power 105.1's "are you smarter than an asian?"
The hits don't stop... more racist radio news. Last week, around 9:00 am on Wednesday, the Ed Lover Show with Egypt and Ashy on Power 105.1 in New York aired a segment called "Are You Smarter Than An Asian?" Yeah. That title alone makes me scream that's racist! But it gets a lot worse. In the segment, an "Asian" guy named Mr. Hung Lo spoke broken English with a stereotypical Chinese accent, with "Kung Fu Fighting" music playing in the background. A listener then called in and competed with Mr. Lo to answer jacked up questions like "How does an Asian pronounce 'fried rice'?" That's racist! I first heard about this in this press release from the Organization of Chinese Americans:

OCA CONDEMNS POWER 105.1FM RADIO SEGMENT AS RACIST
April 14, 2007 - Today, the four New York City metropolitan area Organization of Chinese American Chapters - New York, New Jersey, Long Island and Westchester – condemned the recent segment aired on radio station 105.1FM, "Are You Smarter Than An Asian" as racist and is asking executives at 105.1FM for an on-air apology and a meeting with Asian American community leaders.
Close to 9am on Wednesday, April 11, the Ed Lover Show with Egypt and Ashy aired "Are You Smarter Than An Asian" where an "Asian" male named Mr. Hung Lo spoke with a stereotypical Chinese accent broken English, and Kung Fu fighting music in the background. A call-in listener then competed with "Mr. Lo" to answer extremely insulting questions, such as "How does an Asian pronounce 'fried rice?'"
In a letter to Power 105.1FM Programming Director, the OCA Chapters writes, "As a leading radio station in the most diverse city with the fasted growing immigrant population coming from Asian countries, your segment was...very ignorant of the community in which you service... it was a throw back to the era when Asian Americans were grossly stereotyped in American media...it is sad that your station chose to go backwards rather than move forwards."
Ms. Vicki Shu Smolin, President of OCA-New York: "It is disconcerting that immigrant and ethnic communities are the target of so-called 'humor' on the radio just to get ratings. As news spreads of this incident, the nearly 1 million Asian Pacific Americans living in New York City will not be listening to Power 105.1. Its executives, along with Ed Lover and his co-hosts must apologize on air."
Ms. Florence Chen, President, OCA-New Jersey: "Asian Americans are constantly having to prove ourselves as 'Americans.' OCA will not stand for this type of broadcasting. We were successful in getting NJ Radio Station 101.5FM to fire the Jersey Boys for hate media. Unless there is an on-air apology coupled with a community meeting, we will do all we can to ensure this will not happen again.
Ms. Jeannette Wang, President, OCA-Westchester: "This segment made a mockery of the many contributions of Asian Americans to the United States, right before the month of May, which is Asian American Heritage Month, when people all over the country celebrate the contributions of Asian Americans to United States' history, economics and culture.
Mr. John Tandana, OCA-Long Island: "The executives of Power 105.1FM are completely out of touch with its community. This type of stereotyping subjects Asian American children to racial taunting and hate crimes. We hope Don Imus' fall will serve as a catalyst for change and we all should learn from this bitter lesson. Degrading and mocking other people will only harm our civil society"

If someone out there has audio of this clip, sent it my way and I'll share it with everyone. This crap is racist and Power 105.1 needs to know it. Speak out, and tell them what you think—if this makes you angry, tell someone about it! Here's Power 105.1's contact information:
Power 105.1 FM
1120 6th Ave New York, NY 10036
Request Line: 800-585-1051

Some needs to answer for this. This kind of stuff has happened more times than I can count now, and nothing seems to change. The Asian American community continues to struggle for respect, while the rest of America conveniently writes us off as the punchline for a joke. Or a racist, idiotic radio gag. Don Imus makes an off-the-cuff racist, sexist remark, the entire nation goes into an uproar, and he gets fired. Rightly so. He should have to face those consequences. But radio stations across the country purposely build entire segments and jokes around Asian stereotypes all the time, and no one does a goddamn thing. Where is the justice? They need to know that we will not allow this any more. If this is going to happen, someone's ass is going down. That's racist!

