vet care
Hi,
I have a one-year-old Italian Greyhound with a luxating patella (dislocating knee). Does anyone know of a good orthopaedic vet? I have generally taken my animals to Animal Kind and the care provided seems ok. For a problem that will require orthopaedic surgery should I consider taking my dog to the Animal Medical Center in Manhattan? Is the AMC (or whatever it is called) more expensive than Animal Kind? Is it more state of the art?
Thanks so much for your help with this.

yes, yes, yes. go to a specialist for specialized surgery. AMC is great for that sort of thing.
there are a number of great vets out there. this is a link to NYMag's article on the subject (Dog Owners: bookmark the link. the advice in there is sound, and their choices are good ones. you may need to reference it one day). the end of the article mentions a couple of orthopedic surgeons, i believe. good luck!

In early 2002 my dog Rasputen snapped a tendon in his right front wrist/ankle? My vet sent me to Garden State Veterinary Specialists in New Jersey. I know it's not in NYC but they did an amazing job with him. He had to have the bones fused so he could walk without pain. The doctors, vet techs, and other staff were great. Rasputen was able to walk and run after the surgery. Dr. Scavelli (head of GSVS) is mentioned in the article shishkab recommended. It was worth the time spent getting out there.

i used oradell when we had to get my cat's heart checked out last year, and when i lived in bergen county that's where we took all our pets...always good service. -
oradell has boarded cardiologists, (as well as a ton of other boarded vets). my kitty has a murmur so when i, too, lived in bergen county they were great to us.

They are on Long Island in Hicksville - but you can't do any better than the Center for Specialized Veterinary Care. www.vetspecialist.com
They even have a "compassionate care" center which is basically like a hotel room where you can spend the night with your pet while he/she recovers. They do many amazing things there.
