  • I know about a new mom's group that meets in the Tea Lounge on Wednesdays at 10:00am.
  • Subject: Clarify Your Slash?

Would that be libertarian socialists who are ALSO anarcho-syndicalists or do you mean you would accept EITHER libertarian socialists OR anarcho-syndicalists? This could be crucial in determining which size elevator the quorum will assemble in.

Oh, and if you could indicate a preference between the Judean People's Front and the People's Front of Judea, that would be helpful as well.
  • There was a regular NORML meeting but we kept forgetting where and when it was held.

I wish I could invite you to our large weekly socialist libertarian/syndico-anarchist meeting, but as you know, we're your sworn enemies.
  • Sloper, I don't know the answer to your question, but maybe you could find out on Meetup.com whether there's anything like you're looking for in Park Slope.
  • there is an anarchist group that meets in brooklyn(not in park slope). I have to remember the name ... unfortunately i don't think that park slope has many anarchists or at least ones that meet.

I'm sure everyone (except ultra wealthy corporate types) has a bit of anarchist spirit in them somewhere if they live in park slope - calling up the old bohemian spirit of yesterday.

there are groups I'm sure that would love to have someone who's even talking about that!!

If you are looking for pure activist groups there are some of those... Perhaps a bit more environmentally oriented. there are anti-war groups... it kind of goes like that.

thanks for posting! let us know if you find something else...
  • Kidding aside, there are several community based groups dealing with zoning, over development, contextual development and housing issues. PM me if you want more info.

And, there's always your Community Board, depending on your block, either CB7 or CB6.
  • Or the Co-op.
  • Does anyone remember the Mondaca (spelling? Library people? They used to meet in the Mondaca Librry on 9th Street and 6th Ave.
  • thanks everyone, much much appreciated! yes, Tex Antoine, they are both essentially the same thing but with two different names, some people prefer or use one name over the other which is why i listed both in case people have heard of only one....

  • You might be a few years too late in this nabe, when those beliefs and energies were focused into starting places like the Coop (in 1973, still in full force) and other community organizations.

My first reaction on reading your post was to suggest you consult the NYPD . . . it's just now coming out how much they were monitoring supposed radicals in the lead up to the RNC . . .
The NYTimes has been all over the story, lo these three years later . . .

indymedia might be a better place to look than Brooklynian
    :D
  • Subject: energy still here...?

Wouldn't this kind of energy and these beliefs still be welcome?? and perhaps necessary, especially with the creepy crawl of homogenization?

Is Brooklynian only the 'new' Park Slope or can it/does it encompass elements of the 'old?'

    thanks.

I say this because perhaps we're all resigned without realizing it to the gentrification and loss of this energy which started things, as you say, like the Co-Op. Maybe there's a large wake-up call that needs to be started. I lived in the West Village before it became like it is today but way past when it had an artsy/bohemian spirit, and Park Slope could easily become the Marc Jacobs/trendy hotel area that that now is. I lived there in the early 90's to 2000 and I will tell you that all sense of community was gone by then. And I'm sure it existed at some point, as it does now in Park Slope but can easily go away.
