Census Bureau — Brooklynian

Census Bureau

Has anyone received documents ("for the American Community Survey")from the U.S. Census Bureau in the last month? I have also had cards left by a "field representative." Usually there are public announcements made about taking census info, but I have not heard of any.

Hmm. I haven't, and it sounded sketchy enough that I googled it; apparently, it is legit:

A quick look at the home page seems to imply that they're starting to tinker with the way the Census works, and this is one of the ways they're trying out.
  • I got home early and caught the tail end of an "Ask Asa" segment on the local NBC news. They were talking about a Christian Seniors organization of some kind that sends official-looking government-style documents that say "census" on the outside and also say "return within five days". I missed the beginning of the segment, but at the end Asa said that he contacted the Christian Seniors group and they say that there is no real reason for anyone to return the documents in five days - nothing bad will happen if they don't - and they use the word "census" because it encourages people to open the envelope. The Census Bureau says that they don't have a trademark on the word "census".
I checked the "Ask Asa" website (http://www.wnbc.com/askasa/index.html) for the story but it's not posted yet. The point of it was, check the return address to see who you're sending information to - it may not be the Census Bureau.
But if a rep left a card that does sound more like an actual Census...
