Help Me Eat Ft. Greene/Clinton Hill! — Brooklynian

Help Me Eat Ft. Greene/Clinton Hill!

OK, so now that I have your attention. My lease is up June 30th and I don't want to make the mistake of not having experienced everything Ft. Greene/Clinton Hill has to offer should I happen to move off to another neighborhood. I've decided that I will attempt to eat as many of the fine eateries in our neighborhood as possible. I'm also ashamed to say that I haven't met many of my neighbors so I'm also looking for a little companionship on my mission. Interested? Also please let me know if I have left something of my list. • I would swap your "High Priority" Thomas Beisl with your "Low Priority" Stonehome. While the weiner schnitzel at Beisl is very good, that's probably the only good thing I can say about the place (terrible service - even on non-BAM nights, terrible attitudes, & questionable other dishes make for a frustrating experience). Stonehome is surprisingly wonderful. It took YEARS for my husband and I to finally eat anything there (apart from their charcuterie plate which is also very good though their bread is terrible). I'm not a big chicken fan and never order it in restaurants but my husband did and now I crave it daily. Also, they do nice things. For example, we wanted to share the pasta dish (the one with mushrooms and squash) as a second course and they brought it in two dishes without our asking. Oh, and I would also add Bonita to your list. Their spicy margarita is lovely (albeit a bit weak).
  • I would swap Los Pollitos and Kush. Los Pollitos is good but it's nothing special. It's the same Americanized Mexican you can get all of the city. Kush, on the other hand, is an incredibly unique, eclectic mix of French, Middle Eastern and African. Not only is it unique, but it's just damn good too. (and damn affordable).

To me Kush is one of the signature restaurants of the CH/BS border area.

I agree, Kush is excellent and they really care about the neighborhood, they donated food to the last block meeting and they hire locally
  • Thanks for the suggetsions. I should have added Bonita to the already eaten column.

So does anyone actually want to come eat at some of these places with me!? :D
  • Quite a few of those Medium Priority choices should go to High Priority in my opinion.

Myrtle Avenue Has some Great Restaurants and I hear a couple more good ones are on the way.

Definately Try Abristro, Maggie Brown, Kush and Pillow.
  • I would move Junior's from High to Low. The cheesecake (the only reason ever to go there) has dropped from good to average. I would put Cake Man Raven on there in its place.
  • Junior's is totally "meh."
  • I just wanted to put in a good word for Thomas Beisl as I've had completely the opposite experience. Every time I've been in there, the staff have been incredibly warm and friendly, and it has such a laid-back, neighborhood feel. That said, I wouldn't make it a high priority, as the food is good, not mind-blowing.
Luz is quite good with such a warm vibe and delicious cocktails. Olea is sometimes quite good and sometimes mediocre but one of the most beautiful spaces ever. I walk past it on my way home every night, and I always envy the people sitting inside.
I think places like Tillie's and Pillow Cafe are great as everyday, neighborhood places, but probably not someplace you have to rush to experience once before you go.
  • Oh, AppleSister,

I wish I had gone to Beisl on the nights you went! The last time I was there (the time that broke the camel's back), I was having a lovely solo date night and decided to treat myself to the aforementioned weiner schnitzel. I was largely ignored by the staff, when the weiner did come though, it was delicious (as per usual), but then, later, as I sat with my empty plate for a good half hour, the bussers came out in force with black Heafty bags and bus pans. The bags were placed on the backs of chairs and a bus pan placed on the table next to me where the bussers proceeded to clear every table (but mine), clattering plates and silverware literally right next to me. Then the manager? came out in a beater and camo pants and began to loudly berate the servers for something that had nothing to do with what was going on around me. This was a Friday night around 8PM. It was TOTALLY absurd and vaguely surreal. Finally, I had to infiltrate the the yelling manager and cluster of frightened servers at the bar to ask for my check. That too spiralled into chaos. It was sad.
  • We've enjoyed your "low priority" Martinos on Mrytle but they are a coffee and lunch place and not a dinner spot. We've only been a few times and the owner seems to remember us, which always feels good. We also like Maggie Brown

You also don't have "Brown Betty Cafe" on your list, which you should try. They do a very nice job with brunch.
  • I would add Grand Dakar on Grand Ave. bet. the Classon & Clinton/Washington stops, off of Lafayette. Excellent food, great value.

Also disagree with an above poster RE: Pillow Cafe, which has now moved down Myrtle, bet. Ryerson & Grand. May be a humble place, but the coffee is the best in the City, and the food is damned good, too. Don't miss out!
