We are moving and need to find a nice home for our 2 cats

We have two beautiful, well-behaved, affectionate male cats who need a
home. Riurik (pronounced "Roo-Rick") is an 8-year-old Russian blue.
Taras is a 6-year-old lynx siamese. Although they are not biological
brothers, they are very close -- they sleep and play together, and
groom each other. Both are healthy, neutured, with claws. See
attached photo.

We are moving in with family who are highly allergic to cats. I posted to Craigslist and got only responses from fraudsters.

We are looking to place them with a family that will love and care for
them as much as we do. They are best friends and we would like them to stay together, but may negotiate if a good situation presented itself.

We have a month until the move and will spend as much time as necessary to find them a wonderful home. Please let me know if you, or someone you know, is interested.

  • Hi Badger!

I'm glad you posted this. I'm the girl with the yoga mat who told you about this site a few hours ago.

Folks, I saw these two kitties this afternoon. Although it was hot as hell out and they were outside with lots of noise and barking dogs (by the school on 7th Ave. with the group that finds homes for animals), they were beautiful and well-behaved.

I hope they find a great place to live. My house is at maximum cat capacity.
  • Mods - can somebody sticky this?
  • Subject: Thanks, Flexichick!

After I met you on 7th Ave today, I took your suggestion and rushed home to post on Brooklynian. I really hope not to need to show them on the street again -- they are house cats and were scared. I brought them home, gave them a bath, and now they're cuddling (and hopefully not reflecting too much on the day).
  • They look super cute. I am at max cat capacity myself, but will keep my eyes/ears open for you.

Good luck finding them a loving home. And welcome to this forum.
  • Stickied!

Badger, good luck with finding a home for these kitties. Can you please let us know when they've been adopted, even if it's not through Brooklynian? I've been trying to update all these sticky posts about adoptable pets, and some of the original posters aren't responding to my requests for further info. Thanks.
  • I still haven't found home(s) for Riurik and Taras. We're looking into the North Shore Animal League, but apparently they can't take in more cats until the fall. We move mid-July, so still looking for options. Perhaps we can find a foster for 1-2 months until they can get spots at North Shore?
  • Can you possibly reconsider your living situation? It is so hard to find homes for adult cats. The "no kill shelter" sounds nice in theory but the reality is life in a cage. That's going to be really hard on your cats.

Have you tried listing them on muffins.org? I found a home for an adult cat by listing him with Muffins but he was a gorgeous long-haired cat and only about a year old. Still, it's worth a try.
  • Sorry you've had such difficulty. Did you try petfinder.com?
  • Any luck yet?

Here is a list of shelters to try, if you have not already. The warmer months are "kitten season," so don't be surprised if they only have room on their waitlists, unfortunately.

As you probably know, Animal Care & Control euthanizes, so that option should be avoided unless it's an emergency.

Also if you haven't already, make sure you're aware of the dangers of "free to good home": http://www.animalaidsw.org/free.html It’s important to carefully screen potential adopters, so that the cats end up in a safe and permanent home.

Have you created/posted flyers everywhere? Also (this may be obvious but) email their photos and or pass out flyers to everyone you know: coworkers, friends, family, your dentist. And ask they they forward the information to everyone they know.

    good luck!
  • FYI, I just checked in with Badger this morning since it had been a while since the last post. The kitties do still need a home, and they're moving mid-July.
  • Okay... I'm not sure whether these cats still need a home, but it's been two weeks since we last heard from Badger and I'm going to un-sticky this now.
  • Subject: The answer is maybe. Let's hope it will be yes tomorrow!

Unfortunately, no one in Brooklyn was interested, so a month ago I listed them on Petfinder through the Meriden (CT) Humane Society. There were 3 calls, and one family in particular seems good. We're taking Riurik and Taras to my in-laws in CT for the 4th of July, and have arranged a meeting with the prospective adoptive family.

Thanks for looking out for us. Cross your fingers!
