soda closing?!

I couldn't possibly state this better myself.
Indeed. -
I understand how people who are friends with the employees of Soda would likely see things differently (and, let's be fair, probably be treated differently than the general public), but I agree with WhyFi---I shouldn't have to invite you over to my house to get decent service...or to get service at all. I have friends who have owned unsuccessful restaurant ventures and as much as I cared about those people I was able to look at the criticism in a constructive way and see where it was coming from (and honestly, most of it was valid). While I respect people sticking up for their friends who work there, the service problems still remain--it's nothing personal against those employees, who, from what I can understand, are working in less than great conditions. It's just a bad situation all around for both employees and customers.
I really hope the part about cover charges is a joke. -
As someone who generally gets good service from Soda becuase I know folks by name, I still have to say the service sucks. You shouldnt have to tug a friends elbow to get them to send a waitress over, or to get a pint poured. I dont see how non-regulars deal with it.
The time I have put into Soda has more to do with its convenient location, a couple of friendships and buyback. Foodwise, culturewise, decorwise, vibewise the place has always sucked. I have been privy to some of the dumbest conversational exchanges ever in that place, and find the weekend vibe desperate and despressing. The omni-presence of the hustling doesnt help either.
Coincidentally the one time I went to visit Toly's other bar in Wburg I wasnt there for ten minutes before some cat with a cane came up to me and asked "If I like to party." The irony of this in relation to its kid friendlyness is fairly self-evident.
Oh... and the music is too loud. And with a couple of rare exceptions the DJs suck. Soda made money because middle class folks who currently populate the neighborhood hate pretension more than anything. Authenticity is the balm for the gentrifier's guilt.
I will be out in the back of Flatbush Farm this summer. Happy Full Moon Folks... -
Like several other posters here, I've voted with my feet. Beast is a good alternative - they actually know how to run a business. I also enjoy Flatbush Farm, which has prompt, competent service. Both places have interesting menus. And, of course, there is always Mooney's, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this Friday, May 5. Free buffet and live music. (And no, I don't work for them or own the place...)

oh, I definitely don't think you should have to be a regular to get good service. and, as I've conceded in other threads and this thread, the service at soda leaves a lot to be desired. I generally refrain from going there on weekend nights and other times when everything degenerates because of crowds and/or the not so attentive staffers working that day.
our last Soda happy hour - we got fantastic service. probably because we've bitched about it a lot but continued to give the bar business. it may be slow, but folks DO learn and know that they'll get a better tip if they provide superior service.
also - I've seen a lot of folks walk into sole with a bag from pieces to find matching accessories. it might not be to your taste, but the joint does business. the few times I've been in there I've overheard discussions about orders of custom leather or fur jackets and coats. I'd bet that those orders are lucrative enough to keep the place in business. -
Its Over, Please to enjoy.

just ate at Soda last night... and received punctual service at a patio table from 3 wait-staff eager for my tip money. I wasn't harrassed or thrown out. I'm actually kind of jealous that I haven't been victim to the horrible service and rude staff. What gives!?! :x

I'm reasonably certain you were workin' the middle. -
Subject: Soda Bar
Soda Bar is indeed staying open. Speaking as a very recent ex-employee, I would like to let you know that the employees who have quit working, quit for VERY good reasons but the bar remains open. The remaining staff should be praised, for they have endured immature, selfish, and demoralizing acts from both owners. If you are a fan of Soda, and you don't mind supporting the actions of the owners, then please remain a patron. The remaining employees are trying very hard to keep it together for the much awaited summer season. -
Speaking as someone who has had every Soda employees, owner, and patron in their home (since I lived at 629 Vanderbilt Ave), I can only say good riddance, and I hope Toly rots in hell for being a horrible person.
Same goes for every other idiot (and suspect there are many among you in the brooklynian.com community) who decided to be a total loud-mouthed douchebag at 3 am on a weekday night.
Thank god this awful place is being closed. Terrible service, awful music, and idiotic, frat-esque patrons who vomit on my steps every morning. Good riddance and if you bitch about this, I swear to god I will show up to your house at 3:30am to seranade you to a typically charming drunken rendition of "Stella was a diver".
PH is better off without such a terrible neighbor. Don't live on that block? Don't complain that it closed, because you sure as hell didn't put up with it being open, whiners. -
Subject: Closed or open?
So is Soda closed or opened? Or is it too soon to determine. I walked by a few times and it seems open, people sitting at the bar having a drink. It sad that the ownders can't come to an agreement on how to buy out or re-incorp. If people were that unhappy as patrons and servers, this is the best opportunity to redo the way its run. It would be a shame to lose that back court yard. -

