Fusco...he's on 7th Avenue off of 8th Street

    Kurt Roth. 718 596-1603

He closed on our apartment, I think he might deal with these types of contracts as well.

Tell him Brad and Lindsay referred you.
  • Ann Northern might be able to do it. She's good.

    Ann C. Northern
    Attorney at Law
    26 Court Street
    Suite 1600

You can tell her Dave and Gwen referred you, but I doubt that will get us or you anything :-)
  • Why not walk into the other retail establishments in the area you want to be and ask for their recs? If a lawyer's done a good job for a neighboring/similar business, then maybe you can expect they'll be able to meet your needs.
