not sure what your question actually is. size ranges vary for all designers, both on the 'missy' and 'women' ends. a lot of designers have sizes 0 - 16 as missy sizes, and then 14 - 24 as womens sizes. obviously the cuts are different.

go to barney's, bergdorf's or the 'contemporary' floor of ANY vaguely high end retailer and good luck finding anything above a size 12 (and the 10 and 12 selection is limited).

all of that said, on the missy end of the spectrum, sizes fluctuate wildly and change on the whim of the designer, the size model and society's feelings about size (a size 4 this year at the gap was a size 2 probably 3 years ago, and a size 0 7 or 8 years ago).

so ... can you clarify your question?

Do I sense a bit of a joke in this comment? I think so. Fashion-wise it seems you are fat if you are even a size 8.
  • I was "slumming" {JOKE ALERT} on Fulton in CH yesterday...for those of you plus size ladies craving Forever 21 or H&M stylee clothes, there were two entire stores devoted to plus ladies, cute and dirt cheep. The stores were between New York Ave and, say Washington, sorry I did not get the exact addresses, but these stores were entirely plus, no waif gear whatsoever.

For incredible inexpensive stuff, NOTHING beats Fulton!

FYI, I just made a custom knitted bathing-suit for the "I Heart Brooklyn Girls" 2008 Pin-Up Calender, and I referred them to Lee Lee's for a plus suit for one of the models. It comes out in September. Very diverse this year, including more Brooklyn femme shapes & types. I can't wait.

Mod Note: Fixed the link for ya -- it just needed the "http://"; part added.
  • Ah that link didnt work and I am so curious... perhaps u can fix it? I knit.. I mean not scarfs but at professional level so I am so curious.. Thanks
  • thanks for fixing the link.
  • Subject: i heart brooklyn girls.

I am totally psyched about the I <3 Brooklyn Girls calendar.

I had a great experience at LeeLee's and will definitely go back when I have some money to spend.

SJE: I would love to see your knit bathing suit!

Also, Washington Ave & New York Ave don't intersect? So I am not sure what you are referring to...

  • Hey miss leather: the bathing suit's flickr set is here:

Sorry for not being clear, the two shops I saw were ON Fulton st, somewhere BETWEEN New York Ave and Washington Ave. Next time I go back, I'll get the exact addresses for you guys. I was attracted by some very cute halter tops and dresses in the window, and went into both shops only to find out they didn't carry my size {8}, only 12+! THe prices were comparable, if not better than H&M, etc.

Thank you ladies (you angels) for letting me know of these plus size stores. I recently moved here from the midwest and the best we did for plus size stuff was Target (muu muu's anyone). I've only been to Lee Lee's so far but if my experience there is what I will experience when i go shopping for this fabulous size 16 body, then I'm NEVER leaving NY. Lisa was so sweet and helpful and I swear it felt like a dream, instead of a choice of 4 varieties of tops or pants or dresses, I had about 15 different styles to choose from. It felt so good, i'm not ashamed to say that i literally cried. I have never experienced this bliss and to make my experience even better, Lisa started crying too, she said seeing me that happy, she couldn't help it (boy what we must have looked like). And the clothes fit, I mean really fit ME. And though I love my gram to death, it felt good not to own an outfit similar to hers (you know we get one style for all ages at Target). I was so happy, my family got a full fashion show (the extended version). Anyway, just wanted to say thank you again, to think I came across this site by accident........it was meant to be). I hope to visit the other two stores on Fulton Street (with my tour guide) in about two or three weeks (I kinda went a bit nuts at Lee Lee's).
  • Thanks for posting this info, I can't wait to check out Lee Lee's. I pass so many of these cute Brooklyn boutiques but have always been afraid to go in because I figure the biggest size they offer is a 6.

  • I'm so happy I was in that nabe on Sunday and stopped in...I love it! Cute things, and nice for us plus-sizers to have an alternative to the handful of Brooklyn big-box stores which cater to us. I bought two cute tops -- one casual, one dressier -- and wore them both yesterday, feelin' pretty sassy. And the customer service was terriffic -- really lovely young women working there who were very helpful......
  • I believe this is called "service journalism." Also, this is the only thread on the board that doesn't make me want to puke. Can't wait to check out Lee Lee's.
  • I went there this last Saturday and it was great. Lots of personal attention and the boutique experience, lovely clothes and at no time did I feel self-conscious or embarrassed because I wasn't a size 2. I bought way more things than I meant to! I highly recommend.

