Black Teens Call Latino 'Cracker' is anyone surprised? — Brooklynian

Black Teens Call Latino 'Cracker' is anyone surprised?

Subject: Black Teens Call Latino 'Cracker' is anyone surprised?

hmmm, maybe this question should be asked to the black teenagers who called my friend a cracker for just being a white guy while he stood inline at the bodega yesterday?

Oh and you can't say anything to them or else they may come back with family members and beat you down ala mohammed.

MOD NOTE: This topic was split off from another thread. Some posts discussing the relevance of this to the other thread were deleted. Because of this, it may appear that Oiseau is responding to himself, but he originally was not.

  • It's relevant. It shows that black teenagers think white people are crackers. It all starts at home.

It does not show that. It shows that the teenagers who called your friend that thought so.
  • Does it matter if he was a latino?

It's not the fact that they were wrong in assuming he was a cracker or not, it was the fact that they probably think this way to all white people they come in contact with.

Sorry, but a white guy being called a cracker by a bunch of black teenagers is the same as a black guy being called a nigger by a bunch of white teenagers IMO.
  • I'm so confused. it seems like oiseau is arguing both sides against the middle.
  • I'm just saying it all starts at home and this ain't ever going to go away.

White folk experience racism everyday towards them. Everyone is prejudice. Racism is a two way street.
  • A black guy calling a latino "cracker"? That's messed up!
    The correct terminology is BEANER!
The educational system has failed us.
  • Too bad they can't be fired like Imus. And yes...he was an idiot to make the remarks he did.
I agree that there is an imbalance in what can and can't be said depending on race. And the debasing negatives are always wrong no matter who says them.
Personally, I also agree that it starts at home.
These are probably the parents that don't go to back to school night or allow their kids to wander the streets in the wee hours of the morning on a school night. But will be the first to complain if their child is taken into custody during a brawl or incident because they'd complain they were targeted because they were black. Even if videos and pictures clearly show them in the middle of the act.
So often when you hear a tragedy of a child of single digit age being the victim of a stray bullet, you find that child was on the stoop at 2AM. Where were the parents then and why would a child be there at that time??? No matter how hot it might be you would still not let a child out to wander in the middle of the night.
And let me ask you....what exactly is a cracker?? Other than a racial slur to a white person. Can't be assumed to be southerner when you're standing in a bodega in Brooklyn. Thats what I always thought it referred to.

WOW. not sure what this has to do with the topic at hand, but no matter how late a child is out, no matter how inappropriately, it is not okay to suggest that someone other than the shooter is responsible for their getting SHOT.

  • You're absolutely right and I didn't at all mean to imply that.
    Mea Culpa
What I was saying that it's the parents responsibility when they decide to have a child to also take on the care that doesn't only include food and shelter.
It's teaching them to understand others and to have an open mind and to be there on all levels to support them.
That would include spiritual (and I don't at all necessarily mean as in a main stream religion) educational as in meeting with teachers, checking their homework and supporting them by being as active as possible in their school and after school lives.
I would never,EVER mean it to say a child is at fault for what they're parents are lacking in as responsible adults and, of course, in a case of a child being hurt by someone else, it would be that person's fault.
But parenting is a huge and life time responsiblity and it has to be taken seriously or you do end up with kids who spit out the junk they see on TV and from other mediums that aren't real (like violent video games) and no one takes responsiblity for the unfortunate outcome that we as a society have to live with.
  • it was only until I moved out of miami did I get called white. before then people assumed I was jewish or cuban. becoming a 'white person' at the ripe old age of 18 felt really bizarre, let me tell you. yes - I used to make fun of white people. HAH.
  • White folk experience racism everyday towards them.
That's certainly true. But what has made white people's racism more harmful than anyone else's in this country is the fact that it has been coupled with wealth and power.

If some loser doesn't like you because of your race... whatever. But if that same loser will be making the decision on your next promotion, or mortgage application, or legal proceeding, it's a big issue.

Not all racism is equal. And what white people have experienced in this country is, on the whole, minor. As wealth and power (hopefully) become more evenly distributed, racism will perhaps become a significant issue for white people. But I don't think we're there yet.
  • Well, what does white really mean? I'm a mutt. I have so many nationalities in me. One of them is Native American. Talk about racism, prejudice, and injustice.
Just think of the Trail of Tears.
I also have a last name that sounds Jewish (it's really German). It's interesting for me to observe the assumptions people make when they hear our name from both the Jews, Gentiles and anyone else who feels the need to make a snap judgement (like when I'm negotiating over a price of something). I actually lost a job when I first got married when the boss asked me what Temple we attended and I told her the truth. She was thunderstruck. It was a wholly Jewish office and that just turned her whole attitude towards me. Before then all was well, after then I was treated like a leper.
What I'm saying is...who is really wholly anything anymore?
Speculation is that within 100 years we will all be such a mix of races that it will be a moot point.
I think that would be a great thing.
Take the skin off and we're all the same underneath.
  • hmm...maybe it could be said that what has made black people's racism more harmful than anyone else's in this country is the fact that it has been coupled with envy and power.

If some loser doesn't like you because of your race... whatever. But if that same loser will be making the decision on whether to beat the shit out of you or mug you, it's a big issue.

Sorry, but my dad was beaten to within an inch on his life back in the late seventies/early eighties because he was white and just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

They didn't want just his money, he had given them that, they wantedto beat whitey.

Not all racism is equal, but just because you (and possibly your family for generations) have been discriminated against doesn't give you the right to give that racism back in whatever form. The cycle must be stopped somewhere.

    OK, I have to ask.
What part of the country do you live in?

The last time I heard one of those awful stories, the little girl was in her bed and the bullet came through the window. But then we'd both be talking anecdotes and bullsh*t generalities.

YES! I had the same problem! I grew up in a predominantly mexican community. It wasn't till I moved to go to college that it was assumed I was white. You know Mexican's come in all types!
  • Nobody ever spots me as Latina. Ever. I love when people speak in Spanish in front of me assuming that I won't understand. Makes for some fun.

I'm on the white end of the Cuban rainbow
  • Hey I'm 100% American and that's what I tell anyone who asks. I am adopted and I have no interest in finding out who my birth parents were.

I thought you were Canadian, no? If so, although what you say is technically true, it's also kind of misleading.

True, but calling someone by a racial epithet will get you into less trouble these days than taking the skin off them.
  • I certainly hope so, still should be positive with people.
  • I've often wondered if there was some green dye they could put in the water that would change the color of everyone's skin. Or a benign plasmid/virus that infected every cell with Green Fluorescent Protein. We have the technology to abolish segregation by skin color. That might be a fast track to racial harmony. Then again, no matter what you do, some people will still find something to set themselves apart from the rest and justify exclusivity and stratification.

I don't think there is a constructive response to this.
