new condos at Franklin and Eastern Parkway? And Starbucks??

The Mazon Discount store on Franklin and Eastern Parkway closed a couple months ago and it looks like they are cleaning out the building. I heard the space might be for new condos. Has anyone heard any news? It's a huge corner lot so I woudn't be surprised.

    Do you know the actual address? If so, you can check the Dept of Blds website for filings... it will say what is proposed

    It was only a matter of time before a Starbucks hit the area - ugh. I haven't seen or heard (or seen any other web site threads) anything on the space but figured it was going to be big. Thanks for the information.

    How is coffee from Starbucks? While I'm not much of a coffee drinker, I usually go to Joyce or Heights Lounge. Any opinions?

    I'm a tea drinker, not a coffee drinker, but just to stir things up...

    you could say that Starbucks initiated the nationwide trend toward gourmet coffee. Starbucks started out as a Seattle chain, then spread everywhere. Before Starbucks, coffee in most places was like Dunkin' Donuts or old-school coffeeshop-style. That's what most people drank, except for maybe a few conoisseurs in big cities (and Italian-Americans like my relatives, who drank espresso).

    You could say that Starbucks transformed American's tastes in coffee in a way analogous to what Alice Waters and Chez Panisse did with fresh locally grown whole foods.

    Personally, I don't like Starbucks that much. I drink my coffee black and find that Starbucks is overbrewed. It kind of has a burnt flavor unless you use milk, cream or flavoring to smooth it out. The brewed drinks are all okay for this reason, but they've got a ton of calories as a result.

    I'm partial to Dunkin Donuts coffee if I'm buying from a chain or almost any bodega coffee instead.

    There hasn't been much progress from a permitting perspective on this site. They had an application for a permit that was disapproved back in Jan. and nothing since then. Usually when an application is disapproved there are just some modifications that need to be made and then it is resubmitted. It shouldn't take this long to resubmit which tells me something else may be going on which could be delaying or even jeopardizing the project.

    I lived in San Francisco for 20 years before moving to New York a couple of years ago. In SF, there were a lot of mom and pop cafes that served excellent coffee. But I noticed that isn't much the case in NY. Crappy coffee abounds, which is why I get the success of Starbucks here. A lot of people think it's better than most. But in SF it was a lot easier to boycott it since we had other choices.

    I personally try to avoid Starbucks. But sometimes, if I'm desperate, I go in.

    You know, I remember a great Burmese restaurant there as well but I can't remember the name of it for the life of me. Yeah, the Bay Area in general has some excellent restaurants and WAAAAAAYYYY better Mexican food then in NY.

    However, NY's got them beat on pizza.....and crappy coffee.

    A year or so ago, there was talk about opening a Starbucks near Medgar Evers College somewhere over on Bedford. Guess they were thinking it would a good idea after putting one across the street from Brooklyn College (they got rid of the diner that used to be right there) even though there was one on campus already.

    yeah, a friend in the neighborhood told me just the other day that condos were going up there... and yes, a starbucks is coming along with it, across the street on eastern i believe.

    There was a good Burmese restaurant in Berkeley/Oakland, on College Ave, not too far from the Rockridge BART station. It is still there.

    I'm torn about Starbuck's - I'd prefer to buy from a local cafe, but I agree with the west coasters who say NY coffee is not very good! I drink my coffee black too, and Starbuck's is nice and strong and rich. Most other NY coffee is kind of watery.

    Don't be torn about buying from Starbucks. The taste of their coffee is a matter of opinion, but if you like it, buy it. There's absolutely nothing wrong with giving them your business. To my knowledge at least, they don't benefit from any unfair government largess (they are not ADM or Halliburton), don't have unfair patents or other monopoly status, and have earned their success by running a solid, well-run business. That shouldn't be penalized, as much as you want to help the little guy.

    I have a few friends that work for S'bucks and they definitely treat their employees well.

    So is it really true that they over roast their coffee so that it lasts longer? I hear that's why it's a bit on the strong and almost bitter side.

    Roasting the beans longer won't make them last any longer...and I agree with the notion that Starbucks has admirable business practices, they do treat their employees well and have championed Fair Trade coffees and have attempted to stabilize the sometimes volatile coffee market in order to make it more fair for the growers...but....they're really in the business of selling milk and sugar and their coffee isn't very good

    Although when you look at the options in this town, it's pretty damn good in comparison. I've found better coffee in a couple of places, but that's because I was lucky.

    But then, I know I'm being a snob.
