Excellent writing and directing... I need to buy it because I already want to see it a fourth time.
I liked it a lot (not as much as Shaun of the Dead), but I was really tired at the time and it seemed like it just wouldn't end...

Best movie I've seen in the last month or so - The Station Agent. Great performances, the characters are funny in their realism, and it's not burdened with the heavy-handedness necessary for a Hollywood ending.
  • Station Agent was very good.

Just saw the first disc of season 2 of "Weeds"..very good...Waiting for disc 2 to arrive.

Saw "Zodiac" over the weekend. Not bad

Went to see "Sicko" ...typical Michael Moore ....he has some good points, but is prone to overexaggerating both sides to support his agenda.

Hot Fuzz is on my list......I love that it sounds like a porno ;-)
  • Just watched "The Host." A Korean monster film that is just rather fresh and original, funny at times, while sometimes scary. Also, just saw Nobody Knows (Dare no Shiranai) again and almost balled. Such a tough one to watch, but really gorgeous.

I have The Fountain and Hot Fuzz coming. I'm also about to check out the original Nightmare on Elm Street again.
  • Shish - thanks for recommending "Man Bites Dog". It was good...a bit rough, but good
  • Another Shish recommendation down. I saw "Water" this weekend. I liked it. Very sad, but good.
  • 2 great, recently viewed flicks -

Cashback - An art student (Sean Biggerstaff, quidditch captain Oliver Wood, for your HP fans) goes through a traumatic break-up and is struck with insomnia. He decides to pass his time (in very interesting ways!) working the overnight at a local supermarket. Enter new romantic interest, etc.

Trust the Man - Great cast: David Duchovny, Julianne Moore, Billy Crudup, Maggie Gyllenhaal. Two couples. Comical (because they're so true) relationship troubles.
  • Cave of the yellow dog - you might find this slow, but I liked it. Fascinating to see economy of means employed in the ingenious design of objects and homes of people living as nomadic cattle herders in mongolia.

The Best of Youth - a series from Italian TV. Loved it. Just great.
  • The Lookout - A young man, struggling with several aspects of his life after a severe head injury, is befriended by bank robbers.

Definitely worth a watch. Elements of Momento, but less "clever," and more about the human aspect.
  • Just watched "God Grew Tired of Us" about Sudanese "Lost Boys" who were sent to live in America....Very good. Sad, but there were some funny parts as well.
  • Watched "Green Street Hooligans" (or just "Hooligans" elsewhere in the world) the other day, and thought it was pretty good. It's about an American kid that falls in with a group English football (soccer) hooligans. I still don't buy Elijah Wood as a tough kid, but I have a feeling that we'll see a lot more of Charlie Hunnam, the actor that plays the top boy hooligan (I guess that he was in Cold Mountain, just after Hooligans). It's definitely worth a watch, 'specially on one of those days when you just one to beat the shit out of someone.
  • Rushmore.
    modern classic.
  • Just saw "Away from Her". Liked it very much
  • As far as Asian films go, (I love Shanghai films, especially!) my all-time favorite film is Farewell My Concubine. My life was never the same after seeing this film.

    Rent it. Oh yes!
  • I finally watched "Half Nelson". Damn good.

Any other good Ryan Gosling movies that I should watch?
  • One of the first films I rented from Netflix was Everything Is Illuminated. That was really good.

Uh, I think that that's the only good one out there...
  • Saw "Raise the Red Lantern" this weekend. Very good
  • Ooohhh!!!! I jealous!!!

I'm in the middle of Godfather III. Let y'all know how it turns out. :P
  • A good thread.

Thumbs up to lots of flicks already mentioned (Maria Full of Grace, Rabbit Proof Fence, Whale Rider, Ma Vie en Rose, and more I'm sure).

Just looked over my netflix history and thought I'd add a few favorites from that.

    Mission Hill (cartoon series, hilarious)
Freaks and Geeks (early 2000s show--several cast members of this are also in Knocked Up)
    Volver
Science of Sleep (Gael Garcia Bernal is in so many awesome movies)
    Red Violin
    Primer (weird)
  • I knew Judd Apatow (Freaks and Geeks, 40 YO Virgin, Knocked Up) in high school. Really happy to see him doing so well and love his work.
  • thumbs up:

    "Lives of Others"
    "The Host"
"Wolfen" (wow. has anyone else seen it?)

    Thumbs down:

    Planet Terrible...er, Terror
  • "lives of others" = thumbs up.

    haven't seen the other 2

BIG thumbs down for "The Good German"....great cast, shit movie
  • Terror Peak is also a really lousy one. Lynda Carter can't act AT ALL. She really sounds like the Superfriends Wonder Woman and delivers her lines in the same wooden way. "Look! The volcano is exploding!" Geesh!

Godfather III was pretty good. I liked the theme of Michael Corleone trying to redeem himself from a life of crime but not succeeding.
  • I love american gangster. I can't say i rented it ;). but it was on dvd.
slight spoilers below just highlight and see txt.

I wish they made a happier ending though. some how stash all his dough away and po po didn't get all his loot. but thats not what happen in rl :(.

He has a small role in the movie Remember the Titans which was a good movie.

I just saw the movie Kinky Boots and it was a funny feel-good movie.

    Borderline genre masterpiece.

He was also in "Fracture" with Anthony Hopkins. Not great, but good enough to waste 2 hours on.
  • He is supposedly really good in the now out Lars and the Real Girl but I haven't seen it myself.
  • Wow! Just re-watched "Fantastic Planet"/"La Planete sauvage" So weird, creepy and beautiful. Killer soundtrack! I swear I hadn't seen it since it was on Nightflight when I was a kid. Maybe in 1983? 84? Anyone remember Night Flight when it was on USA back in the day?
