I'm still waiting to hear about the poor guy found in his bathtub. did the police figure out who killed him? are they being brought up on charges? was this a random crime? -

some of us pick up their share and we get little gold stars and halos -
and everytime a bell rings an angel gets it's wings...

The people are called Arabs and they speak Arabic. Not all Arabs are Muslims and ... this is the shocker... not all Muslims are Arabs! Would we be better off if all the police were Arabs? Without a doubt.

I'll second that! then we could implement "eye for an eye" type laws. -
Subject: BATHTUB INCIDENT
I want to hear more about the guy in the bathtub....PLEASE.... -
Last week a man found dead in his bathtub with his throat slashed at 1051 Eastern pkwy.
* Detectives are investigating a man's murder in a Crown Heights apartment.
The victim, in his 40s, was found with his throat slashed in the bathtub in his Eastern Parkway apartment near Schenectady Avenue at 9:30 a.m. yesterday, cops said.
Investigators were trying to determine a motive and searching for a suspect. -
Holy SHIT! I agree with Parade Rest for once! He just pointed out the ineptitude of this fine city we live in. It is painfully obvious by his post that there is not enough money/police to do it's job in the 77th.
PR. Thank you for putting your department in such black and white terms.
Seriously. Your post was eye-opening.
Disturbing as well, yet eye opening. -

You don't see your view as being just a little to the other extreme? As usual, the truth lies somewhere in between.
nah, his assessment seems pretty fair to me.
He's just scolding us for our own good! Never question authority, people!
i usually agree "sort of" with LeeHo, but this time i straight out agree. LeeHo is entitled to his opinion just as much as KWOC. and as WhyFi points out, they are the extremes... leaving the rest of us somewhere inbetween - sounds good to me! -
I haven't even gotten into the fact that the NYPD still uses typewriters (that never have ribbon), computers running on Windows 98 (that only access dept. databases, no word, no internet, etc), many DOS based computers and programs that are vital to operations, if you're lucky there is one half working fax machine in the whole building, there are one or two computers available for entering reports but there is probably somebody using it to enter all of the reports for that day so a cop with an arrest can't get his paperwork entered in a timely fashion causing prisioners to await transport to central booking, cops aren't issued passwords to all of the computer systems they need to use on a daily basis, I should start a new topic or atleast a new sentence...
Did you know that the laptops in the cars basically only run license plates, drivers licenses and does basic warrant checks? The cop can't see the warrant or what it's for. A person criminal record isn't accesible. They don't get the jobs they are assigned on the computer. They can't see previous incidents at that location. Can't see pictures of perps... -
OK I have to ask this question. How far is all of this "crime spree" that Alafairnadia mentioned in the post above from Franklin and St Johns? I'm new to the area and just getting my bearings.
Still didn't catch how far down Eastern Parkway the poor guy in the bathtub was.
Isn't this an unusual amount of crime recently? -

Nope, not unusual. Just wait till the warm weather arrives. That's when there is lots of standing around out on the street. Drug dealers, gang members, and random drunk/drugged people get into spats and violence sometimes erupts.

It happens less in bad weather, because people are indoors watching tv or playing video games or reading books or building models of the Starship Enterprise or whatever. -

Interesting. I'd fire the IT people -- upgrading to an open source platform running on obsolete Pentiums and a single DB for everything could be done on a pretty small budget by an army of skript kiddzz.

Parade, how much of this is a result of the "culture" of the police department? By that I mean, its basically an institution that grows from within. Driving initiatives like technolgy seems to only happen when you get someone who has a knowledge/interest coupled with being high up enough in the organization to actually be able to force change. Other than that there is a "this is how we've always done it" mentality that seems to exist. Am I wrong about this?

