Park Slope Food Coop has a BLOG
a product blog
http://www.psfc.blogspot.com/
About two years ago, it was there and active and weirdly funny along with being informative. Now it's back from the dead with lists of new stuff and seasonal produce and whatever.
like frozen Quorn Gruyere Patties

and naturally raised, antibiotic-free lard

Cornichons, Garlic and Green Olives Mix Discontinued Due to MSG
Hello Cooperators,
It's a sad day in the Olive Case.
For the past few weeks, we've been carrying a mix of Cornichons, Garlic and Green Olives. Judging by the astronomical sales figures, many PSFC shoppers have been partaking of this mix.
This morning, we discovered that the Cornichons, Garlic and Green Olives mix contains MSG.
Damn, with the Rangers out of the playoffs, something's got to contain MSG! -
Are you serious about that, or was that a joke?
WTF is wrong with MSG? MSG is delicious!
They should just label it so that people who are picky about it don't buy it. -
Some resturants won't use MSG in their food. They write "NO MSG" , on the menu....I got a packet of soy sauce in my chinese takeout , and it says no MSG as well.....I remember a long time ago , lots of Chinese resturants were accused of putting it in the food....it was like a big deal , I guess.
I found this info on MSG a.k.a. Monosodium glutamate.
A 1995 FDA-commissioned report acknowledged that "An unknown percentage of the population may react to MSG and develop MSG symptom complex, a condition characterized by one or more of the following symptoms:
* burning sensation in the back of the neck, forearms and chest
* numbness in the back of the neck, radiating to the arms and back
* tingling, warmth and weakness in the face, temples, upper back, neck and arms
* facial pressure or tightness
* chest pain
* headache
* nausea
* rapid heartbeat
* bronchospasm (difficulty breathing)
* drowsiness
* weakness -

Yeah, MSG syndrome is real. But the vast majority of people get no symptoms at all from MSG, and most people who avoid MSG do it for no reason.

FYI- the Sazon product from Goya that is in a couple of the recipes that you've posted is mostly MSG. -
I know , and that's why it makes food taste great.
I was just answering your "WTF is wrong with MSG" , question.
I don't mind if my food has MSG in it.
My mom always used Accent which is MSG , so I grew up eating food flavored with it , and I haven't had any health problems because of it. -

Stolen directly from the co-op's website.

Just thinking of it, a couple of weeks ago I had an MSG-laden hot dog at MSG. And the Rangers lost in overtime.
A lot of pain came with that hot dog. -

Totally agree. It's just like being allergic to cats or lactose intolerant - sure some people are, but a lot more people just like to say they are. There's a certain segment of my family that seems to take great pleasure in comparing their often imaginary allergies and ailments.
I do not know the reason for this.
Also, be pro-choice and just label the olives. -
Ehhh - I hate MSG. Gives me a ringing sensation in the head (ok - worse than normal) and I don't think it tastes good.
Howdy, Stranger!
