oh yes i'm taking advantage of the message boards. could anyone recommend a good place to get plants in the ProHo/Park Slope area (i live on prospect pl, btwn carlton and vanderbilt so sompleace near that would be better).
also any suggestions on plants that i should get? i've never really kept plants before and i'd like to not kill them.

We've gotten some at the botanic gardens, but I'm SURE that's not the cheapest. Be careful to get stuff that doesn't require much light, unless you have a lot of windows.
Also be careful not to overwater, and don't get yellow pots. We got some weird fly infestations that way. (Not to scare you! Plants are great, you just have to be careful.) -
go to the farmer's market at grand army on saturday morning- lots of plants, lots of people selling them that can help you out...

Had a lot of problems with spider mite infestations with any and every house plant from the farmer's market. not to dissuade you, but just make sure you separate the newbies from your regular plants for a while and maybe give them a spray-down, lest you spread the mites. -
there's that garden store on the triangle at atlantic near BAM.
-
Shannon's on Ft. Hamilton Pkwy (On the other side of Greenwood cemetery). Great selection and good pricing.
Also, Susan on St. Marks bet. Wash. and Underhill (I believe it's 328 St. marks) is having a sale. She is a promotional planner and she and her husband have that storefront on Vanderbilt bet. Park and Prospect across from MET -
Try ZuZu's petals on 5th Avenue.

I highly recommend these guys as well. Very high quality stuff at reasonable prices and they are a neighborhood fixture. Well, at least until BAM kicks them out. -
The Botanic Garden is fantastic for plants -- and there's always someone around there that can tell you about them, and if they can survive your conditions. They always have a few cool cacti for the negligent...and orchids and bonsai and really high quality everything. 10% discount if you're a member.
Their prices are reasonable, and the plants are healthy. I've occasionally had the health/buggy problem with greenmarket plants, as much as I want to support the farmers . . .
And at BBG, your $ goes to that great garden -
This is what will replace the triangular lot by BAM http://www.archphoto.it/IMAGES/ten/ten.htm

Did'nt that place burn down? Is it open again? -

it was on 7th, it burned down, then reopened just off of 7th... i think that it's on lincoln?! maybe?! -
There are two Zuzu's now. The bigger one on 5th Avenue (I'm afraid I don't know the cross street) sells plants and home stuff as well as flowers, and the smaller one, on Berkeley just below 7th Avenue, concentrates on flowers.

Subject: tanks!
thank you everybody for all the suggestions. i'm pretty excited, but i just didn't want to bring bugs in the house and i know that shouldn't be a problem with reputable shops. my apartment has just been stifling (read the post about me not having window screens...) and i thought some plants might liven the place up. i'll def. check these places out. -
Zuzu's is definitely overpriced.
Check out Home Depot or Lowes. They have TONS of different plants/flowers and they are reasonably priced! -

This actually looks like it would be a good tradeoff. -
That's funny because it looks a lot like the models of the arena that everybody is bitching about. Maybe because it's a library you like it? Or am I the only one to see the likeness?
-
I was actually talking about the benefits of having another library, not the architectural merits of the building that will house it.

Alex,
Your eyes are not sharp.
You cannot confuse Scary Gehry with Ten Arquitectos.

I'm getting a distinctly "Anonymous Guest" vibe from this anonymous guest.

Why do you care? And why so defensive?
Seems like carnival has a boner to pick with me -

This Alex/guest has posted on several other threads, always goes by stupid but brief posts.

Not the same person. One's an annoying asshole known as Anon-G who thinks he's being a smartass by using the lamest IP obscuring program known to man, the other, Alex is a fine upstanding individual, whom you may disagree with but probably doesn't deserve trashing in the threads.
I see IP addresses. Sorta like "I see dead people", except not as cool. -
Subject: The Triangle and other plants...
The Nursery at the Triangle has great plants and it is a shame that they are going to be shut down. Nice stuff and a nice staff! I can think of other places for that Library annex. Home depot plants die. GAP plants have bugs.. The Brooklyn Hieghts Greenmarket as well as the one at Union Square have great plants. I get some of my outdoor plants at those places. For your basic cheap thrill house plants I have a few that I have bought at the Met on Vanderbilt. They do great!
A few thoughts... Now I cringe waiting for the comments.... -

I have to give you guys credit with policing this crap, these guest people annoy the crap out of me. I am going to have to give myself a 24hr DH timeout. -
Roux42, what's a GAP plant?
I'm imagining a store next to a Baby Gap
eek! -
uh ... never mind.

I kind of like how AG writes in stanzas. His(?) avoidance of common prose is refreshing, in my opinion.
