Movers

Can anyone reccomend movers? I am moving to a new apartment. I can rent a truck or hire someone w/ one, either way.

Thanks

  • I've had Moishe's move me three times and they have always done a fantastic job. They were on time, courteous and efficient. Each time, the actual cost was less than the estimate (probably because I was a little sloppy in my estimating). I would move with them again in a second.

You can get a quote online from them. I thought they were reasonable.

They're on time, fast, super-efficient and won't break any of your stuff. They dis-assembled my monster of a computer desk and rebuilt it in my new office and somehow managed to manoever a one-piece couch round a tight corner into the hallway of our new apartment where I'd spent an hour measuring and still couldn't work out how it'd fit.

Like most moves, don't ask too many questions about their employees' working papers ;)
  • All-Star movers. (718) 643-4705 They did a fantastic job, considering I went from a duplex to the 4th floor of a walk-up on a hot summer day. They had to take down my front door to bring my sofa in too. Honest, friendly, professional and just the nicest bunch of guys I have ever met.

A good place to check movers is www.movingscam.com great message board and advice.
  • I second All-Star. They were amazing. I couldn't believe how fast and efficiently they moved my stuff. The smallest guy is always the one who carries the most!
  • I've used Moishe's and Movers not Shakers, and I can fully recommend them both -- honest, fast, and hard working.
  • I can warn everyone about a particular mover: He goes by the name of Andy, Andrey or even Andriy Zarvovskiy. Their number, which is the only real constant for their business based upon my search via google, is 718-238-8549.

They are bad news. The quote they give you will go up astronomically, and when you agree to pay more - they have the audacity to demand a 50% tip!

I used these guys to move me in the not so distant past. The move was only one block, but walk-up apartments were involved. First quote was $300. Then it became $400. Then they wanted a $200 tip. Apparently, the day of my move, traffic was very heavy from their Coney Island home. They even wanted additional money for the travel time TO my apartment. $600 plus travel! The whole thing took 4 hours. That's over $150 an hour for 3 guys doing manual labor.

I had no really big furniture, just bedroom furniture and boxes of books. I was moving out of a share into a solo job.

When I refused to pay their inflated amounts - they were almost threatening. My girlfriend was not happy.

So, the moral of this story is simple: stay away from this mover, and get a quote IN WRITING before the move starts. Do NOT tip. Tipping is for waiters and people who make less than minimum wage. Make sure the movers understand you are contracting with them to perform a specific task, and that no additional funds will be paid. Personally, I feel that no more than $25 an hour per person is reasonable.

Keep your cell phone handy. I couldn't get these movers to leave my apartment. They were fighting with me over the bill until I told them I would call the police.
  • I don't have any recommendations, but I can NOT recommend Meyer's Moving and Storage. We used them last year and the foreman got so pissed off at one point that he was yelling and cursing at me and throwing my furniture around. My super ended up calling the cops on him because we were so worried and upset. In the end only a few things were broken, but my fiance's leather jacket and our digital camera ended up missing. We have no proof they stole it, but it's the only possibility.
  • I actually used this service - www.movers.com - to find a mover. You post your requirements, and movers big on your move. I was a little skepticle, but the mover we picked - based on ratings and low cost - worked out really well. I'd use it again (but I don't plan on moving any time soon - hell no!).
  • I used Flat Rate Movers, they were very quick, efficient and careful. The three guys who did my move were really nice and they worked around my budget as it was fairly limited. http://www.flatrate.com/
  • I'm renting a uhaul to take some of my stuff back home, do any of the big companys like Moishe's provide just loading service - not transportation?
  • Another warning on who NOT to use: Fair Price Movers: http://www.fairpricemoves.com/

Yeah, they'll give you a fair price. And then they'll steal your shit. We're missing a TIVO box and a DVD player, not to mention my TV was obviously not secured in the truck because the picture is all askew now. I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt on that one, but then when we realized the other stuff was missing, I got PISSED.

I found them on craigslist and they didn't have any complaints on the BBB, so I went with them because they did give me a good price... obviously NOT WORTH IT.

I'd go with someone reputable, like Moishe's. I've never used them myself but have heard nothing but good things.

    Good luck. Moving sucks!

I hope you filed a complaint with BBB to help prevent similar problems for others in the future.
  • I'll second the recommendation for Flat Rate Movers. Fair, professional, on time and quick. Good stuff.
  • I just moved with Flate Rate and I have mixed feelings for them. Be 150% shure that everything you need to move is in the contract. They like to forget things in there paperwork. Take the extra insurance!!!! They scratched our floor , damaged my stove and did not rebuild some furniture. Broke the storm door and flag pole.
The people packing people were kind of lazy. Be sure the don't tell you they mover will do it! They actual mover were great and worked very hard.

    A.
  • Anyone know what is a reasonable price to expect for a move from downtown Brooklyn (ground floor so no stairs) to downtown Manhattan (elevator bldg so no stairs)?
  • my bad wrong lol link to the mover thread.
  • Looks like the best quote is around $500 for the 4 hours that I expect the move to take.

Question: what's the expected tip on this? Another $100?
  • here is the list of movers thread :p. earlier one was the wrong link.
