What the hell was that?

i heard it too and it totally freaked me out - i was scared it was going to hit the top of a building - thats how low it sounded.

I believe there's an air show at Jones Beach this weekend so it may have been a jet from the Thunderbirds or Blue Angels.
-
Freaked me (and the cats) out for a moment too until I realized, oh right, Memorial Day ... there's always some kind of military airshow.
-
Oh yeah.. That sounded like the end of the world, for sure!!
-
Yes about 7 Jets flew over and they were really low too.
-
They were F-16's, so it was the Thunderbirds. That's actually quiet for those planes; they can be much, much louder.
-
Yeah, I saw 2 of the f-16s from my backyard. I used to hear them all the time in STL and my dad IS an aeronautical engineer, but I guess its been a while--it definitely made me jump. lol.

I saw a couple of A-10s over my mom's house in CT this weekend. Those planes really look like they mean business.
-
I saw them fly over twice in the "V" formation, incredibly tight and incredibly low. I've never ever seen a plane fly that low over Bklyn. Color me shock-and-awestruck, with a little touch of gobsmacked.
-
i heard them, low and loud.
not to be a spoil-sport or anything, but i can't seem to imagine enjoying watching special planes fly over the city. don't know why that is... -

Funny you should mention that, I used to see A-10s all the time in CT as well. They're so ugly they're almost pretty. -
I saw them in "V" formation followed by a straggler T-Boid, fast, low and banking about 65 degrees to the right in Sunset Park as I was making my way towards Pacificana for a meeting of the palates.
My old man owned a two seat tandem back in the early '80's. We'd fly low and slow over the Slope before the FAA changed the rules. -
Wow, Idlewild -- I'm really surprised that they didn't change the rules about flying "low and slow over the Slope" after the 1960 DC-8 crash on Sterling Place. You guys must've had some good times sightseeing. The closest I'll ever come to that is browsing Google Earth.
And now I guess I know where you got your nick... from the airport, not the band! -

Give the lady a DeNoble. Indeed the rules were changed after the crash but for the opposite. No aircraft are allowed to fly faster than 250kts below 10,000ft. Which is weird because neither the United DC-8 or the TWA Connie were flying close to that speed. They crashed, for the most part, because they were flying blind in very dense cloud cover and collided. The new rules were imposed after the incident in all of the States and afterwards the world. As for my name, Idlewild means "Man of Wisdom and Passion Who Exercises Culinary Arts As Well As Sensual Arts With The Opposite Sex" in 4th century B.C.E. Latvian Berber.
