Rented any good DVDs lately?

I got a few for ya from Asia. Have you guys seen any Won Kar-Wai stuff? A good one to really sink your teeth into is In the Mood For Love. Simply gorgeous and sad all around. That's from Hong Kong. Also, try Afterlife and Nobody Knows. Nobody Knows is ure to bring some tears to your eyes. Crushing, but the child acting is unbelievable. The main actor, a 12 year old won something at Cannes for his acting.

It's also fun to go down the old Jarmusch road as well. Stranger Than Paradise and Down by Law are fine, fine films.

Just watched The Royal Tanenbaums recently and it get smore peculiar and btter with each viewing.

And for a drinkin' flick, Factotum is great, as well as Barfly if you haven't seen that as well.

Fun, fun to write about movies!

I forgot to mention Smiles of a Summer Night (Swedish). A Little Night Music is based on it, and I rented it after seeing the musical. It's so good I think I need to buy it.

So, I rented Antonia's Line, only to realize I saw it already. Phooey! It was good, though.

I haven't seen "Elizabethtown" or "Match Point", so I'll be sure to cross them off the list.

But I will add "Smiles of a Summer Night"

I also recently saw Sunset Boulevard -- terrific, which reminds me of a few other classics:
• The Treasure of Sierra Madre with Bogart
• Bergman's The Virgin Spring -- heavy
• Hitchcock's Notorious -- yummy Ingrid
and even though you've got to watch it twice to get it
• The Big Sleep is incredible

and good clean fun
• Charade -- romantic comedy that cannot be beat..."you ain't no Cary Grant / but then again who is"
• Night on Earth weepingly funny

and while most of the ladies in my life don't like samurai, Ran and the Seven Samurai are astounding

BYW. it's not a documentary....and the girl from Maria Full of Grace is in it. She is a great actress!

I saw "Elizabethtown and didn't think it was so horrible, perhaps because it reminded me about stuff that happened when my father died (cremation, memorial service, putting things into perspective, etc.). Not fabulous, but not a total waste of 2 hours either.

It was discussed in another thread, but bears repeating - The Fountain, also starring Hugh Jackman, is great recent release that's also a little off the beaten path.

Loved The Fountain; it was the one film I saw in a cinema last year. For this kind of film, it's almost a shame to do it on DVD.

All Kar Wai Wong movies! In the Mood for Love is a great movie so is it's sequel 2046. Sooooo goood.

Why-Fi, have you seen any Koreeda movies? Afterlife or Nobody Knows? Face is a pretty good one, too. Really weird and kind of sad, but lovely.

Also, any Won Kar-Wai is awesome. You're totally right. I can't wait to see the Nora Jones flick he just finished (hopefully) and was shot in the US. I think that'll be really interesting!

Isn't Wong Kar Wai Chinese? I thought WhyFi wanted Japanese films...

It almost goes without saying that any Akira Kurosawa movie is worth checking out. Another famous Japanese director is Masaki Kobayashi. I liked The Inheritence and Hara Kiri.

I also recommend any film directed by Juzo Itami. Start with Tampopo, especially for the foodies out there. The Funeral is another great one. All of his "Taxing Woman" movies are good. And The Gentle Art of Japanese Extortion is also worth seeing.

I'll see if I can think of some more...
