Serious Assault the 77th is Doing Nothing About! — Brooklynian

Serious Assault the 77th is Doing Nothing About!

edited November -1 in Prospect Heights
On Friday night at around 9:30, Momhammed, one of the three main guys at Deli Cup (773 Washington, the deli that does sell beer), was seriously, seriously assaulted by several people who were upset about the outcome of a lottery ticket. He was beaten so bad that his teeth were falling out of his mouth as he was covered in blood and drifting in and out of consciousness after the attack.

Needless to say he is an Arabic man and it seems as if the police from the 77th would rather look the other way on this one. They have the videotape of the attack, yet have made no arrests on the matter. Hearsay states that the motivator of the attack is in the neighborhood, but the cops have not pursued her. It iseems as if it is safe to say that the police feel as if they don't have to give a shit about an Arabic man beaten in the early evening behind the counter of his own store. I am going to write to news outlets and ask them to contact the 77th for access to the videotape. As savage as this attack was, it is awful for the precinct to downplay it due to a presumed lack of public interest in the attack. It is appalling no matter who it is. It is said that he was beaten so bad and the surgery will be so extensive, there may have to be three reconstructives done on his face. He is at King's County and is unrecognizeable. Let's demand answers from the 77th! Moreso, we should get the media in on this as it is a SEVERE and extremely VIOLENT hate crime against a decent man.

  • Where do you get all your misinformation from? Why do you assume nothing is being done? The perpetrator is known to the victim and will be arrested shortly. Every thread on here does not have to entail Race baiting or anti-Police sentiment. Although i'm sure your fictional twist on the events of the other night will provide you a greater response.
P.S. If "hearsay states" something about the attack why not come forward and help out Mohammed.? I guess not, you'd probably lose your "street cred" for "snitchin" son!!!
  • Keep us posted King, especially when that arrest happens. And I have contacted NBC, CBS, and NY1 on the matter.
  • Also a Hate crime does not include assaulting someone over a lottery ticket, unless the Crime was motivated specifically by hate. The victim was not beaten because he's Arabic. Please feel free to call the news, while you're at it, call Al Sharpton see if he's outraged too. The kids laughing on the street at Mohammed walking to the ambulace with his teeth knocked out certainly weren't.
  • I'm crticizing the investigation, not the hate crime aspect of it. How come there was nothing in the Post? Daily News? Not even in the Police Blotter? How come no police have come back to the scene since the crime occurred to tell employees what is going on with the investigation?
  • An assault in Prospect Heights is not newsworthy. Did you hear about the guy whose throat was slashed and found dead in a bath tub last week on Eastern pkwy? (Probably not) How do you criticize an investigation in which you know nothing about? For your information the employees that you're talking about watched the whole incident take place and did nothing, not even call 911.
  • It really bites my ass when people assume that the police are doing nothing.

Just because they haven't come back to the store to update the employees doesn't mean anything. The responsibility is to the victim of the crime not witnesses. How do you even know that no detectives have been back? Because the workers there said so? Hearsay?

This is not a hate crime. It is an assault. Brutal? Yes. But still not a hate crime just because the victim and perp are of different race.

The media has no right to the video tape. If the dept. feels that it would help the investigation then they can release the tape. In the meantime that video tape is evidence and not for public viewing.

The detective working the case must also have a coherent and cooperative victim. If the victim is in too much pain, unable to see, heavily medicated it will be difficult to obtain a description and to have the victim view a photo array. Even with the videotape, to have a solid case they need the vic to make an ID of the perp.

Rev. Al only cares if the "victim" is black and the "perp" is not. Rev Al has nothing to say about the high rate of black males being identified as perps by victims. He cares nothing at all about black on black crime. I'd love to see Rev. Al and Charles Barron speak out against black on black crime but they never will. They just want to make excuses and defer blame.
  • any word from the news, leeho? thanks for the update - do you know anything else?
  • the attack aside (and I'm not belittling the horror regarding it, or trying to say it's not worth discussing), I'm really fascinated at the difference between perceived response and actual response. LeeHo has obviously talked with the employees at this bodega and the perception he's getting (and PR, hearsay is only an issue in a court of law - it may affect how the police investigate (in terms of the reliability of the statement) but is not an impediment in terms of use in an investigation) is that the police are doing nothing and that the 77th doesn't care about what happened. what KwoaC and PR are saying is that the police are actively investigating and have identified the people involved in the crime, so the perception of these two users (who may or may not be police officers, police dept employees - we don't know details about them) is that LeeHo is jumping to conclusions, and that the employees of the bodega are overreacting to their perceptions.

