  • yap I love the yuppies and the hipsters .
  • they drive the prices up!
  • Yeah now you can bitch about a group other than the Hasidim... very productive stuff in the works.
  • Hopefully we won't end up like LES with a whole bunch of clubs and bars and drunks.

That'd be almost impossible, the way we're set up. And I doubt there'll be hordes of Manhattanites taking the trains in on weekends to party on Franklin and Nostrand aves.

We just need a nice mix of bars/cafes/restuarants for all the different types who live in the hood, so that WE don't have to head elsewhere to get our groove on.
  • I am happy to have a few more yuppies to support some different amenities but hope for a nice balance. Think Ft Greene, not Park Slope

    hilarious and very true.

i'm down with a fort greene-esque vibe in crown heights. that's for sure.
  • it does seem like crown heights has a more established community than other neighborhoods overridden by hipsters (as greenpoint is not eclipsed by williamsburg)

also, I'd like to thank the guy who sits on eastern parkway in the mornings and shouts, "white!" at me as I walk past.. that's classy
  • Subject: hipsters

Where have you spotted said hipsters?

True, but back in the 80s I remember how my Manhattan friends often cringed at the thought of coming into Brooklyn. Who would have ever thought Williamsburgh would be the way it is today? or Red Hook! If you had told me that 20 years ago I would have died laughing!
  • Hipsters abound. On St. John's and Albany I saw a blond biker chick walking a bit pull on a chunk-chain leash. A 30-something Russian lady I know walks her Irish Setter mornings in Brower Park. There are at least two interracial young couples on my block (one with a 2006 BMW).
  • I think this is all rather pointless unless we come up with an agreed-upon definition of "hipster."
  • A hipster is anyone that uses the word "hipster" :D
  • blksafyre wrote: Hopefully we won't end up like LES with a whole bunch of clubs and bars and drunks.
    or worse, Prospect Heights.

just walk into Soda Bar any night. You can find them there by the droves.
  • I'm going to have to hit this Soda Bar you speak of. I think I must have an entirely incorrect idea of hipster, as I am having a little difficulty reconciling the "blond biker chick walking a bit pull on a chunk-chain leash" with the tag.
  • I'll get the ball rolling. This is intended to be a preliminary brainstorming list, so please don't take it literally and feel free to detract from or build upon it.

    Hipsters:

    1. Are predominantly, though not exclusively, white
    2. Are between ages of 22-35
    3. Drink lots of coffee and beer.
    4. Read novels.
    5. Vote Democratic or Green.
    6. See movies at BAM Rose Cinemas, the Quad, Film Forum, etc.
    7. Wear clothing purchased at thrift shops.
    8. Take their dogs and/or children to bars.
    9. Are adventurous with food.
    10. Own, or wish they owned, a car.
    11. Have diverse music collections, but lean heavily towards indie rock.
    12. Love dive bars.
    13. Usually come from areas outside of NYC.
    14. Are college-educated.
    15. Champion racial and ethnic diversity, but have few, if any, friends of other races.
    16. Are generally creative and funny.

actually I believe it is anyone who refuses to be identified as such.

Hey, one man's hipsgter is another man's civilian. It's all in the eye of the beholder. Check last Sunday's "Hipsters in Our Midster" post at www.thecrowheightser.blogspot.com for photographic evidence of prospective CH hipsters. That is, if you can "reconcile" the image with your own subjective expectations.
  • your blog link didnt work

Eh. So your argument is that _anyone_ can be a hipster, and different people may view the same person as a hipster or not, according to their own set of values and expectations.

Wouldn't that kinda make the label, oh, I don't know, completely useless?
  • ok, the original post has GOT to be sarcastic, even though it's said not to be. it's still, GOT TO BE sarcastic.

What is this "I want crown heights to be.." "yay that it's changing.." I moved to CH 'cause I like how it is NOW, why else would you move to a hood? Why would you move to a neighborhood you weren't happy with? I don't want Ch to be the next fort greene... we have fort greene, to be fort greene. I like crown heights, with the guy on eastern parkway who screams WHITE at you, and all it's other amenities.

    Nope, not at all.
  • I am the original poster and I was not sarcastic at all.

I am very very very happy that my neighborhood is becoming more hip.

Why does everyone have scornful things to say about "yuppies" and "hipsters"? They are good people and they work hard they pay taxes and most of all the LOWER THE CRIME RATE IN THE NEIGNBORHOODS THEY "TAK OVER" therefore I welcome them.

Yuppies and hipsters lower the crime rate? Wow, that's one of the dumbest lines I've read on here in a long time (misspelled and in all caps too)--not to mention, obtusely racist. Why don't you say, "Yay, white people!" And stop hiding your trollish remarks behind "guest posts"? I'm all for diversity, but I don't consider that dirty-looking, bed-headed, holey-Diesel-jeaned, jesus-beard-wearing, tongue-pierced, emaciated, Fiji-water-drinking denizens automatically brighten up any urban landscape. But yes, they do drive the rents up, thankyouverymuch.
  • a hipster is someone who values nonchalance as their most important accessory

i'm not sure an influx bodes well for a sense of community

    Yeah......Okay.......

    Yeah racism!