Power 105.1 is a ghetto station. It's expected.
-
so basically you're saying its okay cause they are "ghetto". a obvious euphemism for something else.
-
no it's not okay.
-
Armchair,
I hear you and you are right.
But the dialogue surrounding Imus and all this other crap has got turn turn in to something else other that "fire them". Becuase these people will continue to say these things and millions listening will laugh at them and the question really is: Why?
Imus ,and anyone else who has been fired fired over something like this, will pick up and start all over again and do the same show elsewhere. New media outlets (web) and a more diverse body of listeners and diverse body of people in the ranks of the corporate sponsors ( many of the sponsoring companies now have women and people of color in their ranks unlike 15-20 years ago) and they wrote to their respective CEO's etc about their disapproval of Imus causing them to decide to pull their sponsorship. That was the nail in Imus MSNBC career - when the money / sponsorships left, he was left in the wind and fired. SO we know it is about money and what sells.
But to speak about solutions, protest, bans and firings will not prevent this type of thing nor do they alone help race relations. If Imus, or the clowns at 105.1 have anything in common, it is that they generally do not know any of the type of people ( personally) that they are making fun of daily. They do not interact with them, they are not friends with them and have no reason to be. In the case of Imus if you listen/ read the transcript, his producer McGuirk is the one feeding the stuff to Imus and Imus tries to be outrageous and keeps going, etc. A typical radio formula.
But more to the point, if Don Imus had women, blacks, whites, asians, working in the capacity of producer, director, camera and he was around those people everyday and interacted with them, would his humor be the same? Honestly, I dont know but I would guess that it would not be the same.
But Imus was surrounded by other white men like him who all thought the same jokes" were funny - and they appealed to other people who thought they were funny because those listeners were the same as him. Yes, he had a broad audience but it was mostly white, of course. This can be said of many audiences and there is nothing inherently wrong with that.
But until companies like MSNBC and CBS start hiring QUALIFIED people of color, asians, women and blacks in the ranks ( or any monolithic "culture") this will continue to happen. T It is about fairness which brings about diversity as a RESULT of fair policies and hiring practices. (The diversity of the sponsoring companies is what did Imus in).
105.1 probably has no Asian people working in that studio.
Therefore, those jokes are funny to them and their equally 'isolated' audience.
When I was in 2nd grade, I thought fart jokes were funny. Because at that point, my experiences included little more than that
.
But by 5th grade, when I started really getting interested in girls, those jokes just weren't as funny or appealing. My perspective had changed based on my experiences and the cute girls I was around. I'd like to think I grew up.
Maybe the humor in this country has to change and grow up a little (nothing should be "banned" though), and people will have to understand that maybe what we think is so funny, isn't really that funny after all when we are hurting and dehumanizing people. Maybe it will make our humor and comedy will get better, who knows.
If you read a Steve Colbert transcript without context, you would demand he be fired right away. But his humor is more complex than just the words he says - it is the "character" he plays when saying them.
Was Imus trying to be "Colbert-like" when he makes those comments? I dont know - but probably not.
In the end, I really don't know if Imus is a Racist ( he seems to play one on the radio). But a fair question to him would be:
Don, if you WERE a racist, how WOULD you make fun of black people on your show and what would you do differently as a racist when making fun of Venus Williams, Gwen Iffel and other black people for the last 20 years or so.
That is an answer I would love to hear.
But inst it funny today how no one regardless of what they say wants to be labeled a racist? Michael Richards is another person I would ask that some question.... -
its okay if you make fun of everyone equally. but if you pick out certain groups for targets of jokes. thats racist.

Everyone who posts on this board, everyone who protested Imus and Michael Richards, in fact everyone who has existed and will exist and co-exists with other cultures, is racist and/or bigoted in some way. And that's the fact Jack/s. -
knowing my fellow posters and american's they won't be as outrage by this as by the Imus comments. This is my prediction.

Kind of like James Byrd, Jr. and Ken Tillary.

