New neighbor -- just moved in
I just moved in to the neighborhood that I thought was Prospect Heights, but after reading some of the posts here--I wonder. Heh.
Any advice for grocery shopping, restaurants that deliver (especially chinese)?
Most important--can anyone recomment a trusted person to come feed my cat if I'm away for the weekend?

why don't you think it's prospect heights? what streets are you on?
-
I'm between Franklin and Classon. Earlier posts noted that Washington is the eastern border of the neighborhood. I think it SHOULD be Franklin because the shuttle is a structural boundary.
Anyway...
I'm also looking for a pet supply store where I can get a nice cat condo. -
I have a great cat sitter if you are still looking. You can PM me and I will give you her name and number.
-
I can also recommend someone for cat sitting if you PM me.
You are in Crown Heights by the way, not that there's anything wrong with that. -
Search the CH board, there are a couple of threads on both places that deliver and grocery options. Check your zip, you might be in Fresh Direct delivery zone.

So you're saying that Washington's position in the East vs. West debate doesn't matter -- it all comes down to which side of the tracks you're from. -
IMO, you're in Prospect Heights. There are different opinions on this, so feel free to claim whatever neighborhood you wish.
-
if you're at 475 st. marks, fresh direct delivers, and there's a Met supermarket on vanderbilt. a couple doors down from the Met, there's also ACME, which is a pretty good pet store and sells both cheap and organic type food, and probably cat condos.
ummm...i don't remember the names of the places, but we got a few chinese menus under our door and ordered from one the other night that was good, cheap, and came quickly. i'll repost when i know the name and number. -
Thanks everyone! I'm gonna consider this Prospect Heights, as Jack has given me lisence to do.

If you have any more tips for living in the area--please keep them coming! -
Sorry to tell you but you are in Crown Heights. Guess you were tricked by your realtor and are overpaying. Why does it matter matter?
-
yeah, why does it matter so much where you live? i am a bit sick of this Prospect Heights/Crown Heights debate on the board! you live where you live, labels are just labels.
welcome to Crown Heights. -
you're in crown heights baby
and besides, haven't you heard, upgrading out:

Crown Heights, Prospect Heights, Western Crow Hill, Eastern Park Slope...
We all live in a contested terrain of signifiers and signposts. There is only the game, we do not have a choice but to play. Check your local listings. -
Wow, Neene. I suddenly feel so damn edgy.
Just for shits & giggles, anyone care to foster a Crown Heights North/Bed-Stuy border debate? Yeah, yeah... Atlantic Ave. is a pretty clear line of demarcation--literally on the other side of the train tracks--but still... "Cuz that's where Hov is from." Ghetto cache! Priceless!
Thanks for sharing, Neene. That was, um, frighteningly illuminating. I guess that means rents will keep rising then? Blecch. -
Yeah, any neighborhood that is deemed edgy by young hipsters will probably become the opposite pretty damn quickly.

I think it's a shame that there is still such a stigma related to Crown Heights from the notable riots that many people, apparently exclusively newcomers, don't want to tell friends and family they live here. Certainly the real estate business wants to extend Prospect Heights eastward too.
I think it's time be proud of Crown Heights for the improvements in communty relations, and for the pride of individuals and groups working to improve the quality of life here in general.
Someday usage and convention may change the common understanding that Crown Heights Begins at Washington Ave (it used to be Flatbush!), but I hope not. -
yeah ph is expanding. so if you think youre in ph say ph
. don't like the native phers scare you thinking youre not
. they like their exclusive nabe name lol. -
I've got no beef against CH - love it there and want to head ... across the street more often. I can understand though, people's reactions. partly b/c I live on washington which is not at all as schmancy pants as vanderbilt, and partly b/c I lived in harlem when it was "zomg, it's so awesome there now!" and the only restaurants opened after 9 p.m. were the bulletproof chinese joint and a fancy place on 116th (approx 20 blocks from my apt) that was taking advantage of gentrification. and bars? hello! there was a chinese place that had a "lounge" - I never went in b/c everyone going in looked like a seriously scary person (I know a lot of crack heads, unfortunately, and all of these folks looked the part). there was also a bar on 5th ave and like ... 137th?... that was sorta like the harlem version of mooney's. since I didn't have the friend-base in harlem that I have here, I didn't bother with that joint, either.
so. I can understand why people are put off by CH. but I think that in 5ish years, people will be kicking themselves for not taking advantage now. I love heading to places in CH, and can't wait to go to places like saje and the mexican joint. and I'm really looking forward to what will come next. I like that a lot of folks that live in the neighborhood are the folks that are opening up the new places. -
i'm proud

Subject: edgy's still not quite worth police protection
Um, the name Washington might not be as fancyschmants, but you have all the same, if not better, amenities. But, I digress. Edgy hip or no, when you're going to a $2 million Y on Bedford Ave and your car gets smashed into between 8 and 10 pm within view of your elliptical machine with built-in cable tv, you're still in a GHETTO people.
Sorry. I'm suffering here. And the cops don't seem to think $5 million dollar apartment buildings should make any difference in their response time. Their mouths, not mine. So if I was to pick egdy and cool or residential, highly foot trafficked, and totally nerdy, I'd pick the latter any day. -
Hey -- I can cat sit, if you ever need. I'm in the neighborhood, can provide references, etc.
(that goes to anyone else, as well!)
you can PM me
thanks : )
& welcome to crown heights! I love it here : ) -
Hell, I'm going to start telling people I live in "East New York". That'll impress those looking for edgy.
Howdy, Stranger!
