soda closing?! — Brooklynian

soda closing?!

edited November -1 in Prospect Heights
scandalous rumormongering time; apparently the 2 partners who own soda are getting along as well as tenet and cheney and plan to just up and close by the end of the week. farewell to pierogis and often indifferent bartenders, not to mention baking soda.

  • good, that place sucks
  • I was in there last night. Service was worse than ever! And I definitely got the idea that there was some drama up in there, although can't be more specific than that. Despite the crappy service, I really hope they don't close. I can't really imagine the neighborhood without it. Hmmm...guess we'll see.

They do serve the most delicious BLT I've ever had in my life. And with lots o' room, many beers on tap, and decent wings, and a back patio, I would miss it.
  • Ditto. I hope this isn't true. If so, I will have to find a new bar for my horrible, intractable, screaming kids to run around in.

Anyone know the real word here? Toly, you out there??!?

  • I heard the same. I guess that Robert quit, along with some others on Friday. I was there yesterday afternoon, and wow what I mess. All brand new staff on one of the busiest Sundays that I've seen. Poor waitress was literally running from table to table, forgetting orders, forgetting whole sections. After waiting 30 minutes for a round, we decided to forget it. We finally caught her attention to ask for the check and to cancel our drink order. She gave us a blank stare as if she had no idea what we were talking about. She acatually looked like she was 39 seconds from bursting into tears. I felt really sorry for her.

I'll be seriously bummed if they close.
  • place sucks :p. maybe we could get a cooler place.
  • I'd hate to see that place stay empty

    hahahaha dat's funny
  • I've been turned off on them ever since they got rid of the pool table.
  • i dislike their service last few times I went there with friends.
  • sounds like all the bashing is because of crappy service.

It would suck to lose a bar of that size in the nabe. Maybe cancel the food and just focus on drinks? Set up a smaller bar in the expanded area to take some of the crush of the front bar?

Back before they expanded it was cool to sit at the bar w/ frineds or just a book and grab a few. I always enjoyed their little pizzas.
  • Good space, horrible service. I once was kicked out for pointing out to the bartender that I had been waiting over 30 minutes for a drink (and it wasn't eve that crowded!). It'd be great to see something else go in there that where the staff is a little more welcoming and you actually can get the food/drinks you order.
  • Man, people are throwing dirt on the Soda before we have confirmation.

I want to hear from Toly before I get all sad-faced.
  • Someone call'em.

Sounds like new management is what's needed. That place is not lacking in clientele and customers -- it's pretty sad if the current owners can't keep it going. Poor customer service can never be an excuse for a business' demise -- if only that were true, we could get Target in Atlantic Center shut down tomorrow, along with all C-Towns and fast-food restaurants.

Come on... this can't be the whole story. Were you really asked to leave?? If so, then your "pointing out" must have been a bit more direct than you let on.
  • well dailyheights. me and my friends almost got kick out too and the post is some where here or moved.

Nope. Trust me, I'm pretty nonconfrontational and really try to give service people the benefit of the doubt given how much crap they put up with. Every single bartender and server I have encountered in my five visits here were just awful, incompetant, and forgot just about every single order I placed. I once waited an hour for a beer during non peak hours. I've known quite a few people who have been kicked out for pointing out their orders never came or they weren't getting any service.
  • i always enjoy the place when i go there. and the blt is great.
  • Well, I must admit, I complained quite a bit to the bartenders and waitress about the service. Ok, I was a bitch about it. And honestly, they were actually sympathetic and understanding. I definitely did not get kicked out. Something weird is going on there...our waitress mentioned something about one of the new bartenders being horrible and that he was the owner's son. I saw him give her two blue drinks and she said, "What are these?" and he answered, "Blue margaritas!" and she said, "I asked for two bloody mary's!" It was a mess all around.
  • Everybody chill, this will pass. The bar is going through a neccessary change. It has to die for a bit to get it back into shape, and by shape I mean getting the second owner out. You don't know all the politics behind this and you probably won't, I'm surely not going to tell you everything but suffice to know that errors like letting the garden close down for a whole summer is her fault, the current vibe you are recieving from the staff is her fault. Any one who has been "Thrown out" for merely pointing out that their food was late is seriously deluded, you either got rude with the bartender at a moment when it was less than covienient to deal with you or you got angry and walked out later convincing your self that you were thrown out. No one who works at that bar would maliciously toss any of you for the simple complaint that they hear all day. Now if you want to support the reopening of Soda under its former glorious owner, you will go to Noona Restaurant and buy some food cause he is gonna need the money for lawyers, or you could just complain until it dies and then find something else to collectively whine about.

it's a neighborhood bar, be neighborly.
  • So... no beers in the garden for a bit?
  • where (and what) is Noona? and do they serve bangin' BLTs =P~
  • So, Ok, Is Toly is in control?

Anyone say vested interest much: http://brooklynian.com/forums/search.php?search_author=ChimChim

I am well aware of the concept of a neighborhood bar--and smart enough to know when someone is being rude or insulting. thanks for the tip off on noona, I'll make sure not to go there as well. I prefer to give my money to people who are civil in return.
  • No the garden is fine now, I'm talkin about what happened last year. what you are seeing now at Soda is the result of a yearsworth of crap piled load after load by the second owner who only became fully involved in the buisness just last year B4 that she collected the money occasionaly and otherwise was silent. It's not fully established that the bar is gonna close, but Know that the employees who can afford to quit have because it is the only way to oust this Blood sucking Tick burrowed deep into Sodas flesh. Please if you are going to go to Soda Know what you are walking into and treat the remaining staff with care and nice tips, because they are supporting their children and may soon be out of a job as well. Oh and don't badger them for gossip, this situation sucks and we should not exacerbate it by reminding them of the current hell they are in. WORD!
  • Subject: hmm

great space shitty service. it's true.

i still hang out there though cause i like the space and then kvetch when the service stinks. hopefully they will open up a super rad bar and host weekly burlesque!

FWIW, the user ChimChim is not an owner of Soda.
  • ahhh...

now this would make sense, i was there on Saturday, and it appeared that the 2 of the bartenders were brand new ( or just in the wrong place). There was another bartender so irratated about what was going on there, you could visible tell she wanted to just scream, also kinda wondering why one of the owners was there, i've never seen her there before...
  • If it's true, good riddance. Last time I was at that place the deep fryer was broken, so roughly 2/3 of the menu was unavailable. Isn't this guy Toly also involved in the failed Mexican restaurant? I'm beginning to think that anybody can get a business loan these days.
