Dealing with stress in NYC
Something about the city is really getting to me and making me have jaw and ear troubles because of TMJ. I think I can fight it if I find great ways to reduce stress. If you can suggest anything that really works for you to vent the inherent stress of our metropolis please let me know.
I'm pretty athletic but have had a hard time finding basketball gyms or good playgrounds. I'd be into Yoga or some type of intense dance class....I don't know at this point I am open to just about anything. Thanks in advance.

Do you cycle?

Yes but I'm on a mood stablizer....I think that's what you mean by "cycle"
It seems to have done good in that is has restored a lot of my inner energy now I just have to find ways to vent it or it's gonna eat me up. -
I’ve found that running in the park really works for me. It’s a great way to meet people as well.

It is? I've never met anyone while running. Do you run up alongside people and strike up a conversation, or do you find yourself stretching next to someone while warming up/cooling down, etc.? Just curious. -
I find that 30 minutes on the elliptical at a really high level, followed by 30 minutes on the treadmill, does it for me. The Y on 9th Street is my paradise. The other gym folks are nice, the Pilates teachers are great (I haven't had time to explore other classes), and it's so great to see neighbors there as well. It's just a good, peaceful, invigorating, endorphin-filled experience.

Gee kind of thought that meant like ride around on a bike! -
For me, getting out for even a day can work wonders. I'd head north for a day trip or an overnight. No place exciting, just somewhere where you can hear a few hours of absolutely nothing.

I go sailing.
I used to have a high stress job, stressed all the time. A buddy I worked with took me sailing with him and for the 1st time in a long time I relaxed. Very serene being on the water, water lapping at the side of the boat -
I think yoga can help. More vigorous exercise, definitely. Running in the park relieves a lot of my stress... it smells nice, looks peaceful, etc.
Also, if you really can't find anywhere to play basketball, maybe another team activity? My boyfriend plays baseball on a weekly basis with a bunch of guys, and he always really looks forward to it.
Last thing... if you can work it into your budget, get regular massages. Find someone you're comfortable with and just make it a priority for you. Even if it's just once a month, or every other month. I've had some stress-related physical problems, and MAN is it worth it, even if I have to pack my lunch for a week...
Oh, and kickboxing! Great stress relief. -

Where? And can it be done inexpensively in NYC? I have an international license, but no boat and no club membership...
Judging by a recent thread, the Gowanus Yacht Club is not what I'm looking for. -
i think it's whatever works for each person. my stress actually gets worse with physical exercise. so i go the massage route (anthony from healthy bodyworks is amazing), or a hot soak, or a nap, or something as simple as a pint of ice cream and a good movie. anything to get my mind completely onto something else.

I prefer to run alone, but there are a bunch of groups that travel around the park;
There's the prospect park track club: http://www.pptc.org/about/index.php
Slope sports has free group runs: http://slopesports.com/groupruns.html
New York Road Runners: http://www.nyrr.org
There use to be a runners group that met at Circles, by the cinema at 7:00PM. I think they were affiliated with Nike, but I'm not sure if they still meet. -
BrooklynJack, seconding the question doctorj asked: Where do you sail, and can you give us a little more detail about who owns the boat, what kind of boat it is, what waterways you would typically navigate on a day trip, etc?

My destress method - ride my bike down to Red Hook's Coffey Street Pier after work and sit and watch the sunset. Will make you really appreciate New York's incredible beauty.
