Subject: yes i am here sorry i am new to the area and board....
wow...
i just posted my experience, and its amazing how people have come to the conclusion that i am lying, ok let me answer
doctorj: West-by-Northwest on Prospect from Underhill to Vanderbilt
1) Dude's named after a guy in interpol
- my name is really Paul Banks maybe using my real name was a bad idea...
2) On a rainy night after dark it seems a bit odd that the poster could see that the shooter was wearing all red - especially since he was 40 yards away.
- anyone who has played a sport before can distinguish between red and black 40 yards away....
3) That he heard him mumbling... in the rain... at 40 yards.
mumbling, as if he said something and i couldnt hear due to the rain...
4) That the guy ids it as a small caliber gun.
small calibre as in i am from the VA/DC area, and gunshots arent a foreign sound to me. i can tell the difference between a 44 and a 22 calibre gun.
5) Guy’s a first time poster
just moved to area, what more can i say...
i dont understand why i have to come on here and defend myself, i was told about messagebaord from a friend, so decided to post the incident.
this is ridiculous... -
Heya Paul, sorry we put you on the defensive. We have had some incidents in which false info has been posted on the site, and I guess that makes some of us skeptical. For instance, a month or two ago someone posted that there had been a rape in broad daylight in Prospect Park that week; lots of searching on local news websites brought up nothing about it, and that poster never said anything about it again. And there was a guy a while back who claimed something happened on his block (it was a while ago and the details are fuzzy -- does anyone remember this?) that he later admitted he'd made up just to get people to pay attention to his post. I don't think it's always lying, though, necessarily -- I think it's easy for rumors to get posted as fact on discussion boards like this. Either way, it makes people less likely to automatically believe everything they read.
Hope you'll stick around -- I think you'll find this site is actually pretty friendly, and the neighborhood is as well. -
i really do appreciate the response, it's a bit overwhelming to post an incident as a warning, and then have it ripped apart phrase by phrase. i do understand the skepticism, considering issues that have happen in the past on this board, but by no means did i make this up...

Well, then, hopefully you reported the incident. What did the police have to say? Were you able to go around with them and try to pick the shooter out? Just interested in how they handled this. -

Basically, I just think no one wants to believe that shit can happen in their nabe and if they can plausibly deny it, it makes them (us) feel a tad bit better here. I am sure the posts were not meant as anything of a personal attack to you, per say. Like I said, we just don't like to hear such frightful things and if we can explain them away as a hoax, we can all sleep better. And it's true, there are a lot of trolls out here trying to sake things up. Case in point, postings on which gyms to go to, or to avoid! -
I have a question, did you report it?
-
Paul, sorry you got such negative responses from people
I am still not clear on what happened. Was this guy shooting at YOU or was he shooting at somebody or something else? Why on earth would he just start shooting at you? You poor thing! That's really scary. -
I just can't believe that the guy from Interpol rooms with Beck. I smell a collaboration CD, or at least some extraneous remix tracks on the import version of the next album.

Subject: apologies?
I really hope everyone who posted skepticism about this "noob" is going to apologize to him.
My stomach turned as I read those responses.
Sure, some skepticism is understandable, but couldn't you have considered his feelings if in fact he was telling the truth? After what he'd been through? Why did you all feel the need to force him to defend himself? What was the point of all that?
There was hardly even any reason to doubt him! Can't see red from 40 yards away? It's implausible that there'd be a crazy guy on the street of Brooklyn with a gun? I grew up in Brooklyn. Let me assure you there are lots of crazy people on the street with guns and sometimes they shoot them. Sorry if that makes you feel unsafe, but that's no reason to pick on a newbie to the board, even if he does have the same name as a semi-famous musician.
Is the point of this message board more to talk about whether there is trolling on the message board, or to talk about stuff like people getting shot at on the street?
But since I'm a noob too, please feel free to just dismiss me as a troll, too. -
Anybody else?

I'm keeping my eyes peeled for shell casings on this block which I walk very frequently. If anyone finds any, be sure to hand them over to the officers working this case; the ballistics experts could use such evidence to trace the perpetrator. -

Well, hopefully it wasn't a revolver. I'd hate to see you on a wild goose chase. And don't bother turning in anything larger than, say, .32 ACP. -

i'm still waiting to hear what the police had to say...
how did that go, mr. banks? what's been the follow-up? -

No one who lives nearby heard the gunshots (including me) and someone who was in Soda at the time disputes that part of the story. I would feel bad for doubting if the story was true, but I have enough reason. -
I'll totally apologize if he posts and lets us know if he reported this to the police. I'm sure the people who live on that block want to be in touch with them and see what's being done.
But I don't see the point of posting what, on the face of it, is a pretty wild event and then disappearing for a while, only to return later to defend the post without answering the most pertinent question: did he report it to the cops.
It's pretty simple - if this was reported to the police, then there will be a record of it, and I'll apologize, wholeheartedly.
If it wasn't reported to the police, I'd want to know why. What’s the point of reporting it on the board, and not the cops? That’s what makes this whole post seem dubious.
When you come on a neighborhood board and post something like this, and then vanish without answering any questions, it doesn’t help anyone. -

I have a new theory of this crime: n00bs DenverNougat, paulbanks, and beck are all actually the same person.
Late on the night of Thu 14th, he (or she) wandered West-by-Northwest down Prospect from Underhill to Vanderbilt wearing a red hat and red jacket. No one else around. Drew his or her .22 revolver (hence no shell casings) and fired several shots in the air, using a home-made silencer (hence no noisy report). Takes off the hat and jacket, paces out the 40 yards, makes like a one hell of a scared witness, runs the rest of the way to Soda. Doesn't report it to the police, for obvious reasons. Posts here as the witness and witness's roommate to throw suspicion off him/herself, and when some people don't buy it, posts as the sceptic DenverNougat to sow doubt that these events ever really happened. But we know something went down the night of the 14th, we know something here doesn't add up -- the truth is out there. -
That's genius.