This is actually true. One of my colleagues often sets up photo shoots for book covers; he told me that in the industry, "standard" models are size 6 or below; if you need a size 8, you have to contact a plus-size agency. Which just shows how much the industry is out-of-touch wth reality, IMO.

well, model sizes have nothing to do with sizes of clothing in stores, that's for sure. at this point the average NY runway model is a size 2. when I lived in houston, I remember saks fifth avenue at the galleria complaining because they couldn't round up enough size 2 models in houston for trunk shows - the samples all came from NY in a size 2, and the average runway models in houston at that time were a size 4. I'm guessing they're a size 2, now.

in any case, I wouldn't consider a size 2 an average missy size.

same with plus size models - I think their size range is 8-12, with the size 8s being the runway models for the rare shows. but a size 8 is definitely not a plus-size.
  • As far as I know, plus sizes are considered 12 and up. "standard" sizes are 0 - 12. After almost 8 years, I can tell you that 0-4 sized gals are in the minority here in Brooklyn, the average size is about an 8.
  • Most of the plus-size "supermodels" are size 10-12. Ford, Wilhelmina and other agencies with plus divisions consider size 10 and up plus size -- though most of their plus models are 10-14, with maybe the occasional 16, 18 or 20 for catalog work on request.

That said, I could see them sneaking some size 8 models into plus portfolios. Agencies also often have a "diversity" division for older models and others that don't fall into runway/size 2.
  • So I went over to Lee Lee's this afternoon to find a dress or two for an upcoming engagement party and wedding (two different couples, I should note). While I was there, Lisa showed me look books/catalogs of what she's ordering for fall -- there are some AMAZING things coming in during the next few weeks, including at least a couple very nice coats...

She's also not done ordering summer things, so check back over the next week or two for new/refreshed stock, especially Tadeshi dresses. Wheee!
  • Yeah, Lisa showed me what she was ordering as well. Fabulous. I love this store.
  • I need to buy a new suit. Do they carry business professional wear?
  • not very much. if you need a new suit, head to talbots - they carry, in stock, both plus and plus-petite sizes.
  • Thanks for the tip. I checked out Lee Lee's today and it was lovely. I totally cleaned up, and though I dropped a lot of cash, I really got a lot for my money. Lisa was very helpful and energetic and we loved both her and her husband. My friend who is a size 12 also loved everything that she tried on. We will be living in that store!

    Here's the web address:

  • I finally found something to buy there and because I have such an issue buying dresses (I'm two different sizes on the top and bottom) I learned they also have a tailor that will alter things. I won't find out the price until I pick up my dress but thats good news. I'm very bad about bringing things into get tailored when I buy them. I still would like if they carried more sundresses that aren't made of polyester but I'm very happy with the cotton one I found.

The best I've found for plus-size business clothess is Saks, but it is soooo expensive that I have yet to buy anything there. You could easily drop a thousand or even two thousand on one outfit, however it would be beautiful. I'm told they have good sales. I also go to Nordstrom.com, look at their plus sizes, they have sales, too.

Slightly OT - A little tip for those high end stores - find a salesperson in the section/designer you like. Inform them that you are on a really tight, tight budget and could they call you when the suit you like will or is on sale. When I pick up my clothes I try to give them a little tip ($5-10) which they never accept so instead I send a nice note to the store informing them how helpful their salesperson was. You are happy, the salesperson is happy and now you have created a great relationship that will save you lots of $$$.

I went the store last week and was so happy to have so many choices. I also discovered some great new designers that I hadn’t heard of. Lisa was really sweet, and she gave all of us (there were at least eight other people shopping there) her personal attention. It felt good to have someone attend to you, I’m used to being totally ignored.
I walked out of Lee Lee’s with two dresses by Sangria, one Fashion Overdose t-shirt and of course the next best thing invented - spanks.
Lisa also told me about a beach party they’re having on July 21st…….I am so there, I do need a new bathing suit.

I went back again yesterday and got this fabulous pink gown by Tadashi, I feel very va va va voom in this dress
