This is my first post ever to this board, though I've been lurking for a long time...

I just wanted to put in a plug for this place on union between 4th and 5th, called Palo Santo. Its the ground floor of a building about halfway down the block. They've been open for a while and I think they're doing pretty well,
but I went today for brunch and it was really quiet. Passed by Beso on the way and it was packed of course, and I wondered if anyone in there knew there was a place half a block away just as yummy and with far better service (sorry Beso, I love you but its true). Palo Santo is soooooo good. They have a small menu that changes slightly every time I'm there, and prices are reasonable (7 bucks for the yummiest omelette around, I swear). The food is really delicious and fresh. Also the place is so gorgeous and unique. The owner (Jack or Jacques, not sure how he spells it) designed the decor with local artists and craftspeople. He also cooks there. I've only been for brunch, not dinner yet. Looks like they are really into wine too there and have an interesting list.

Anyway, its an awesome addition to the neighborhood and I haven't seen much (or anything I don't think, correct me if I'm wrong) written about it on the boards. Try it. I so often go out to eat in the Slope or try places I haven't been and am disappointed. I've never been disappointed at this place, and the staff is so nice and take pride in the place and treat customers like family. Refreshing.

And no I don't work there.

xoxo

  • This place is AMAZING!! Pure and fresh. Gets my vote too. YUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
  • Go there for brunch on weekends. Damn good stuff, with a unique flair. Get there early though so you can get a table.
  • I went there the week it opened, and was so disappointed. The maitre'd was incredibly rude, and our food was really not good at all. Meat was SO fatty and stringy, potatoes were tasteless. We were so bummed, because it was such a cute place and we had such high hopes!

I had been hoping it was just a first-week-open kind of thing, and they just needed to iron out some kinks. I'm glad to hear other positive reviews... it makes me willing to try them again. Maybe for the brunch, since it's getting such raves!
  • Brunch is wonderful there and more importantly different from the standard fare.
  • What time does it open for Brunch?
