Tofu on 7th — Brooklynian

Tofu on 7th

edited November -1 in Brooklyn Eats
Anyone know how this place stays open? I stopped by today to try its namesake item (spicy tofu that was not spicy) and it was basically inedible
is there something I'm missing?

  • I used to get stuff there occasionally when I lived on 3rd and it was nothing special but fine ... the only things I ever got were broccoli with garlic sauce, soup, seaweed salad, and cold sesame noodles.
  • hunan delight has the best local chinese food. mr. wonton isn't bad, either.
  • I love Tofu's Double Happiness, actually. I've never been able to cook chicken like that. And I like that they don't put broccoli in EVERYTHING.
  • they do alot of take out. and i go there once a while. okayish stuff. too bad park slope doesn't have a better chinese veg place.
  • I like Hunan Delight on Union Street and 6th Avenue, but I am not impressed enough with its renovation -- especially since I prefer Hunan Delight's take-out -- to be happy with the foods' price increases. Hunan Delight has never screwed up any of my take-out food. I like Mango, but damn I've just got plain wrong WTF entrees from them as if the waiter was smoking crack as I placed my order. So the fact that Hunan Delight doesn't send me fried pork and eggplant when I order tofu soup, delights me.

I have never ate at Tofu on 7th Avenue because random strangers on the street near the plastic Egyptian guy -- I swear -- saw me checking out the menu and advised me to avoid Tofu on 7th at all costs. That spooked me. But if anyone can give it a thumbs up, I'll try it once.
  • Yeah--I actually love Hunan Delight, but I figure I should try to branch out a bit
Tofu's veg. won ton soup tastes similar to hunan's, only if you let the wontons get stale before resoaking them
I can see where they might do ok with chicken or something, especially since it seems like they use really sugary sauce on stuff, but I guess I was just really disappointed that 'Tofu on 7th' has absolutely the worst tofu I've ever had
and I'm off to the next veg friendly eatery...
  • I like Red Hot at 7th Ave and 10th if they aren't too far away for you. They have tons of veggie dishes and are willing to change this up for you. Plenty of veggie soups and apps as well.

I also wish we had more veggie places in the neighborhood.
  • Red Hot is not bad and their delivery can be so quick it's almost frightening, but Hunan Delight is so much better.
  • The place up 7th a bit is good, too. It used to be called East Cuisine, but it changed its name and menu to be kind of a pan-Asian greatest hits. (Was this place hurt by the fire the other day?)
  • tofu on 7th isn't all that bad if you know how to order. the white rice is far better than the brown. and if you're a vegetarian their options are quite good (vegetarian chicken mooshu is huge portion wise, not greasy and their hodgepodge fried noodles is also really delicious).
i've often wondered how they stay open especially as their waitstaff rarely smile and treat their customers as if they are in their way but they do a lot of takeout (perhaps as their 'atmosphere' is, well, not.)
all that said, their vegetable tofu soup is, again, plentiful and quite tasty.
stay away from the salad which is a bunch of raw vegetables, giant plain slices of tofu and the occaisional lettuce leaf.
as i live just down the street from them, i take out about once or twice a month. never been entirely dissapointed (except when their sesame veggie chicken advertised as being on something like a 'giant bed' of broccoli came layered on top of about 3 measly fainting stalks....
  • when i first came to the slope, i used to order from there pretty often. i especially liked their veggie beef, szechuan style and their moo shu. but over the years the quality of food definitely slipped. too bad.

I dont think so... I was on the avenue today and I think the restaurant you mean is there... and has another name.. looks kind of spruced up.
  • I used to order from Tofu years ago but stopped after I got a few inedible dishes in a row. Now, I love Vegetarian Palate on Flatbush. Their tenderloin tips with asparagus is really yummy and I never have to worry I might get the wrong dish with meat in it.

So weird. I was there on the same day and ordered the same thing. And I haven't been in that place in live 5 years or more, on account of it sucks.
  • Guess you have to know what to order - in my family's case, it's the Sesame Noodles, the Chicken Lo Mein, the Chicken with Broccoli, Double Happiness, and assorted soups (they all seem fine) - with that menu, everything has been fresh, fast, and none of us have contracted food poisoning - which is pretty much all one can ask of a delivery joint, yes?

Your "almost frightening" line amused me. I only ordered take out from Szechuan Delight (on 7th Avenue between Garfield Place and Carroll Street) once because I was frightened by how fast the food arrived. After I ordered, the phone was still warm from my hands when I heard the buzzer ring and thought, "there's no way in hell that can be my dinner," but it was. Even though I thought I was ordering a complex entree that had to be made on request, the rapid delivery made me suspect that I was receiving lunch special leftovers. The food tasted fine. Had the delivery person properly waited 10 minutes to appear, I would probably continue to order from them. It's nice to have the impression that your food is not microwaved buffet leftovers, even if it is.
  • I've tried many of the places you have mentioned, from Red Hot to Hunan Delight to even Tofu. Yuck!!! The only place is Szechuan Delight. Never had a bad vegetarian dish to day and yes, how scary is their speedy delivery? But hey, it's hot and yummy. Occasionally our order is oily, but not so bad and the brown rice is tastey, which is very rare.
