Who and how much to tip at the salon?
I am not a salon regular so the tipping issue isn't clear to me. In fact, the last time I got a real hair cut was nearly 15 years ago by my Mom's best friend who had hands like a butcher; hence, my reluctantcy to go anywhere near shears again. (I just cut it myself here and there or had my sister trim it.) So I finally went to get my hair straightened - one of those pricey thermal reconditioning treatments - and I noticed another customer in the salon went over and tipped the woman who washed her hair (I think she just had a cut and style). I had 3-4 people work on my hair throughout the time I was there, not including the woman who washed it. In fact, I also had someone bring me iced coffee, fluff my back pillow, and bring me magazines. Was I supposed to go and hand a tip to each person who worked on my hair at the end? I just gave the main lady with whom I made the appointment and who is also the salon owner one of those small envelopes with a tip and figured she would distribute it to her assistants who helped her. It was a generous tip but I walked out feeling totally stupid. I hope that they aren't in the back room laughing at me or have a wanted poster up of me. What is the etiquette on tipping in salons in New York?

It seems there are a lot of people to tip in the salons now. I tip obviously my hair cutter 15-20%, then the coat check a couple bucks, the hair washer $5.00 (more if that person has to do the blow dry too). I don't think I have ever tipped the person who brought me an ice tea though also?? Uh oh, is that why I hate my last haircut??
Curious what other people tip because it is a mystery. -
15-20% is the standard, plus a few bucks for the person who washes your hair ($5 is plenty). If it's the owner cutting your hair, don't tip.

I also give 15-20% to the stylist. $3 to the washer, unless i'm getting color then i'll give $5.
i didn't know the woman who cut my hair was the owner. i was tipping her, but when i found out she was the owner, i didn't feel right just not giving her a tip anymore. i probably should just explain, but i'm too much of a wimp. -
since i'm math dyslexic and i can't do percents (and now would not be the time to try and teach me, please), what's the 15-20 percent of $60?

$9-12 -
well, it seems i'm under-tipping, i just didn't realize by how much.
then again, they know me personally and know i have like 2 cents in the bank and i always bring them pottery.
