Increased crime and cavalier cops
This was posted earlier this week in another venue by a long-time PH resident. He/she asked that I anonymize the post, and emphasize that it was a wake-up call for people who have "gotten complacent ... this used to happen EVERY DAY."
I was just told that the letter carrier got her bag stolen today in broad daylight. On Thursday night, someone tried to break in into my apartment building by smashing the glass door. And last week, on Saturday, at 11:30 am someone got mugged on our street.
The police, when they showed up for the broken door (they didn't show for the mugging last week) told one of our residents who could ID the man, including a picture on a camera phone, that basically they weren't going to do anything about it.
I know its the summer and I know the weather is very bad, and I have been here 19 years and have seen worse. However, the police, who understandably might have things they consider more important to do, should not be so cavalier in their response when they come at all.
How do we report this to the police liaison group? Does it function in the summer? When we call the precinct the person who answers the phone says 'at least they showed up.' How do we get more attention?

By the way, our precinct does have a police liaison group that meets monthly, even in summer, and may actually be meeting next Monday night. This page has the details:

Never had an issue with the mail, relatively speaking, but let's not stray away from the topic: Crime.
I insist that this neighborhood become more responsible and less complacent and form a neighborhood watch.
I've been known to haunt these boards with incivility (I think that's the label I've received), but crime in PH is not treated seriously by the NYPD.
I have talked to many residents and that have been victims and their story, regarding the 77th, is similar: What do you expect when you live in PH.
That's not the response I'd like to hear.
All issues aside witht his board and DH, I'd like it if we formed a group of locals and went down to the precinct and meet with the hierarchy.
Showing some unity can make a difference -
Subject: Sat night (jul-30) mugging on Sterling Place
just found out that a guy who lives in my bldng (on Sterling btwn Washington and Underhill) was mugged on the front steps of our building last Sat nite at 10:30 pm. he was talking on his cell phone. two young men ran up the steps, one put him in a choke hold and put a sharp object in his back, the other man stood in front. They asked for money (which he gave them) and then they ripped the cell phone out of his hand and ran towards Washington Ave headed towards St. Johns. He called the police and filled out a report and looked at mug shots, but was not able to identify either man. The police told him this has been happening quite a bit in the neighborhood. They said that people talking on cell phones are being targeted for a couple of reasons, one, to get the cell phone, and two, people are easier to mug while talking on the phone because they are not paying attention. They mentioned that this is happening all over the city but particularly in our neighborhood.
I don’t have any further information but wanted to share the info. -

those police liaison group meetings are open to everyone? :?:

Yes. The next meeting of the 77th Precinct Community Council is September 12 at 7:30 PM. The location is usually the station house at 127 Utica Avenue, but you should call 77th Precinct Community Affairs at (718) 735-0634 to confirm, as it says on their website.

I hate to constantly pick on this scab, we need to form a group and go down to this meeting.
I'm not sure what'll take to convince you, but the recent threads posted, regarding crime, on the DH forum is enough.
A couple of days ago, I had my two kids with me outside our house when this guy, holding a brick, threatened to hit us.
I immediately grabbed the kids, handed them over to my neighbor, standing nearby, and took off after him. After tackling him, I informed him that his next visit on my block would be his last (Words weren't the only thing exchanged). I ran back for my phone and called the precinct.
About 10 minutes or so, a police cruiser came by and asked me for a description. One of the officers asked me if he were medicated, to which I responded with silence and a shrug of my shoulders. Another friend in PH says the same drifter dealt him a similar circumstance.
He is Caucasian, about 6 feet 175 lbs, long hair and a beard. Dirty and wears a blue brace on his right shin. Anyone spot him make sure you keep your distance. I took his brick away, but who knows what else he's holding -
From one of our neighbors blogs http://ltjbukem.blogspot.com/:
Last night around 10:45 pm my husband was reading to our daughter when
he heard a woman screaming, he looked out the window and saw a man
struggling on top of a woman outside our door. He ran outside with a
baseball bat in his hand and joined 4 other men , 2 from the basketball
courts, and 2 from other houses, and successfully trapped the guy who
was trying to rape this woman. They called the cops who took him in
handcuffs to the precinct. Obviously the woman was very upset and all I
can hope is that she press charges.
This really has me upset especially with what happened to Alice - I pray it is not the same guy that the police let go
I will definitely attend the next 77th Pct. mtg and am willing to draft up some sort of formal complaint to read at that meeting. Just e-mail me with what you would like me to add. I can go by myself but would love to have anyone else attend. I am willing to drive there also (I can fit 3 comfortably in the car - 4 if someone wants to sit in the middle). -

Not like it really matters, but just for curiosity's sake...what street was this?

