-

Man i kill a whole bunch of kittens last night. that doesn't sound too bad :pvs I jerk off or masturbated all night last night. -
Remember: when you kill a kitten, God masturbates.
Is this thread going downhill? -
Gives new meaning to Cream of - ... uh, I guess that that doesn't work in this case, eh?

I grew up in Detroit, lived in East Lansing for ten years, then moved to NYC. I was very aware of my accent and careful to say, fr'instance, 'Sa-tur-day' and 'Sun-day' as opposed to 'Sayrdy' and 'Sundee'. Nevertheless after being in NY a couple of years I happened to sit next to some Henry Higgins at a bar who pegged me as a Detroiter in the space of about ten minutes ... not just a Midwesterner but a Detroiter. -
I was born and raised in Detroit.....been in Brooklyn for 8 months now.
I don't think I have a Detroiter accent. I didn't even know a Detroit accent existed....I say Saturday with a silent "t" ,nobody ever pronounces the "t" in most cities , unless you want to be all proper, and Sunday is Sun-Day, I've never heard them pronounced "Sayrdy" and "Sundee" in Detroit, maybe it's a Lansing thing. -
Em26 wrote: I say Saturday with a silent "t" ,nobody ever pronounces the "t" in most cities
Have to disagree with that.
I pronounce "Saturday" with the "t" somewhere between a "t" and a "d", more towards the "d" in normal speech - "Sad-er-day", which it seems to me is how most people pronounce it. -

Most people where? This word is spoken by approximately 2 billion people. I happen to pronounce it with a glottal stop, "sa!urday", a non-rhotic r, and a triphthong on the ay. -

Hmmm , okay...silent "t" is how I think most people pronounce it....meaning this way:
Saturday = Sa-urday (real fast)
Water = wa-err
I think I hear a "d" sound.....kinda....I keep repeating the two , and now I am confusing myself here #-o ....I don't know how to explain ...come to game night and I'll show you both.
-
Sorry, by "it seems to me is how most people pronounce it" I simply hoped to be less exclusive than Em26's "nobody ever pronounces", at least in regards to the U.S.
Where are you from anyway, Dr.? My guess is South Africa. -
Em26 wrote: Water = wa-err
Sorry, I can't wrap my head around that one at all. -
laura wrote: [quote=Em26]Water = wa-err

It's probably a small glottal stop. wa'err. There's a natural progression of dropping hard t (in British RP, almost never heard in the US) to softer d (normal in the US) to dropped ' (normal in various dialects, including Estuarine which is on the ascendency). -

I get that, but it's very hard for me to imagine 'water' being pronounced that way in Michigan.
So where are you from, Dr. J? -
you guys sound like you pronounce it the british common people would say water and saturday
haha. -

I'm seriously giving up being from anywhere. Once you've moved enough times, cities, continents, it no longer makes sense. As for pronunciation, mine has been mangled a few times (went from t to d to ' over the course of 20 years under different influences and I'm on the way back to d and being forced to learn a new third way for r); the main daily challenge in NY, with 2 in 5 born abroad, working out wft people are saying and trying say things in a way they might understand.
So where are you from, Dr. J?
Maybe young people from Detroit dropping t could be the bleeding edge in consonantal drift.
AW: some pronunciations which you may think of as 'British common people' are now English suburban upper-middle class, particularly for Gen-X and later. -
Dr J is from Zanzibar.

Well to be strictly correct, I was born on the cnr of W 45th and 9th Av; it was only later it reopened as a bar. -
Right by Rudy's.

Just heard a crazy homeless guy going off on the sidewalk today, and he reminded me of the Vagina Power lady. I think he was talking about Muslims ending up in Christian hell - here is the quote:
"So now he's burning in hell! Fire all up in that ass! And he's screaming Allah! Allah! Allah!..."
I guess I think of the VP lady because as far as I'm concerned, she definitely onws the "x all up in your y" format -
Mamacita wrote: Dr J is from Zanzibar.

I'd call that accent Australia puro, I don't care where 'e's lived.
Clearly, I didn't talk to you long enough, J.
Vagina lady is scary cool . . .

watch out Dr Ruth! -

Let me put it this way: Kylie and I may have grown up a few blocks from each other around the same time. But if you compared tapes of both of us (after removing the pitch tracking and sundry digital processing in her case) then our accents would be quite different these days, and someone who'd always lived in that neighborhood wouldn't pick either of us as a local. -
but can you sing "i can't get you out of my head"??
-
brooklynpotter wrote: but can you sing "i can't get you out of my head"??
At least as well as she could without the production team and backing tapes. I mean, I've got reasonable pitch, though I'm a bit rusty. However, I certainly don't have her figure, moves, and was lousy at working the audience.
