Customer Service: The Good, Bad, and Bizarre
Local businesses on 7th Ave that have provided me with good customer service include Eyes on the Slope, Back to the Land, Video Forum (the staff can recommend good films AND music), and Brooklyn Valet (though I do not recommend over-priced, hazardous dry cleaning operations that charge women more than men). Close to 7th Avenue, on Flatbush Avenue near the Q subway station, Natural Land’s staff is nice and helpful too.
I’ve encountered rude and incompetent staff at Rite Aid and Chase Bank on 7th Avenue.
I’ve had weird experiences at the laundry matt near Tea Lounge on Union Street (and Tea Lounge itself, where laid-back staff can forget the mushrooming line of tea drinkers). The man in the laundry matt’s office always seems angry and the female workers in the main room folding laundry look fed-up. It’s probably not fun working in a laundry matt six days a week, but I wish I did not have the sensation that everyone hates my guts there. For all I know, I might have unintentionally offended them.

i second the good service at Eyes on the Slope, and the v. bad service at Rite Aid.
if you're in South Slope/Windsor Terrace, the absolute best newsstand/candy store/sundry items is Krupa Grocery, locally known as "Love's". lovely service from the Oak Park Pharmacy, too. -
Love's is the best (been there twice today already).
Oak Park - pharmacy guys (Mohammed and crew) are great, but ladies in teh front, not so friendly.
More great service places - Urban Optical (Dr. Adam and crew), who are very patient when I need to try on 500 frames to find one that I like
Slope Cellars - this wino loves SC :-) -
I second that about Rite Aid. WRETCHED service!

The worst service in the Northern Hemisphere has to be at the Rite Aid at 5th Street and 7th Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11215.
The store should be a case study at Harvard Business School ... or at Bellevue. Take your pick. -
Oh, I think the 7th Ave Rite Aid is even worse than the 5th Ave. At least you can walk down the aisles on 5th Ave. without tripping over something
That said, Hair Concern has great service - re-do your hair w/in a week and free bang trimming. Smart ideas! -
I agree - if there is worst service, management, store conditions, etc than Rite Aid anywhere in the Northern or Western Hemisphere I would love to see it.
Re Urban Optical - other than prices that are through the roof and Dr Adam often acting like he's on speed, yes it has good service.
Also great service is at Four Paws & A Tail - the guys that run this pet food and supply store are wonderful.
Believe it or not, even though we rarely go there anymore because of Fairway, the folks at Key Food on 7th are very good.
The dry cleaner on 4th just east of 7th Ave is great. -

Hey thats my spot! In fact I am gonna be walking my way up there in about a half hour.....The weather is beautiful for walking!

I'm always at that Rite Aid , and its not so bad.The lines are usually long , but
they have like three people working the registers , so it moves quickly.Only thing about it that I don't like is its size....its small and hard to get around on a busy day...and someone is always stocking something in an isle or two. -
My only comment.. I hate cvs even worse!! Long lines, bored help.. the wqorst. So how is it I live in PS and within less than a block's walk there are four pharmacies and they all suck!! LOl!

My biggest problem with the 7th Ave Rite Aid when I shopped there was that half the time the thing I needed was out of stock. Granted, I could find *some* toothbrush if I needed it, but the case was often a mess with very little choice, and when you need a small, soft-bristle brush, that's not good enough. Finally I started checking the case even when I didn't need a new toothbrush, so that if they'd actually stocked it I could pick up a few and keep them on hand.

It's the pharmacy at Rite Aid that really gets to me. There are a couple of folks working behind the counter now who are deliberately obtuse and unhelpful - I can see their co-workers getting exasperated with them in some cases, in other cases going beyond exasperation and letting them twist in the customer's annoyance. It wouldn't be so bad if these were merely incompetent employees - but they are quite purposeful about their refusal to do the basic thing: get your prescription from the place where it is hanging.

I find ALL the corporate pharmacies that are taking over to have BAD SERVICE and POORLY STOCKED shelves. Drives me nuts. You pay a few bucks more at Neergaards on 5th Ave & 9th St, but its local, open 24 hrs and well stocked.
Other Faves:
- Wine - Big Nose, Full Body on 7th Ave. Great recommendations that will never steer you wrong.
- Pizza - Smiling Pizza on 7th Ave & 9th St. - Good 'za and classic atmoshpere.
- Coffee - Cafe Regular on 11th St below 5th Ave. What up, Martin?
- Hardware - Leopoldi's on 5th ave. - they gots everything and the know how - you just need their help to find it.
- Save On Fifth - They also gots everything - lightbulbs, tshirts, detergentn, t-p, last minute coolers, some house wares -- everything. -
Agree about that Rite Aid. I hate that place like poison.

The Eckerd is pretty bad too. I bought something that rang up at a higher price than was marked on the thing itself. Unfortunately, I noticed after I'd already paid for it (but while I was still standing at the cash register). In order to get a refund of the extra money I'd been charged, I had to complete the process for a "return" by filing out a form that demanded my name, address, phone number, etc. And, there seemed to be no possible way for the cashier to charge me the correct price for the item I wanted, so I was unable to buy it after all that. It was total corporate inefficiency.
I've gotten really helpful service at Neda on 7th Ave. and Serene Rose on 5th Ave. The pet shop on 7th Ave between 15th and 16th is wonderful; the owner is incredibly helpful.
I've had good service at Tarzian. But the people who work in the Tarzian housewares store across the street can be really rude and horrible. -
SIP has absolutely, completely outstanding customer service. Every time I have asked them for a recommendation they have always been spot on and so gracious.
I went to the Bicycle Station this weekend and was completely in awe of how awesome the people were there as well. The line was long but the woman working the counter made an effort to let everyone know she would give them ample attention. Someone came in with a flat tire (having no idea you have to put air in them!) and they were very nice and not at all condescending. Never going to R&A again. -
Ditto on the pet shop! It's tiny but it's very good.

I am loathe to start another Key Food-bashing discussion, but I can't help but wonder what planet your Key Food is on.... the 7th Ave Key Food is notorious for service that makes Rite-Aid look like a dream. Surly, silent, or sullen: those are your choices of checkers. The store is a dump, usually smells of chemicals or rat poison, and the lines are enormous due to the reliably glacial checkout.
Believe it or not, even though we rarely go there anymore because of Fairway, the folks at Key Food on 7th are very good.
4 and a Tail is great... nice guys. Although I would note that they were slow to take the recalled food off their shelves. -
i agree about tire aid: nasty, incompetent, and i have had arguments with both managers and pharmacists (who treated me as though i were five. i am 41, why not accept the fact that i know how the drug works and i've been taking it forever and it's on your computer, without deciding to call my doctor first to check it out...) no thanks, i'll hit health aid, best customer service around.
PO on 9th has nasty as hell people working there, esp. behind the place where you get packages. -
rite aid is the worst. I got to the pharmacy at 9:40 pm only to see it shut. I asked one of the store workers , who said it closes at 9:30 while she was standing in front of a sign that said open until 10pm. Bad cover up job. secondly one of the pharmacists is downright rude and tried to pick a fight with me because their records showed a different birth date. when I called my ins carrier, they said the store made the mistake. I could go on.
Good -Sip -best wine store in the slope, helpful, knowledgeable and not the least bit snobbish. -
Gonna put in a Kudo for SLOPE DRUGS On 5th ave and 7th street. They are closed on sunday and do not stay open till midnite but their service if you have scrips with them is extraordinary and no long waits like Neergards or other places.. Ask for AJ... nad say you were recommended by Veets... He will know what the connection is.
Howdy, Stranger!