All shit aside, I want nothing but to have good relationships with my neighbors.
I have been a bit defensive on these boards, but no one willed me. I take complete responsibility for my past posts' and I ask that this forum forgive me.
I am, though, frustrated that with all this crime, many have avoided the issue. I will be at the 77th on Monday and hoping to see all who have a similar concern -

if you're the infamous Guest, i don't really think that people were avioding the issue... for me personally, i just didn't want address the subject with someone that was acting in an asshole manner, even if it's a subject that greatly concerns me... i was really tempted, because (again, if you're A G), it IS obvious that you're genuinely concerned with issue... just that your methods don't exactly match what i would do...

do we have to be proactive? absolutely. is confronting the perp a good thing? yes, i would have to agree that it is a good thing, in most instances. is physically threating them the best way to get them to change their behavior? not at all, in my opinion. maybe the short term results will be good, but eventually, i feel that it'll come back to bite you in the ass- the "might makes right" approach only works while you're still the mightiest. that won't be forever. eventually, that kid that you chased down the street for throwing bottles will grow bigger, and he'll have an axe to grind. that guy that you were going to punch in the face for not picking up his dog's crap, well, he may come back with an equalizer of some sort- bat, knuckles, gun, posse... short term, great results. long term, i see the potential for escalation. there has to be a better way. -

Glad that you're taking the initiative to attend the meeting. I'd like to think that message boards like this will inspire more people to get involved in the community.

Regarding your past posts. This is sure to be a controversial decision... but I'm willing to forgive you.
HOWEVER, if you want to participate in this board anymore, you need to provide us with a way to contact you privately. For example, you could register a username so we can send you private messages though the board (I promise, no secret spying devices or black helicopters are involved). Or you can talk to us through e-mail using a super-anonymized Yahoo/Gmail/Hotmail address. Whatever. Just do SOMETHING, anything at all, so we can send you messages privately, because we are not going to play out any more personal dramas publicly on these boards!
Also, you have to understand and accept that when you fly off the handle, we can't leave the posts on the board. Just take a deep breath and remember that you are here talking to your neighbors! Remember the golden (and only) rule of Daily Heights: BE NICE OR LEAVE! -
That's not cool.

Hey guest - you can e-mail me directly and we can attend the meeting together - [email protected]. I will be on vacation next week but e-mail me the week after.

Subject: Underhill/ St. Johns last night
Anyone know what happened at the corner of St Johns/Underhill last night? A lot of cop cars and people out on their stoops watching--couldn't tell what happened. -

What time was that? I was outside several times last night and didn't see/hear anything. -
it was sometime between 11:00 and 12:00 last night. there were about 5 police cars and two cars in the street one on underhill and one on st johns. A bunch of officers were standing on the corner talking, but it didn't look like anything had happened
-
This is all quite horrifying. I don't suppose anyone has a description of the man who attempted to rape that woman...?
I called Tish James' office about what happened to me, but no one ever returned my call. -
No idea how Neighborhood Watch works, but I'd be interested in helping out. Was victim of a crime a couple weeks back and want to make a safer 'hood.
My experience with 77th: well, they didn't believe what happened to me in the least. But they were okay. Having to go to the precinct and wait in line for a form to mail in to get police report --- pretty dumb red tape though. -
Sorry to hear that you were victimized, but the PH community is not a neighborhood watch community.
They spread news of crime quickly (Thanks DH), but they're turned off by the 77th's reaction.
This is where the natives should take action. Validate someone of this community in the next election and run the campaign on this agenda: CRIME (Anti-FCR as well). I bet they win. Now you have someone on your side taking aim on the issue that matters the most. I can live without a hello from local strangers. Hearing that someone is victimized is unacceptable.
I nominate DH. Anyone second it -
I guess I'll just buy a gun then.
-
I nominate this guy.

A gun and Curtis:
Remember the old adage "If you look for it, you'll find it"? (Trouble)
Stay away from the former and the latter -

I own a big gun. I see it more as a liability though. A big dog's going to serve you better if you can have one. -
Maybe a cross-bow.
