  • I met the owners through friends of family, I dont think they can pick me out of a lineup so no real personal bias here.

Im also Korean, heres my review.

    - I had the pork ribs, and this by far is my favorite korean dish so im going to be a bit harsh here. My favorite versions were my step moms, cooked hot, not braised so its meaty and chewy. The glaze at moim's was too sweet, i kind of got what she was getting at, but I prefer spicy and chewy, vs the soft braise with the sweet sauce on top. I love a slow cooked southern bbq rib as well, but this wasnt a good mix for me.
    - bibimbop was very good, was more typical of what you would get at any good k-town place. Well done, but again this dish is kind of hard to screw up anyway. (everyone loves this, but to give you guys a background on the origins of this dish, it's basically korean's version of cleaning out the fridge, a mix of leftovers served on rice with fried egg LOL)
    - the short ribs were good, not typical korean recipe but very good.
    - im not normally a big fan of the chop chea, (clear rice noodles) but my wife loves them and i have to admit, their version is one of the best I've ever had. Served very hot, I hate cold or room temperature versions of this and had lots of flavor and lots of yummies mixed in.
    - side dishes didnt have the breadth of variety nor the usual quanity at most korean places, so im a bit miffed about that. But what was there was overall very good. I understand what she was going for here since most ppl are quite perplexed at the various small dishes that fly out at the onset of the meal. I think she is catering to her clientele here and its probably a good move.

Im not implying her menu has been unduly "americanized", in fact many of her items are very authentic and would go toe to toe with the best anyone has to offer.

Overall the whole evening was a great experience. I love having a korean place within walking distance. The chef takes great care with her food, and it shows. Even if you you're not a huge fan of Korean food, you should check this place out. If you are a huge devotee, make sure you judge this place in context. It's not trying to compete with the flushing and ktown places, I dont think that type of format would work here. On its own merits Moim is an excellent place to eat.
  • FINALLY made it to moim, and WOW. it was fantastic.

we had the sole carpaccio, jap chae, and beef short ribs. all was very good -- definitely get the jap chae if you like mushrooms. i think the sole was my favorite of the dishes we tried.

i was also a fan of my pomegranate ginger mimosa, and the gf's wine was very good, too.

i wish noona were more like this place. in fact, moim may just have filled my last vacant restaurant need since moving here from chicago. the one place we hadn't been able to replace was the fancier, somewhat americanized korean place we used to go to there. (jin ju, in andersonville, in case any of you get out there.)
  • Moim is such a great addition - been lots and lots of times since their opening - just great food and great owners (they live across street from us) and finally really good resto in this 7th Ave vicinity - here's hoping they celebarte that first and second anniversary!
