Mega fire trucks! What's happening?

Subject: Mega fire trucks! What's happening?

OK, way to many fire trucks whizzing around my neck of the woods. Anyone in GWH, SSP or SPS have any idea on what fire, where and how?

  • where is you seein thems?
  • 4th Ave, 5th Ave, 23rd St. upto 7th Ave...
  • Now we have a chopper hovering over the 20th St. area...

May have to take a break ad go take a look.
  • gothamist maps says there's a fire at 1901 8th Ave Brooklyn, NY
  • Gothamist maps says a fire -- 2nd alarm reported at 1901 8th Ave (at 19th). A quick Google reveals a place called "Bedding Inc" is there. I have awful visions of hundreds of burning mattresses giving off clouds of god-knows-what chemicals. Can anyone confirm what's at 1901 8th?
  • I just got in a little while ago , and the fire truck ambulances were in Park Slope rushing down Prospect Park West.

    Don't know what's up , though.
  • there is some kind of warehouse or deserted building on that corner (red if my memory serves)

    hope no one is hurt
  • Further Googlage reveals that in April, CB 7 approved a variance to allow the conversion of the 75-year-old building from commercial to residential use. (Apparently there is a mattress warehouse there now, doing business under several names).

Hmm. It's amazing how often these development sites catch fire, or collapse, at convenient times. Coincidence? Happenstance? Synchronicity? Who can say?
  • Sheat!

They were looking for funding to rehab the place after the potential BSA approval of the change of use. I saw renderings. It would have been really nice! Totally changed that block/area.

    Hope nothing fishy is aboot!
  • Heard the closed down the Expressway as well...
  • Our UPS driver said the fire was not as bad as it looked and all the workers & owner got out AOK.

Any more poop from the peanut gallery?
  • i walked by when the crews were just breaking up. didn't seem to be nearly as bad as it could have been, thank god.
  • I can confirm (from the horses mouth) that the no one was hurt, none of the machines used in the business were damaged, and that the fire was only in the recently (c. 1985) added "loading area" - the historic building, where the proposed adaptive re-use is to occur was left undamaged.
  • Thanks. I love happy endings! =D>
  • Do the happy dance!

    Ooh O , ooh O , here come's the hammer!

Break it down , hammer time! image
  • who knows more about the variance for this building from commercial to residential. when i moved in around the corner a couple years ago, he said it was going to be turned into condos. he said the same thing post fire...any idea WHEN this might happen. glad nobody was hurt. while suspicious at first, the fire was fairly small and seemed entirely accidental.
