brunch blues — Brooklynian

brunch blues

i went to visit my friend in williamsburg saturday and had the best brunch ive eaten in a long time. we went to this place on union right off the L stop at metropolitan ave. it was about 5 blocks north up union. I forgot the name but it was this tiny little southern place. totally hipstered out but god damn i had this thing called a wobbler ( blue berry cobbler on top of belgian waffles with whip cream and fried sugared walnuts. it was the freaking best thing ive had in months.

i used to live in willamsburg for 5 years before i moved to prospect heights and i have to say brunch ( and to a lesser extent the pizza ) is the only thing i miss about the place. enids off makeran park is also insanely good as well. there were also a crazy amount of hot 20 something women wearing short skirts and tank tops with no bras but thats getting off point.

as it stands now if i want to really get a good brunch locally i walk all the way down to dizzy's on 9th street and 8th ave. im officially over toms, beast has like 4 things on the menu and the usual is out of commission. has anyone tried brunch at burrito bar? ive seen there menu and it looks interesting.

anyway if im missing something let me know.

  • i found brunch at burrito bar to be kind of lame. i am however a big fan of brunch at le gamin on vanderbilt, though the service is always so effing slow. in PS, i cannot get enough of the israeli breakfast at miriam on 5th ave.

Tavern On Dean offers a really nice brunch menu

I second Le Gamin as the closest approximation to continental brunch around here. And I don't mind the less than rapid service (within reason) -- it wouldn't be French otherwise ;)
  • le gamin is slow and if your not in the mood for crepes your out of luck. ive been to tavern on dean a few times and while you do get good bang for your buck the menu is a bit uninspired. also the place reeks of beer from the night before and it makes me a little naucshous.
  • jgregorie:

the restaurant is called union picnic!

    my best friend works there.

and it is oh so good.
  • sounds like Deacon Blue may be a good option as well based on some initial reviews.

i found a couple of spots that i like in the PS/PH area.

    1. Rose Water at 6th and Union. Healthy and fresh tasting.
    2. Cafe Shane, near Washington & St. Johns. Their breakfast burrito is consistently good. I'm from TX, so I'm a breakfast burrito snob.
    3. New Prospect Cafe, on Flatbush near Grand Army. They have an amazing mexican omlet.

I enthusiastically second that. And at $9, reasonably priced too!

I have had several really good meals at Rose Water, although the wait there can be long if you get there on the later side. As it's a bit of a walk for us that's not so good if you're hungry already!

I've always had decent service times and good food at Le Gamin, and like the yard. And the Beast has good food, although diffident-to-just clueless service.
  • le gamin has more than crepes on their brunch menu. of course, I see nothing wrong with subsisting on ham, cheese & bread in various formulations so I can eat there all the time and it is currently my favorite brunch in the nabe.

have you tried nick's on vanderbilt?

tavern on dean is a decent brunch, too.
  • Gamin and Tavern on Dean are my favorite brunch spots in the nabe, with Castillo being close behind. Melt (just outside the nabe) also has a nice brunch. Burrito Bar is lame at any time of day.
  • what's israeli breakfast?
  • My wife and I love Melt - but they have terrible hours. Brunch starts at 11:30, for example, and on two different occasions we arrived for other meals and the damn place was closed for a 'private party'. But the food is tasty, the service is fine and the price is right.

Beso on Fifth is also good, but far, and if you are in for a even slightly longer walk, Pequeno in Ft. Greene (its not TOO far) has nice big (and cheap) breakfasts.
  • someone needs to open a sister-restaurant to fabien's in our hood. those baked eggs are some of the best things i've ever had, and i hate having to schlep over to bburg for them. (and they are worth the schlep)

Tavern on Dean. Brunch is huge and relatively cheap. The service is always friendly and the drinks are stiff.
