Nah, you don't have to be a moderator. Here's how I did it:

    1) click "Search" link at the top the page (magnifying glass icon)
    2) put "knife" in the "Search for Keywords" field, "SterlingGuy" in the "Search for Author" field, then select "Search"
    3) in the results that come up, if you find the thread you want, you can right click over the name of the thread (in the "topic" column) and select "Copy Link Location"
    4) when you post a comment, right click again and select "Paste"
    5) highlight the url you just pasted in and select the "URL" button above the comment field; this will make the url a clickable link
    6) advanced technique would be to write something like "here", highlight that, and select the "URL" button. You will see some BBCode added before and after the word. replace the first word "url" with "url=" and right-click/paste the url there. Then the word "here" becomes a link pointing to the other topic you just looked up.

    Hope that helps.
  • Something like this happened to someone I know on St.Mark's right below Vanderbilt awhile ago. A group of young girls attacked this woman and stabbed her with a knife. They didn't try to take anything, they just yelled, "I stuck her! I did it!" which led cops to believe it was a gang initiation thing.

I'm glad you're okay. I know I'll get flamed for this but it makes me happy we are moving! Good for you for reporting this.
  • Shit, that's fucked up. I got kind of the same feeling in my situation - like it was an initiation sort of thing. When there's six boys and two girls and the girls are the ones trying to attack you, it doesn't quite add up. They at no time reached for my bag - or asked for money - they were only trying to swing something at my head. They could have easily punched me in the stomach or kicked me in the legs, but they were only going for the head.

This is so infuriating - what's going to happen to these kids when they're old enough to buy guns.

There is a serious problem in this neighborhood and it's obviously not being addressed. Violence happens anywhere, but this is another situation alltogether.
  • But what makes them being a certain age make a difference if they're going to buy guns? I'd be shocked if they go to a store to purchase they're first gun.
That's the scary and most dangerous part of this scene.
No rules to live by. Just peer acceptance.
  • awful incident but lets not predict the future of a few kids ignorance. peer pressure is a terrible thing. If we can turn that so called police office building into a youth center situations like that could be zero or at least a minimum
  • sorry the so called police building i am referring to is located on park pl and washington ave and if anyone knows of an address where i can create a youth center please let me know so we can work on it(new topic coming soon)
  • I agree there needs to be a place for kids to go - the community needs to offer something more, especially in the summer when there's nothing to do and no where to go.

A youth center is a great idea, but how about also utilizing space that is already part of the kids environment like the "playground/basketball courts" on St. Marks and Underhill at PS 11?

About one tenth of that space is usable. It's run down, most of the basketball hoops are missing and rusty and the area is not well lit at all. It's a shame and it has so much potential - but I get the feeling that the city or public school system would not put funds towards a renovation or upkeep since it's already in the state that it's in.

I don't know if it's a regular occurrence, but on one occasion, a group of kids asked me to move from one handball court to the other, the one that was in the forefront. They wanted the court I was on because it blocks the view from the street and sidewalk and they were all getting high.

I'm not passing judgement - but it's the fact that they know full well they can do that there because the space is practically abandoned and there are rarely adults or families there.

What would it take to have someone take interest in renovating that space - it could be so great for the community - does anyone know?
  • There is a committee at PS 9 (not 11) to renovate the playground. The committee meets the 1st Wednesday of the month at the school at 6:45. Please feel free to attend a meeting and join in the fundraising efforts.
  • I will do that, thank you so much.

elitt wrote: [quote=sje]Police have told me that for kids this age, there is NOTHING they can do, except contact the parents, that is if they catch them. The kids know it, and that's why they have no fear. Where do you think they learned this behaviour?