Subject: I'm disgusted by what happened to Mo...
Mo has always been one of my favorite people in the neighborhood.
He is truly a sweet man. He knows me and my roommates' names and makes sure to ask us how we are all doing.
At Christmas time, he gives us all presents and wishes us the best of holidays.
I have been unfortunate enough to experience hostility towards Mo on many occasions over nothing in particular. People are rude to Mo just to be rude, and it makes me disgusted.
Young kids kicking Mo's cat when it was just a tiny kitten in front of their blind mothers, men screaming at Mo for not getting the Tylenol right (the patron was the one who had been wrong), and women cursing him for not producing their change quick enough are all incidents I've witnessed in that deli.
No person deserves this treatment.
I am sick and tired of this neighborhood falling victim to absolute ignorance.
It's been happening for a while.. but now I'm just angry.
Those people need to be caught and put away for a VERY long time.
Crime in this neighborhood has generally been provoked in the recent past. This time, a goog, decent, innocent man has been targeted.
It all needs to stop!
Why anyone would harm such a genuinely nice human being is beyond my comprehension. -
I couldn't agree with you more, DayLAte. That guy is a great man. He doesn't deserve such shit.

did you move here with your daughter??

back to the topic at hand --
LeeHo how's Mohammad your deli guy doing? It just rots, what happen to him. -
Sorry. I should have reworded that. No I didn't move here with my daughter, but I have no prior experience with Brooklyn and am just learning what's what in the area and getting an idea of the street layouts. But I am getting an idea where things are. People seemed friendly enough when we were moving her in and it's just a bit unsettling for a parent to hear of the things that have been going on in that area.
And I hope that who ever hurt Mohammad is caught. No one deserves to be hurt for any reason. -
It's fucked up that this happened. Those people who did that are fucked up as well as the people that UrJustADayLate described.
-
This happens day in and day out in the city, unfortunately most people just turn a blind eye until it hits home. The days of being friendly with your local supermarket owners and knowing the name of your butcher are rapidly fading. The more people living closer together, the further and more removed we become as a society. What happened to Mohammed is just one of many stories that are usually left untold.

Have you considered moving to Iowa? -

Des Moines real estate is heating up - I'd try North Dakota instead. -

It's fucked up in every case. I don't think it has anything to do with living close together though, there are plenty of big cities where things like this don't happen much. -
It goes back to living by the Golden Rule. It's as simple as that. Treat people the way you want to be treated and the world would be a much better place to exist.
No matter what religion, race, or anything else you might want to throw into the mix.
And I've been to Iowa.
The air has that constant smell of cow flotsom.
Took my daughter there to look at a school when she was going to her first year of college in Manhattan, as we landed in Cedar Rapids at 9PM....all she could say was "Where are the lights?" They were all asleep and the land was dark.
It definitely wasn't the place for her.
And I don't ever agree that this is to be chalked up to living in a city. These people don't have any morals or humanity at all.
It doesn't have to be this way -
As far as I last heard, it sounds like he might be in the hospital for months. That's right, months! He can't really communicate and he is pretty drugged up. I haven't seen him yet, but a friend of mine has and that is what he told me. It's an absolute crime for that to have happened to him.
-
FYI-The perp turned himself in at the 77 pct a few days ago and was charged with attempted murder.
-
That is some really good news.
-
Throw the book at that asshole
-
Subject: End of reason
I thought The Golden Rule is something everyone knows, whether it be formally learned or just moral instinct. Of COURSE these people wouldn't want what they did to Mo to be done to them. But they're untouchable.
It's almost like group individuation. No longer is it ME doing this "bad thing," but everyone I know who is right here with me, supporting this. And, therefore, no one really needs to take responsibility. Because I'm acting as a part of a whole.
Just as we are all here as a group coming together, there are those who do these "bad things" out there doing the same.
We are ALL (obviously) angry about things in this neighborhood. I'm angry when I get harassed almost daily, minding my own business, walking home or to the store. I'm angry about the Mo incident. I'm angry at seeing men running by the laundrymat with guns after I heard gunshots. Some just have the capacity to take it to a physical level. I don't think I'll ever be able to understand that capability. I think that's the most terrifying thing about things like this that happen every day all over the world.
Sorry 'bout the rant. I'm bored on a rainy Sunday...
Howdy, Stranger!
