GUN PULLED AND FIRED ON ME ON THURSDAY

edited November -1 in Prospect Heights
I know i am bit late posting this, but late night on Thursday night ( night of the heavy rain) around 1:30 in the morning i was walking from Prospect Place down to Vanderbuilt. Well i was approached (40 yards away) by a young man wearing a red hat, red shirt... he mumbled something i couldnt hear that well, and out of the blue he pulls a gun out and starts shooting i would say about 3 shots with a small calibre gun...i basicly ran to soda, and spead the word.. so i figured i would do the same here..

a bit of a noob... been in PH since MARCH...

  • Subject: yikes.

Scary. I do hope you called the cops and filed a report.
  • Whoa.

Just to clarify, he shot at you?
  • Yo that's ill. I hope you called the cops. Glad you're okay.

Small clarification if you could be so kind: were you walking East-by-Southeast on Prospect from Carlton to Vanderbilt, or West-by-Northwest on Prospect from Underhill to Vanderbilt, or on Vanderbilt walking North-by-Northeast from Prospect towards Soda when this happened?
  • i'm sorry this happened, pb. very, very scary.

i'm not very familiar w. the nabe, but seems there needs to be much more police presence from what i gather from other posters here. something's got to be done.
  • Holy crap! That's completely terrifying. I'm glad you're okay!

There's a thread going on in the Crown Heights forum right now about some shootings that have been happening lately a little further east that you should check out, especially Neene's suggestions for things people in the area can do about their concerns:

    http://www.brooklynian.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=5195

I do hope you made a police report, but in addition to that, please do call Detectives Raton or McClean and Councilwoman James (contact info in that thread linked above) regardless of whether there was a police report filed and let them know about this.
  • Anybody hear this? I've woken up to gunshots before, but nothing on Thursday.
  • Are all of these shootings confirmed?

I am like totally sketched out.
  • Is there any confirmation at all on this? Forgive me for being suspicious of this post, and if it happened I'll eat crow, but there are a few things that make me suspicious.

    1) Dude's named after a guy in interpol
    2) On a rainy night after dark it seems a bit odd that the poster could see that the shooter was wearing all red - especially since he was 40 yards away.
    3) That he heard him mumbling... in the rain... at 40 yards.
    4) That the guy ids it as a small caliber gun.
    5) Guy’s a first time poster

Now granted - if I'd just been shot at my narrative skills would be shot, (and, come to think of it, I'm a noob too) but still, this strikes me as trolling.

Anyone hang out at soda can get confirmation that some guy ran in having been shot at?

This is why I wanted clarification, too - not the same reasons, but some of the inconsistency... or to find out if he was truly the intended target, if this all did happen.
  • PLUS: He uses the British spelling of "calibre" and yet says the distance in yards, not meters!

Seriously, though, the above are all good points. I hate to be too harsh in case this incident did happen, but it seems we recently had a "discussion" about crime and "fearmongering" around here...coincidence?
  • And while the "crazy person on the street" factor is never to be 100% discounted, most shootings are either by people one knows or in a robbery situation.

Someone deciding to put their red hat on, wander out in the rain and start shooting randomly at strangers doesn't seem to click.

(I always shoot at strangers on mild, breezy evenings myself  )
  • Subject: DeeDee

This posting is too incredible to be real. Definitely a hoax!
  • Maybe it's all an attempt to lower the real estate prices so some can buy it up cheaply.... Still not sure of the accurate number of shootings in CH and PH over the last 4 opr 5 days...
  • Subject: or maybe...

Hey, maybe this is that acquaintance of mine who likes to post fake ads on CL for fun, just to read the responses (not that I in any way condone his actions, mind you)?
  • i was at soda that night til about 2:30am and never heard a word of this... so...
  • and he spelled basically as BASICLY, the fiend!!

As far as I know, the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland still use yards and miles in general for distances, so Paulbanks' calibre/yards could well be British or Irish. He could also have immigrated to the US from a Commonwealth country after learning to spell but before the widespread adoption of metric in the 70s and 80s. Or he could be a calibre/metre kind of guy like me that is making a genuine effort to fit in with the locals, but doesn't always get it 100%.

Canada prefers 'calibre', but these days most distances in common use are metric. Yards are long since gone from other countries that once used British Imperial Units, e.g. Jamaica, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, India, Pakistan, Singapore etc. who all use 'calibre'. Liberia still uses yards I believe, but they spell it 'caliber' like the US, so we can safely rule that out.

Now that is taking it to the next level! Thanks, man. Very informative. We are going all Encyclopedia Brown on this situation!
  • I can't wait for the blog "spell and grammar check" for specific regions of the world... If only the author of this posting knew how to write in Prospect Heights English, s/he may have been convincing.

Not so far fetched. I'm sure the FBI has computer analysis tools for spelling and grammar to narrow right down where and when you came from; it's only a matter of time before someone GPLs a tool for anyone to use, if they haven't already. The last OS I installed came with spelling-and-grammar checkers for half a dozen different kinds of English. I deliberately disguise what I know to be different from American when writing for Americans, but I'm sure an expert could pick me out -- certain prepositions are a dead giveaway. And if you know some of the differences, it becomes a game to spot the foreigner, like guessing where people's accents come from.

In the absence of any fresh evidence or eyewitness testimony regarding the purported shots fired, let the forensic detective work continue.
  • Well, let's see - "noob" indicates familiarity with the lexicon of online games, and the more commonly used "n00b" may have been eschewed in this case in order to avoid confusing the audience - odd to split the difference, however. Why not just say, "I'm new around here..."?

I reckon we're looking at a World of Warcraft junkie from the British Isles with an extensive knowledge of firearms.
  • Paul Banks is the lead singer of Interpol... If it's him.. Look here and search for his name

    why not an evercrack junkie?

Just playing the odds. But Asheron's Call is definitely out.
  • Right on the money by the look of it:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Banks

Paul Julian Banks (born May 3, 1978 in Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, England) is the lead singer, lyricist and guitarist of the New York City based band Interpol...

Maybe he's looking for inspiration for depressing lyrics about getting shot up in the ghetto.
  • There are several really good reasons the original poster sounded suspicious, all of which have already been pointed out (and which are making me feel sheepish for believing him so quickly!).

But I just don't think that the user name is really that strong of a reason to suspect this story is fake. A name like "Paul Banks" doesn't sound like it would be that uncommon, if this user were using his real name. And if it doesn't come from his real name, it's just an online handle -- I mean, is anything *I* write less credible because my user name here comes from Prince's girlfriend from Purple Rain?
  • I guess paulbanks should come out and defend himself, but that doesn't seem to be taking place. Maybe the trauma is just starting to kick in and he is unable to type a response?
  • I would say, Apollonia, that everything you write becomes more credible because you've picked the name of Prince's girlfriend in Purple Rain.
  • Subject: i believe it

i didn't even know paul posted on this forum since i haven't read anything on here in weeks. i live with paul and this story is totally true...he woke me up thursday to tell me this happened. it doesn't matter if you believe it or not, it only matters if we all stay safe in this neighborhood.
as for me, i'll think twice before i walk alone at night again.

    peace to everyone- beck