I think this illustrates the fears most folks have about the police and the frustration the police feel while dealing with a community. so .. isn't it the job of the community affairs officer(s) to try to bridge this gap? I, at least, am concerned about my perception of a 'crime spree' on washington avenue - the stabbing outside of the bodega at lincoln, the shooting outside of ripple, the beating given to a bodega worker at st. johns, etc. and, heck, no we didn't hear about the stabbing on e.pkway, KwoaC. and I, for one, would like to know about it.
  • What goes on behind the scenes of criminal investigations is not necessarily information the public in entitled to. In this case particularly, the less people discussing this publicly will help the NYPD catch the perpetrators more swiftly. Also due to the fact that Bar owner and other neighboring store owners called the Police that night, it appears theres a little reluctance on the part of the victim and the other store employees to prosecute or even aid in the investigation.
  • Or the co-worker who was working with Mohammad has very little mastery of the English language to make a 911 call and provide information on the spot.
  • Whatever happened to the cop on the beat? You'd think that perhaps on a Friday or Saturday night there could be a cop walking the blocks of this busy neighborhood which has seen it's share of violence recently.

Get the cops out of their cruisers and on the beat. Give them bicycles if they feel the need to move around.
  • To reiterate an earlier post by Neene. Please write to the the 77th precinct and request that beat cops return to the streets.
    Here is the info:
    Deputy Inspector John Cosgrove
    127 Utica Avenue
    Brooklyn, NY 11213

Also, the Daily News reporter Errol Louis lives in CH and covers the area. I would contact him directly. I did once before and he responded.
  • The cops are too busy looking for legal parking spots.
  • Leeho, how about making an effort to get the real story before making crazy allegations? If you want the cops to get more involved, accusing them of ignoring crimes against muslims isn't the best ways, especially when it sounds like you're wrong. This board really seems to bring out the worst in everyone.
  • You are sooooo right. This is the absolute worst in me, Mista Colo-rad-o.
  • King without a crown wrote: The cops are too busy looking for legal parking spots.
....Or better yet, live in the neighborhood you patrol so you don't need to look for a parking spot.

I'm too busy stuck in traffic caused by double parking cops to read your post.

    ....jokes.
  • sorry for the late notice on this
i got dates mixed up but as bojolais posted on the CH Board
the 77th precinct council meeting is tonight at 7:30
why not come and ask questions
if i am in an "outgoing" mood i will raise it

    Bedford Central Presbyterian Church
    Corner of Dean & Nostrand
    1200 Dean St, Brooklyn, NY

LeeHo - I assume you know that cops aren't allowed to work in their home precinct. I'm not making excuses for illegal parking, but let's make practical suggestions and get the facts straight rather than inflame the situation.
  • In response to a request for Beat Cops, it's currently in the making, with The Community Policing Unit to be hitting the streets shortly. Unfortunately that alone will not bring a reduction in violent crime. Summer is approaching fast, the community has to be the eyes and the ears of the street, criticizing the Police Dept. only serves to broaden the already present gap between the community and its Police.

P.S. I didn't see LeeHo at tonites community meeting
  • I wish I could have been at the meeting tonight. unfortunately, I have an unmissable meeting in midtown at 6:30 pm on mondays so ...

in any case, I'm glad the beat cops will be back soon.

frankly, the police officers I've spoken to in my nyc life have all been great - but I only get to meet them after I witness a shooting. they're not on my block, or around my nabe on a daily basis. at least, not in a way I notice. and I tend to come home pretty late at night b/c of my hectic work schedule. in any case, I look forward to increased presence.
  • KwoaC, as if you know what LeeHo looks like.
  • King without a crown wrote: criticizing the Police Dept. only serves to broaden the already present gap between the community and its Police.
In a free country, it is a right and a privilege to criticize anything we want to. There are many a people who criticize, and rightfully so, many things many members of police departments do. It is a fair and balanced right of being an American. Isn't that one the freedoms the so-called blue curtain heroes are protecting? My right to free speech? A universal American right in the fucking constitution?

