anyone bike to work? — Brooklynian

anyone bike to work?

I want to start riding to work again (I'm in Times Square/Midtown West) and was wondering if anyone else rides in the morning and what their route is. Wouldn't be bad having someone to ride with--just be warned I get in early

  • I don't bike myself, but if I were to, I would take the brooklyn bridge to chambers to the west side hwy path. It's not the shortest but it's the most car free. I guess the bb to the east side paths would might be quicker but it's not nearly as nice.

The shortest would be the Manhattan Bridge, head north on the bike path on lafayette (I think) and that goes to Union Square. You then have 28 blocks of non-bikepath roads until you hit times square. I'm not sure I understand why but the bike path moves to Lexington or 3rd from Union Square.
  • I would take Reade or Murray to West St. and take the path to W.43rd or W.44th (whichever goes east). With the Intrepid in dry dock pedestrian traffic is almost nill.
  • I take the Williamsburg up to the West Side from Prospect Heights... about an 8 mile ride, not too bad.
  • The Brooklyn Bridge has too many tourists, I feel like I"m playing frogger.

In terms of avenues, I usually take First Avenue up to 49th St, but there's no official bike lane and in certain parts people drive like maniacs (I was hit on the shoulder last week by a rearview mirror of a truck.

I might just try going west, even though it adds time onto my commute, at least there's not very many traffic lights.
  • Isn't there a bike path on the FDR service? I'm going to take Allen Street south bound, then make a left at the FDR North service lane and hop on the path the next time I bike to Manhattan.

It ends somewhere in the 30s and there are large gaps and construction going on. AVOID!
  • I'm glad I work on the West Side... travel is a breeze
