that is the north side of crown heights not far from the albany and weeksville housing developments.shootings happen often in that neighborhood.
  • It happened right off of Utica ave and St Johns Plc. This area is Crown Heights and not considered Weeksville.

Trying to dodge a spray of gunfire, a deliveryman was hit in the leg by stray bullets yesterday during a wild Brooklyn shootout, police sources said.

Richard Ramlal, 32, and his partner, Donald Stringer, were delivering beer and soda to a deli on St. Johns Place in Crown Heights shortly after 1 p.m. when the lead started flying.

"I had a flashback to Vietnam. It was a war zone," said Stringer, 59.

"I was standing between the cars with bullets flying everywhere. We were making a delivery. Wrong place. Wrong time," said Stringer, who was not hit.

Police sources said a gunman in a gray sedan let loose more than seven rounds and hit his target, Alex White, 26, of Brooklyn, as he walked along St. Johns Place.

"They hit the intended target five times in the chest. It was some shooting," a police source said.

The getaway car then took off southbound on Schenectady Ave.

Despite his wounds, White managed to hobble across the street and bang on the door of FDNY Battalion 38 for help.

"We heard the gunfire. I've been here long enough to know to wait until the shooting stops before I go out. The young fellows, you have to hold 'em back," said Battalion Chief Kevin Byrnes.

A trail of blood led up to the firehouse and a shell casing was later found inside.

Ramlal was found lying wounded near his delivery truck. Firefighters bandaged and stabilized Ramlal and White.

White was in critical condition at Kings County Hospital. Ramlal was in stable condition at Brookdale University Hospital with a fractured right leg, family members said.

"It's horrible. He was just trying to do his job," said his wife, Sharon Ramlal.

When the shooting started, Ramlal "went down and played dead," said his cousin Roxana Deepoo, 22.

"He was just tying to make a living doing his family business. That's how it happens in our days - anyplace, anytime, anyone. You don't have to be a criminal," she said.

A neighborhood barber said the gunplay did not bode well as the weather heated up.

"It's just the start of the summer. It's the start of the crazy time," he said.