Armchair: FYI
CBS Radio show pulled after Chinese call prank
BY: Actress Archives | Monday, May 14, 2007
A couple of DJs have been caught up in the wave of concern following the departure of Don Imus and have gotten pulled for a bit where they called a Chinese restaurant and made bad jokes about Asian stereotypes. The Dog House with JV and Elvis won't be heard on CBS Radio again and not just because the bit wasn't funny, but because of complaints from Asian-American groups about the offensiveness of the call. Jeff Vandergrift and Dan Lay will no longer be broadcast, CBS Radio spokeswoman Karen Mateo revealed this weekend.
The bit in question by "JV and Elvis" actually happened three weeks ago and Jeff Vandergrift and Dan Lay have been suspended since then. As the New York Times notes, the firing of the DJs shows just how much scrutiny has increased on DJs in the wake of the Don Imus incident. Imus was fired in April for making comments about the Rutger's basketball team. He is currently preparing a $120 million breach of contract lawsuit under the claim that his contract called for "one strike," a warning about behavior from CBS Radio before he could be fired.
Jeanette Wang, an executive with the Organization of Chinese Americans, spoke to the Times about the recent firing, saying, "This is a victory not only for the Asian-American community, but for all communities who find themselves constant targets of racist and sexist programming."
The JV and Elvis show aired on CBS Radio in New York right after another pair of troubled shock jocks, Opie and Anthony, who will return to the station this morning after apologizing for a bit where they laughed as a homeless man fantasized about raping Condoleeza Rice and Laura Bush. Once again, Al Sharpton has come out and said that Gregg Hughes and Anthony Cumina, the real names of Opie and Anthony, should be fired. We'll see what happens there but Opie and Anthony have an XM show, making sponsor pressure much harder.
On April 5th, JV and Elvis made a call to an Asian restaurant and used as many stereotypes as possible. They asked for "shrimp flied lice", claimed he was a student of kung fu, and compared menu items to body parts. At first, no one laughed and no one cared. What happened was that, in the wake of the Don Imus firing, people were looking for other shock jock bits to air and the bit got replayed. That's when the Asian-American groups noticed. More than 100 people showed up recently for a support of JV and Elvis rally. It was too little too late and the pair were fired.
-------------------------
Interestingly, Opie and Anthony on Satellite will probably not be fired for their "joke" with their homeless guest about raping secretary of state Condoleesa Rice....

Let the chips fall where they may, but where is Al Sharpton on this one?
Jessie? The NAACP? They didn't tell the joke but were laughing along...and it is their show.
I know O&A are crass and it is a paid station, etc. But if the issue is content and being fair, wouldn't this be considered an offense against a BLACK WOMAN/ Women too? Why the double and Triple Standard? If they told this same joke about Hillary ( maybe they have, I don't know) Is she fair game because she is a public figure or politician?
Seriously, if O&A ran this joke about Obama's wife, Oprah, Halle Barry or even Nancy Pellosi , I wonder what would happen? -
Who's protesting against O&A? Remember, Imus wasn't fired because he broke the law he was fired because of protests and threats of boycott. Plus! Condi being a right winger and pro-Bush (obviously) supporter, puts her below the official Reverend Al Support Fund. Although I did hear that XM and Sirius are worried about how this will affect their merger plans. It's all about who your friends are.

All true and I am not even saying they should be fired. Its just seems like what they said was more vicious ( it also included raping the first lay, Laura Bush) so I am just surprised at the lack of "outrage" and protest considering the topic and the subject. Plus, it just wasn't funny either.
Trojan Condoms pulled their ads from the show.

People have a right to say what they want of course. Its just that they do not have a right to expect no one to react to it or for there to be repercussions from it...that is the other side of the "free speech" issue that no one seems to understand...If the advertisers walk that is another issue. Not sure how revenue is generated completely on satellite Radio though.
But it is crazy that you can say anything you want about a republican or conservative or even a Christian person these days - even if they are a woman...but Muslims, Democrats and Black people are always off limits no matter what they do or say or it will become "controversial". Just looking and hoping for balance...or we will never get anywhere...and maybe that is the point for some people.
I guess the silence on the issue in light of and coupled with the overreaction over the Imus issue is what bothers me the most - in such short amount of time too... Imus was also caught in a slow news cycle week (pre Va. Tech. too).
Someone is saying something about Sharpton's deafening silence:

Rev. Peterson Blasts Sharpton for Silence Over Opie and Anthony's Vulgar Attacks on Condi Rice -
oh wel:
XM Radio Suspends Opie & Anthony
WASHINGTON and NEW YORK, May 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- XM Radio announced today that the company has suspended Gregg "Opie" Hughes and Anthony Cumia, hosts of "The Opie & Anthony Show" and ceased broadcast of the show for 30 days, effective immediately.
XM Radio deplored the comments aired on "The Opie & Anthony Show" last week. At the time, the company strongly expressed its views to Opie and Anthony, and they issued an immediate apology.
Comments made by Opie and Anthony on yesterday's broadcast put into question whether they appreciate the seriousness of the matter. The management of XM Radio decided to suspend Opie and Anthony to make clear that our on-air talent must take seriously the responsibility that creative freedom requires of them.
As a company, XM provides customers with tools to control what they listen to on XM. "The Opie & Anthony Show" appears on one of XM's explicit language channels (XL). Whenever a radio is tuned to an explicit language channel, the letters "XL" continuously appear on the screen. XM frequently mentions on its explicit language channels that the content may be inappropriate for certain listeners and tells how to "block" channels that feature this type of content. Channel blocking is available through xmradio.com or by calling -
I guess XM isn't waiting for the protests. I wonder if Gee Double Ya sent the big wigs a newspaper wrapped mackerel.