An Ode to (the Old) Soda:
My stumble home around the corner spot. Crowd of many ages, races...a reflection of the neighborhood. Too small pool cue always made me happy. A great local haunt. Oh, Soda. Did our love kill you? -

Here's a swell idea....DON'T MOVE IN OVER ABAR IF YOU'RE GONNA WHINE ABOUT IT! I moved in across from ratnerville and I plan on dealing with construction. Did it suddenly surprise you that there was noise on the street?

come on. You know another bar is just gonna go in there right?
Welcome to New York. It's noisy here.
I for one am sorry it's closing. OTOH they did get a bread delivery today so they may still be open. -
Subject: guy who moved in near bar complaining about noise-
what a tool. your complaining about noise because you choose to live near bar. what kind of moron moves in above a bar if he is concerned about noise. you should be tied and and beat down. -
Did it ever occur to you two that mancunian moved to 629 Vanderbilt BEFORE Soda's arrival and that he left thereafter because of the noise created by the bar's patrons?
Obviously not. -
Seriously. Some people have lived here for a while, and can remember a time before Soda opened, believe it or not.

I went a few weeks ago on a warm Saturday night and it was on and popping.
What they should do is abandon all service, make a $10-15 cover charge a night and make it BYOB... sucks for the waiters, but it seems to suck for them anyways, and there are plenty of bars to bartend at in NYC...
I liked the vibe and the music... but the service leaves something to be desired... and like many said already it's a great space that would be a shame to go to waste. I hope they work everything out. -

 That's gotta be the worst idea I've ever heard. -
I agree with everyone who said the service stinks. I am not a regular by any means, in fact, I've only been there a few times. Each and every visit, I've found the service was atrocious. I like the sofas, but I am not willing to sit on them and wait around for my drink/food to show up, and for the waitress to bring my bill. Last time, I had to go up to the bar to ask them how much I owed, just so I could finally leave.

mancunian - i feel your pain. i lived at 629 before soda opened and when a crazy guy tried to open a bar called "michelines" in the space soda now occupies. the landlord is a slumlord and there was never any soundproofing, and when soda opened and they opened the backyard, it was horrible. so loud. living above the place sucked, and i wasn't even on the 2nd floor. i could feel the music through my floor up on the 3rd floor.
i moved out a few years ago and went back to soda on a saturday night a few weeks ago. the vibe, patrons, and service all sucked. good riddance. -
Who could forget Micheline's and their basement Dancehall parties complete with strippers... a neighborhood classic!

Subject: News flash...
Soda does suck. As a neighbor, I've given soda more than their share of chances. But their continually sucky service has driven me and other people away. I can tolerate waitstaff that are busy, or new, but no excuse for rudeness. The decor sucks as well. Beast is much better, they have happy hour all weekend. And damn good service and beer. -
The location is great AND the establishment has been here forever. It would be wonderful if the (potential) new owners would keep some of the hang out feeling during the evenings and later--but have some sort of family/neighborhood breakfast-lunch sort of thing. Kind of between a diner and a not-overpriced another place. The challenge with ProHo is that either the location looks great but the coffee stinks or the service is not great because no one knows how to manage inexperienced workers AND deal with the public AND understand how to market in our neighborhood. Find a niche for Pete's sake. There are so many poets, parents, gen-x's, boomers, empty nesters, painters, creative professionals, old-timers, financial professionals! ProHo is a neighborhood of folks who work in the "city" or have other reasons to be away from the "hood" and yet need a place to meet. The Usual and Beast have the feeling. Give us GOOD SERVICE for goodness sake!

Poets?? Plural?? Seriously?

There is absolutely no difference between soda and beast. Same people, same place. -

A quarter the wait time at Beast and much friendlier. Is there some sort of bipolarity going on there? -
But the bartender's at Beast have never heard of buybacks. Is, apparently, becoming an alien concept throughout the neighborhood.
Howdy, Stranger!