Sorry this happened to you. I avoid groups of punk tweens like the plague, for this reason.
then the only thing they'll understand is a solid beat-down - i would have no trouble administering

that's bullshit - the cops who told you that, sje, are not telling you the truth. kids can be punished for their crimes. they are given lienency when they commit their first offense but afterward, while they might not get anywhere near the same sentence as an adult offender, they do get sent away to a juvenile facility.

of course, the crap part about that is that kids just go to juvie and learn more about how to break the law. they don't learn that education and non-criminal existence is the goal. our legal system is retarded.
  • So what can be done with these kids? Someone on another post regarding the shooting at St John & Franklin mentioned seeing lots of young kids now wearing white tee shirts and red bandanas. How do you stem off gangs in the making before this escalates?
  • It certainly sounds like it has gotten worse.

Just Saturday, a friend and I were walking outside of the Atlantic Center, and a young kid (with two others) took his hand and ran it through my hair as he walked by. It startled the hell out of me, so I didn't have time to react. But, we stared each other down - me in disbelief, he in defiance. About 10 seconds later, he did it to another man.

These are young boys approaching grown men with complete disrespect and without fear of retaliation.

I hesitate to say this, but I really do feel it's a black/white issue. Flame me if you will. Call me a gentrifier (I suppose I am). Call me a racist (I don't believe I am). But, I'm calling it like I see it. These kids would never have done this to a grown black man.
  • You're right. That was extremely bold and confrontational in its own way. So what's the answer? More beat cops?? Black men getting involved to stop these kids before things get out of control with them?
  • Kids, ya can't beat the shit out of 'em...
  • WhyFi wrote: Kids, ya can't beat the shit out of 'em...
    Man, I really wanted to.
  • "But Officer, I was just teaching him a lesson on consequences that his absentee father didn't get around to..."

I'd buy it if I were holdin' the badge...
  • And if you did confront the kid, you could never know what his reaction would be. Could be he'd be trying to prove himself to his peers and that could be bad for you.
    So what is the answer???
If this doesn't get nipped in the bud at 12 or 13, they're going think they can do anything.... and can you imagine what'll happen at 15-16 when they're bigger and bolder???

Teenagers are obnoxious at best often times, give' em some power and let them run and the whole place is in trouble.
  • WhyFi wrote: "But Officer, I was just teaching him a lesson on consequences that his absentee father didn't get around to..."

I punched a kid who assaulted me in the face. When filing my report, I sheepishly admitted this to the officer who told me, "You did no such thing." When I insisted that yes, I really had (I don't know if I hit his face but I hit something--probably his neck since he was so tall), he looked me right in the eye and said, "Nope, you didn't." And that was that. If someone assaults you and you're defending yourself--especially when there's more of them than there are of you, they probably won't pursue criminal charges.

Seriously, unless these kids are caught or get their asses kicked there's no incentive for them to stop their criminal behavior.

My father was a biker and his advice if you're in a fight and surrounded: pick the biggest guy and attack him. Act like you are batshit out of your mind insane and chances are they'll back off. If you're surrounded you're kind of fucked anyway, so it's worth a shot. It worked for me.

My only other piece of advice is if you find yourself in a threatening situation in public--SCREAM--as loud as you can and call attention to yourself. People will look at you and the people surrounding you, which will make finding the people who assaulted you easier (unless the 'no snitching rule' is in effect, which is f'ing retarded). I ran after the kids after they assaulted me and yelled "Please help, these people robbed me!" -- before the police got there other people had pointed them out and they had a lineup waiting. I didn't get everyone but I pressed charges against the ones I did get. If you have to, single out one person and ask them to help you. It's pretty hard to say no to someone who is obviously in distress.
  • Props girl - way to handle yourself! Your Dad is absolutely right. Kind of like the scene from Sideways where they're on the golf course and the golfers behind them start veering towards them in their go-cart and the guy just goes apeshit with his golf-club - yelling like a crazy man.

