Shots Fired

That's my corner and I didn't hear anything. The windows were open too.
-
I heard about 5 pops, and I'm on Park & Underhill. Not sure if they were shots, but I'm no expert on that. I didn't hear any sirens afterward.
-
Whadya expect?
-
i heard 5 shots. i'm on lincoln btwn underhill and washington. sirens followed 10 minutes later.

The police had an area taped off on St Johns at the NE corner of St Johns and Underhill (by the blue apartment building on the corner) when I walked by at around 10 am today. There were a few police vehicles and an ambulance there, but I didn't see anyone injured or any blood around. Of course this was obviously well after the fact.
I still can't believe I didn't hear anything. -
Yeah, I heard it around 1235am, 6 shots. Definitely in the direction of St. Johns and Underhill.
-
Could this be in any way related to the shots fired at 9:40PM last night on the cornor of Franklin and St John's???
-
Subject: Most likely related
They happened within a few minutes of each other. Craziness. I was about to ride my bike past Franklin and St Johns when it would have happened, but I got stalled luckily. I'm tired of the hatin' -
When I walked past there at 1:30 AM last night, I saw 5 police cars each cruising around independently between Underhill/Eastern and Underhill/Sterling. They seemed to be in search & scour mode. So maybe so.
-
I heard 5 shots at about 12:50 am. First 2 and then 3. I live on St. John's between wash and underhill, and my bedroom is in the back of the building. They were so loud that I jerked awake. That's the loudest I have ever heard them. They freaked me out. --julie

You know, I have to say that as a resident in the area for ten years, I really appreciate the fact that I can go on this board and find out what's going on in terms of crime. Things happen so fast- one minute shots, sirens, police tape, and blood washed away...all within a few hours. So its good to be informed....
However, I feel that shit is excalating. Anyone else feel this way?
I realize this area (crown heights/prospect heights in particular) is gentrifying at a really rapid pace, but something doesn't seem right...it's almost like a backlash to the growth...
Thoughts? Is it just me, or is the crime rate going up, like, dramatically? -

I have only lived here since 2001, and know quite well that I am part of the gentrification process.

I am not sure I agree that this stuff is escalating. People who have lived here much longer than I have told some pretty scary stories.
And I don't know that we can blame it on gentrification. I know that when something scary happens, we want to give it meaning, to understand it, but often, we have absolutely no idea why it happened.

I don't really think things are escalating at all. It's just that there's a bunch of people now who have somewhere to write "was that a scream/gunshot I heard on the street?" Which is a good and bad thing.

How do you know that? I wouldn't know how to start gentrifying myself, let alone my surroundings. Maybe there's some course I could take to learn how. -
I've lived in this neighborhood for almost 20 years and I think something bad is definitely going on right now...used to be that you'd crunch crack vials under your feet on what are considered the best blocks....then that ended in the mid-late 90s, but from what I'm reading on this board, and from the group of kids I saw yesterday on Vanderbilt at Prospect all wearing white tee shirts with red do-rags -- was this like a gang uniform? -- I'm starting to think that something is happening....I don't see how it's a 'backlash' against gentrification, though...more likely the kids go whereever they feel like they're not going to get chased out by cops.

My daughter heard the shots and saw the aftermath. Poor guy lying on the street shot at least once in the chest and a little boy crying nearby. She wasn't sure if the boy was with him or not. Looks like he was targeted for some reason.
Did anyone read the post from Prospect Heights last week of the woman who was walking home with friends at 10PM, left them to cross the street and was hit in the head from behind by two 12-13 year old girls? She said it was a bag weighted with something heavy and they were waiting for anyone to walk by. Never asked for money and started to rush her, when she yelled and they got scared. They were with 4 boys and it was felt it may have been an initiation. The boys pulled out what she thought were two silver toy guns, but the cops told the woman when she made a report that toy guns aren't sold in silver in the US, that they probably were real. They said there wasn't much they could do with kids this age except hand them back to their parents and the kids know it. Same story liked to that from a few months ago (I think) woman walking home alone and a 12 year old girl jumps out and stabs her and yells "I did it! I stuck her!!" and she and a bunch of young kids ran off together.
OK.....how does this get headed off at the pass before someone gets killed by these gang wannabes??
There must be something the police can do. -
My post above was regarding the shots fired on Thursday night at Franklin and St Johns, before this sets of shots were fired. I just struck me that it may have been related due to the timing and locations
-
Next time you hear shots, go out and look for a blood trail. Then come back and report your findings here. Simple.

Mr. Anti-Cop chimes in again with another brilliant "bon mot".
Perhaps you could share with all of us your award winning law & order plan. -
You know_it really doesn't hurt to keep your eyes open at night. The police ask for your help as you ride the subways. Keep your eyes open and give them a holler if you see anything suspicious. I guess you don't care to help protect yourself. The NRA believes in the idea that it is okay to arm yourself. I'm not asking ppl to do that. I'm making a suggestion to that seems to go over the head of brother brickie here.
Btw, the last post was a joke. That went over your head as well. If the police are not plentiful, there is no reason why ppl can't patrol and call in incidents. I don't know how long you've been here, but there was a time when the neighborhood folks got together, including families on Plaza Street, to patrol the streets, help citizens, and alert the police. No one is telling you to take the law into your own hands. The suggestion was as it states. Stop hanging out with the brick. It's very dense. -
Hey brickie,
Think of it as a form of home grown terrorism. Now what would you do? Hide your head in the sand? If the police aren't aware that someone is attacking your girlfriend or boyfriend, what will you do? According to you, nothing. -
There was a time when Lincoln Place between Washington and Underhill was blocked off because of a gunfight between dealers. Even the police wouldn't move in. How's that for action?
-
You want something better than that? Here's one. There was a time when the police would post a cop in a vestibule of a building. You get past the cop, go upstairs, one flight up, and there are drug sales going on through an apartment door. That's right...with the cop standing in the vestibule downstairs. The police thought that they would scare off the buyers, but it didn't work. Drug sales increased and, eventually, the police left. Where was this you ask? On Lincoln Place between Washington and Underhill Avenues.

The two dominant gangs in the area are the Bloods and the Crips. Most of the young hoods in the area want to join. I went to pick up my daughter from the Brooklyn Public Library at Grand Army Plaza over the summer. I had a scrape with a few wannabes. We went outside and I waited along side the children's entrance, next to the wall, when they, three of them, came out, I grabbed the one that was closest to me. The others got scared and ran off. Afterwards, I reported the incident to a scooter cop who told me that they have rights too. There was nothing that he could do about the incident. I made a complaint with the precinct in this area. Nothing was done. It is possible that the police are working there, the library, undercover.
