Youth Center Needed for our area

Afterschool programs provide childen and teens with valuable learning opportunities and fun times. Seeing afterschool programs reductively as a crime prevention strategy is unfair. Doesn't every kid deserve the opportunity to do something fun in the afternoon, on weekends, and during summers?

People have mentioned this but I would like to reiterate the fact that programs already exist, and the basis of getting these kids involved might start with putting their parents in the know. Parents tend to be aware as to whether their children are at risk but they may not know how to solve that problem. So, making parents aware of options other than more stringent curfews may be a solution.
In my experience in working with the youth, they need some way to transform their energies from negative into positive. The same kids that show EXTREMELY BAD behavior can become EXTREMELY GOOD at something else. It's their level of effort and the opportunities they are presented with that makes the difference.
If the point of this thread is to try to start something new, maybe a better approach to the something new you are starting isn't an actual program, but a way to make parents and the children AWARE of already existing programs. This is something that could be in the form of signeage, handouts, sign ups, etc.. in stores, building lobbies, pharmacies, train stations, bust stops, schools, and wherever else parents may be.
I would be available to volunteer my time to help with that sort of effort. I don't know what programs are available in this neighborhood, but I am willing to help in getting the word out to the kids and their parents.