One of the only ways of catching the kids is if you cruise around the neighborhoold in a patrol car with the cops - that is if they get there in time. But even then, there's not much to be done unless there's a serious injury or weapon involved.
  • I was coming home from a mother's day dinner on the 13th when a group of about 5 young teenage boys confronted me at Eastern Parkway and Classon. They tried tripping me and then one hit me really hard in the center of my back with his fist - nothing dangerous, but things could have been escalating behind my back for all I know. Suddenly an SUV rolled up onto the curb shining it's brights into the group and honking it's horn. The kids ran away and a got out and was yelling at them. Then he apologized to me that something like this would happen in our neighborhood. Thank you, kind stranger, for your four-wheeled justice-mobile.
  • Subject: Assaulted! Safety?

So sorry to hear that happened to you. As mentioned, it seems like you did all the right things. The good thing is you are safe and not seriously injured. I agree with the filing of the police report - it is your time, I understand and a pain in the ass, but it will help to raise awareness and make the neighborhood safer for everyone (in theory of course...I'm just a newbie).

I am moving to the area in the next month, I am a single white girl and I am wondering if anyone walks around with mace or actually feels the need to? Is this an extreme measure? Just trying to feel things out and be prepared....

    Thanks!

I was thinking about getting some - the cops tried to talk me out of it, as there are pros and cons, like it can be used against you, or the spray can end up in your eyes, but it would be nice to have SOMETHING. If only I had Pootie Tang's belt - then it would all be good.

However, the officers don't know if mace is legal or not.
  • I don't know about mace, but pepper spray is legal in New York. It's NOT legal to buy it online, though -- you can only buy it from licensed firearms dealers or licensed pharmacists.

I wouldn't go there. I much prefer the hard cover book in purse defense, or the always helpful just got a bottle of champagne at fermented grapes defense. if you're holding on to something it's pretty easy to swing it and nail someone somewhere. all you need to do is stun them momentarily so you can run for it. mace/pepper spray requires that you think about stuff like wind direction and that you're actually holding the stupid thing in your hand. also, if there's more than one person and you accidentally get some in your eyes, well, you're kinda screwed.

 Wait! are you advising that I keep a bottle of champagne on my person?? Purely for self defence purposes, of course.
 "Well, if I must....." She says as she books it to Fermented Grapes... :D/

I'm a fan of the "40 oz. in a bag" myself. Heavy and made of thick glass. But for some reason, in Bushwick, I don't see the as much shit as you people in Brownstone Brooklyn do.

From what I've read on this forum, south of Myrtle and north of Prospect park seems to be a hotbed for obnoxious teenage activity.
  • knitting needles, too. Sharp as fuck. I sometimes carry them in my hand if I"m walking home late at night and things feel sketchy.
  • erikka scares me.

    I like that.

  • Subject: Group of kids attack on May 16

Sorry to read about your scare -- but -- just a few years ago the kids might have had a real gun and this neighborhood was redlined because we were next to Crown Heights/Bed Sty. It is a great neighborhood and I have been living here off and on since 1980! 10 years ago we couldn't get cable TV and car windows were routinely busted just for a pack of matches (crack addicts). Things have changed but no matter where we live there will be someone looking for some action. A young woman was murdered here a few years ago, one can here gun shots now and then, a rapist was running around for a while, etc., etc.

We can't stop all of this but we can look into the faces of our neighbors, the children, the elderly, the not-so-hip, the neighborhood regulars. Say hello, look into peoples eyes, sit on your stoop. This is a real neighborhood -- some say that one block in NYC is like living in a small town. This is our town, our neighborhood, but things happen. Getting to know the kids on my block has been a real eye opener and they actually say hello to me!
  • You absolutely MUST report this to the police. Do not let them talk you out of it! If you don't fight crime, you are part of the problem.

I just want to clear up a couple of misconceptions on this thread.

This has been going on all over the city, the country and ... gasp ... the suburbs too. As far as I can see, lots of kids are playing "wannabee" gangster or beating up bums or setting them on fire or something. It's scary shit.

Oh, and the last time I checked, statistics show that black on black crime is far more prevalent than black on white crime.
