What Are Ghetto Kids?
Ghetto kids are kids who have no respect for anything. They attack people based on race, wealth and possibly sexual preference. They do not have anything to fear because they are too young for real jail. They have nothing to lose because anything they do will gain them street cred among their peers.
They attack my friends because they just don't like the way they look.
Cross the street when you see them coming.
Ghetto kids are of no particular race, it is more of a mind set.
Feel free to add to this.

Ghetto kids are kids who live in the ghetto. Some have no respect for anything, but most are all right.

Actually, you don't have to live in the ghetto to be a ghetto kid.

I don't have my OED handy, but I think you do. -

If you knew what was good for you, you would.

Okay, I'm going to take the bait here. Assuming that your very broad and general description is correct, how do you tell who is a ghetto kid and who is a kid that lives in the ghetto? How can you spot them and "cross the street when you see them coming"? You've already said they aren't a particular race so:
Do ghetto kids dress a certain way?
Talk a certain way?
Walk a certain way?
Or are you as guilty of sterotyping as the kids who assume that every white person they see is a "shook one"? -

You could be describing a high school sports team from Glen Ridge NJ. Who are white and suburban and affluent, so Not Ghetto. Words have meanings...not just whatever the heck you decide they mean.

Why the race trolling, Oiseau?
Nice one with the Elvis, Mamacita

i really, really hate that ghetto has turned into an adjective. it's offensive.

That's nothing. As a verb: "Let's ghetto that car". As an adverb: "Stop acting ghetto". As a gerundive in a past subjunctive construction: "Were it this neighborhood that was to be ghettoed in the 80s, we wouldn't be where we are now today". -

You are right I could be, thus anyone of any race anywhere can act ghetto. Just because I use it to refer to teenagers who go around throwing things at people's heads and harrassing people and beating and robbing people here in NYC does not mean I am refering to any one of any particular race. It is YOU who has assumed that I am refering to a specific race, not me.
Why the race trolling, Oiseau?
And if you are so PC then why don't you point out that Flo's orginal thread meantions the words, "black, maybe 15 -20.(years old) .hard to say exactly". I mean, who is race trolling here? Flo should have just mentioned that they were "maybe 15 -20.(years old)". She didn't have to mention the color of their skin did she? -

the way I read Flo's post was that she believed the attack was, in part, racially motivated. I though she stated it in a very plain, simple, unbiased way. she described her attackers and didn't say, for instance, that all black, teenage girls are demented demons or "I was attacked by some ghetto-ass black girls" either of which would have been extremely provocative and would have raised holy hell on that thread. this isn't a PC issue. rather, it's one of continuing the discussion of a topic without that discussion devolving into a disrespectful slinging of names and contempt.

I am not generalizing when I say ghetto kids, I am not saying all kids are ghetto kids. I am saying that kids who run around hitting white people in the head for no reason besides the fact that they are white, who show no respect for anyone or anything, well, those are ghetto kids.
As for contempt, yeah, I have contempt for ghetto kids, so what. They have contempt for me.
As I have stated, it is YOU who has assumed the racial aspect.
Now, have you ever heard of ignoring something that you don't like or agree with. Probably not, which is why you are a dictator and not a moderator. -
Ghetto kids are kids that go around being bad and hitting white people? How ultraspecific. Nice to know that kids who go around hitting anyone else can't be considered ghetto. Are they just kids being kids?
Knowing some kids from the ghetto myself, what do you think about this theory: white people are self-obsessed and think the average kid in the ghetto has no other interests than trying to rob/hurt them? Oiseau, cosign? -
Candicissima wrote: Are they just kids being kids?
Hmmm, maybe the times are a changing but the teenagers I knew didn't go around throwing things at the heads of people. Nor did they ever pick a fight with someone who was 15 - 30 years older than them.Candicissima wrote: white people are self-obsessed and think the average kid in the ghetto has no other interests than trying to rob/hurt them?
We're not talking average here. Of course those black girls who hit Flo were just average kids. The one's who assaulted Jesed on the model block were just average kids. The teenagers who allegedly tried to rob a deliveryman of his money, food and bicycle on May 11 were just average kids.
Give me a break.
Most people are good, but the few bad ones out there ruin it for the rest. -

Because kids just started being bad a few weeks ago? I'm sure back in your day no one was ever mean-spirited and rebellious as you treked 10 miles in the snow (happily!) when you missed the horse and buggy school bus.Oiseau wrote: Most people are good, but the few bad ones out there ruin it for the rest.
That's something I actually don't disagree with. I even feel that way about this board...and perhaps even this topic sometimes... -
Huh? Speak English please.

The romanticization of the word "ghetto" to apply to rich kids who day-dream about being poor can be offensive to people who have endured hardships in projects or slum areas.
"What Are Ghetto Kids?" This ghoulish question brings to mind people who suffered in Warsaw in 1940.
The word "ghetto" makes me think of people who are suffering because another, more powerful group has locked them into a thickly populated, dirty, dangerous slum area where education, health care, and other luxuries many middle- and upper-class Americans take for granted are not available. -
I think the ghetto just got Godwinned.

I was thinking venice. at least we could get decent licorice before we got locked in.
-
i hate ghetto kids. seems like most of them are located in the ghetto though, but not all.
last time i encounter 3 of them 2 weeks ago. I was going to a friends house in the ghetto.
kids across the street stop and pointed to me. I put away my phone. had my fist ready. just looking them down.
there were only 3 of them. generally i get trouble when there is more than 4. so i was thinking. i could probably take a few punches .
generally ghetto kids are pretty much cowards. they don't come after you, if they aren't in large groups or weapons.
we exchange looks for a bit and they walk on. -
The ghetto thread was dumb to begin with.
Let's all move on and talk about how Bush is a dickhead please.
Howdy, Stranger!
