What happened to the Cornerstone Pub on Cortelyou? — Brooklynian

What happened to the Cornerstone Pub on Cortelyou?

Was walking by tonight and saw a sign on the window indicating that the 'landlord' had the place closed down. What gives? Seemed like a great location for a pub.

Anyone know what happened?

  • Good question. That building had been for sale for a while, maybe it was sold with conditions that Cornerstone had to leave. Anyways, that bar seemed to be doing a pretty lousy business except when they had jazz bands. Great location but just nothing to attract people in there on a daily basis.
  • For ppeople who didnt grow up in Brooklyn.. This was the local working man's bar in the neighborhood. Well it is hard to convert that in to hip.. young.. newly discovered brooklyn kind of patrons..

I don't have the scoop on what is going on here.
  • It's not hard to convert it, you just need to do things like pay rent and have beer.
  • Exactly. They didn't pay their rent. And it often smelled awful in there. And I mean, I don't believe in feng shui and stuff, but the way that place was arranged made me not want to sit down and hang out at all.
And that "workingman's bar" was recently renovated to look like that, wasn't it? Besides which, 773 is pretty working class but it seems to be doing ok, and it's weird but fun. Cornerstone was depressing and had no beer. That space is cool. I really hope they turn it into somethign good -- aka not a dunkin donuts or some chain.
  • Years ago, they were Alexanders run by the same family for decades, but they sold it. It reopened as Boxers and then, when an inspector found an underage child at the bar, was closed. This guy had done MAJOR work on re-building the place and STARTED with a great selection of booze but had impossible problems with beer on tap. I think that was one of his problems...