If the police made an effort to truly police rather than dictate or gain free parking and then have the audacity to bitch about it, I'd be open to the openness and cooperation you are mentioning. But, often times, not alll, but often times, I see an abuse of power and a machismo that is simply repulsive.

Please stop defending everything a cop does on these boards! Stop using the generic Bushism of heroes without an adequate defintion of one to describe yourselves. This is exactly the problem; the high horse mentality that countless officers have. The abuse of power mentality.

Whatever. It has all been said before, someplace, somewhere, and way more articulately than I am capable of saying.

So, KwoaC, my ears and eyes are open. I know what to expect most of the time from my neighborhood. Yet, I usually don't know what to expect in you boys in blue most of the time.
  • well if LeeHo was there, he didn't ask about the incident,
i did and the officer i spoke to was there friday night and also said that 2 men were brought in as a result of the investigation.

btw, it's inane that anyone has feelings about police misconduct that they are willing to voice here yet not at the precinct council meetings,
people do stand up at these meetings and ask some really tough questions on the subject, ranting here might serve to let off a little steam (or stir up a little trouble) but it's not going to go a long way in changing anything.

(and no cynical comments please about things not changing,
in my opinion we have a really strong DA & precinct commander as well as some newly elected officials who are really working for this community. there is a also a core group of very committed residents who could use some help, but without your voice and your support and yes, your energy it's just going to take that much longer)
  • A really strong DA? You must be kidding! Ask any hard working Brooklyn cop what they think about this "strong" DA. The DA's office "declines prosecution", drops charges, offers pathetic deals to perps. It's disgusting what some perps get away with because the it's "a tough one" as the ADA will call it. Don't even get me started on Brooklyn juries. They are a total joke.

As for community policing...I don't disagree with their being an advantage to having cops on the street on foot or bicycle or scooter. The big problem for the 77 is a complete lack of manpower. Quite often there are only 4 cars answering calls in the 77 on a 4x12 plus a "report car" that primarily handles non priorities. Now one car goes down to Empire Blvd to get meals for prisioners and another car is handling a missing child. You are suddenly down to a total of 3 cars. When a shots fired, assault, robbery, burg come over atleast two of those cars will be going. You're down to 1 car to cover the entire precinct and nobody has even taken a "lunch" break. There are probably 13 prisioners in a cell that should really only have about 5 but there is nobody available to take them to central booking. There are only two cops working inside who answer the phone (which is always ringing), helping everybody that walks in to make a complaint, tending to and guarding prisioners in the cell, performing inventories of evidence, property, radios, summonses, dispatching 311 calls to that one car that is available, etc...
  • i'll pick up the DA discussion in the near future, though i happen to agree with not turning people arrested on petty offenses or small drug charges into hardened criminals by throwing them into jail

there might be a lack of manpower in the 77, no one is disputing that but one of the benefits of community policing is to improve community police relations (and that swings both ways) and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out why that would be to everyone's advantage.

there is more than one answer to any problem,
sorry, as a member of the bleeding heart liberal camp who chooses to believe
that if you treat people with dignity and respect, chances are that will come back to you
and that if everyone takes responsibility for their own little piece of the world, the world will be a better place
and that after you identify the problem, you actually have to do something about it,
    and...
    well i won't bore you

so if you would like to work 1 police plaza to give us increased manpower,
i'll do my best to work the avenues where i feel most effective

You don't see your view as being just a little to the other extreme? As usual, the truth lies somewhere in between.
  • WhyFi wrote: As usual, the truth lies somewhere in between.
    Agreed.
  • It's not about defending the Police, but obviously this shit stirring thread was meritless. If you're going to start a topic, atleast do some research first. The funny thing is that, I'm sure many people on this board actually fall for your divisive posts.

nah, his assessment seems pretty fair to me.

He's just scolding us for our own good! Never question authority, people!
