No No on 7th ave.. Cajun Food
I seem to be eating out a lot this weekend.. it is my birthday weekend.. and that is why so I have another Restaurant opinion ..this time No No on 7th Ave. We ate here one other time in the winter months. I thought out of the 3 gumbos the chicken was excellent. That night the ribs were over cooked and the other person who ordered a meat dish also siad the meat was over cooked.. so we had an average meal and never returned. This eve we stopped by with 6 people at about 7;30 and were told that we could have a table at 8;15 so we decided to do the Barnes and Nobles perouse and come back.. Dinner was lovely and the way people at the table ordered we had a huge variety and I tasted a lot of food. Once again the gumbo was great (don't get th duck.. sound sinteresting but salty), we had filet mingon.. excellent.. A fish dish that was lovely, various entrees including the popcorn shrimp which was a hit and dumplings and oysters.. The potatoes (mashed) were nothing special but the vegetable mix that was served as a side on the meat plates was grilled and seasoned to perfection with some herb that even my pal a specialist on determining flavors couldn't quite get at. We had a lovely bottle of merlot from Calif from 2002.. obviously selected because it was a cut above. the wait staff was lovely, the hostess apologetic about having us wait for a table. the only criticism I can give on service was no steak knife was provided when the meat came to the table... now come on.. an obvious over sight but no big deal.. I asked and it came stabbing over to the table in 30 seconds..Thumbs up on this place!!

Thanks for the review.
Your comment about the missing knife reminded me of how lack of important silverware annoys me. I've been served a hot bowl of soup with no spoon at various restaurans countless times. If I'm lucky, I get the spoon before my soup freezes. (Don't get me wrong, in the privacy of my own home, I'll happily eat with my face, but in an American restaurant, I tend to follow American society's dining rules). -

So that's what the avatar is!

I've been eating lunch there regularly. You get a hell of a lot of good food for what you pay. It's easily one of the best lunch deals on 7th Avenue.

Getting the right utensils on the table as they are needed is important when you dine out. Of course not enough to trash a restaurant in the case of No No but nevertheless. Your comment on hot soup made me think of something else.. This is totally personal preference but one of my friends who ate with us last night has this same quirk... I don't like to eat food when it is really hot and especially not if it is a food that has a blend of tastes and ingredients like stews and soups so I waited till that chicken Gumbo was not waffing off steam and ate it slowly as it got closer to warm temperature. Well that took 20 minutes. I asked that the bowl be left when the entrees were served and I landed up finishing the gumbo at the end of the meal at a little above room temp... and it was the soup's best taste moment.. for me.. I wonder if anyone else has this crazy about food temperature or is it just my friend gary and me. We often eat out together or cook for each other and friends and always we are the last 2 people to finish a meal because we don't dive in and eat it till it cools off a bit.

Wow I'm the opposite.
In general my biggest gripe when eating out is that the food gets cold too fast. I like a hot off the skillet plate of food. Yum.
Of course, the boyfriend likes his food cooled down a bit and gives me hell about my preference. Go fig. -
I was very underwhelmed by the food there. Service was good, but they need to spice things up a bit.

I don't like to eat food that's hothothot either. Plus I am the World's ... Slowest ... Eater, so most of what I eat is what most people would call "cold", anyway. -

i am the world's fastest eater, to the chagrin of my mother (whom you could have a slow eating contest with). i finish and everyone just stares at me and my empty plate. -
I had a very good meal at NoNo with some friends a couple of weeks ago. Its not like eating in New Orleans, but its pretty good and a whole lot closer to home. The service was very nice and we will certainly be going back. A nice addition to the hood.

i always wanted to try that place out. every time we pass it by none of my friends would go in with me cause its empty.

Bourbon St. is not, was not, and never will be the place for authentic Creole, Cajun, or New Orleans cuisine.
Believe me, this is one area in which i absolutely know what i'm talking about.
They've got the skills and the pedigree, but i fear they might be phoning it in on occasion, thinking that most folks up here won't know the difference.
Still, I give them respect. -
here here, erskelyne!

It is probably as good as you are going to get around here. Certain dishes are better than others (Alligator sausage - good; Seafood gumbo - bad). However, when my boyfriend needs a little taste of home, it fills the void in between visits to Louisiana.

Mod note:
The posts attempting to call out someone's profession without that user's permission have been removed. Not cool. -
erskelyne - i know this may be straying off topic - but i'm going to new orleans next weekend. could you tell me some places to go for the real stuff?
-
Sure. PM me with where you're staying and i'll be glad to drop some recommendations.
-
apollonia666,
So do you mean when I said.."so and so must be a waiter" I was calling out someone's profession?
Bottom line some of the posts that really had nothing to do with my trying to share an experience at a PS restaurant did get nasty and I appreciate that all that stuff was removed. Truly.. you don't have to answer to me. You are moderating and I am posting, reading and enjoying the work you and others put in. -
if you are going down there you have to go to Mothers -its near the French Quarter -definately more southern than cajun, but it is one of the most likely places to run into a famous musician in NO

willregistersoon - for breakfast you have to try Mother's. It is near the casino. Get the crawfish omlet with a side of debris. Mmmmm Mmmmm GOOD!
-
Mother's is AWESOME! make certain to get at least one meal there.

Yes. I highly recommend the debris po'boy there.
I haven't been since before the devastation. Does anyone know whether Uglesich's is still there?
EDIT: just checked, and it looks like it is. -
Ok - definately will check out Mother's. Is Cafe Du Monde really that good or is mostly hype?
-
i'd say "both". i think it's one of those things to "do" while you are there. but it'll take no time at all. a cafe au lait and a beignet will only take 20 mins. out of your life -- both a real tasty, and if you've been walking around all morning it's a nice place to sit and rest your legs!

Yeah, that sucks, but the Verti Marte is still rocking the Lower Quarter with grimy aplomb.
French Fry po-boys are the food of the gods (steak fries on french bread, covered in roast beef gravy) after a night of drinking and whatnot.
Though I could go for an "All That Jazz" sandwich right about now.
I mean really, who needs arteries? -
Cafe DuMond is a tourist trap, but a good one at that. The beignets come in orders of three, which is perfect for a nice suger buzz. Cafe DuMond is right across from Jackson Square and near the waterfront. You should go.
