Loveseat / Small Sofa — Brooklynian

Loveseat / Small Sofa

edited November -1 in Park Slope
I am looking for a small sofa or loveseat (Under 70" long) preferably comfortable and ideally also a sofa bed. Looking to spend 150-300$

Any suggestions on where to look? I know I've been by some stores on 5th ave but I can not for the life of me remember where they are or what they are called. I wonder if they have a website?

The Jennifer Convertibles website only shows current promotions, not the entire stock.

Please let me know if anyone has any tips :)

Thanks!

  • There is an inexpensive furniture store on 5th ave between 15 & 16 streets. Also a couple of them between 40th and the mid 50's in bay ridge. I doubt they have a website.
  • In that price range it sounds like your basic IKEA loveseat. Ikea is really fine on basic furniture . Delivery charges are high.. minimum $100.
  • your only hope of finding something decent in that price range is used. Try craigslist

It will be tough finding anything 70" that is at lesat a full size sofa bed
  • i used to be a home design editor... sofas are more often than not 85-90 inches. loveseats are 68" and under. ergo, finding something in-between, a so-called "apartment-sized" sofa, sleeper, with a full-size bed inside is not an easy task. (remember, i'm the one who spent nine years finding the right sofa.)

for that price, if you want something new, you're going to have to go to ikea. i don't even know if they have anything that inexpensive. salvation army is always a good idea, as is CL.

    good luck!
  • That's a tough go at that price range. If you can, make an investment into something a bit more expensive. It'll most likely: be made with higher-quality woods and fabrics; provide better sitting and sleeping comfort; and best of all, last longer. Used couches, futons, etc., are a risky investment in the first place, and at your $150-$300 price point, who knows what'll show up at your door. Good luck.
  • Agreed on the price range and the frustration finding a "NYC sized" sofa. My wife and I have been trying for years to find something between 60-70," no mas!

And we can spend more than $300.

if anyone has any leads PLEASE post them asap :)

Of course, you could get lucky and find something on Ebay regarded as hideous in Kansas, that someone is getting rid of for little more than the cost of shipping, that would be several thousand in the window of an East Village boutique.
  • edited to say that this advice was meant for LIGH, since C&B is out of the $300 price range, sadly.

i just got this one, which is 69". http://www.crateandbarrel.com/family.aspx?c=934&f=12351

i LURVE it -- you can read all about it in the lounge. http://64.21.158.241/~brooklyn/forums/viewtopic.php?t=35020&sid=5126b7bd95f4bc30cfbbaa3e2dd2d1b1

incidentally, i find it quite roomy for being so narrow -- the arms are narrow, so the seating width feels bigger than other sofas of similar size i've tried. more like a sofa than a loveseat, if that makes sense. it is quite comfortable -- feels nice and firm with springs, not foam -- and looks classy, imho.

the only downside i can come up with: i am quite short, but i think if i had long legs, the depth of the seat might seem small.
  • thanks for the advice, all.

it doesn't need to be a sleeper sofa but i have a loveseat kipplan from ikea and find it rather uncomfortable.

i also have cats so i would need something that could deal with some scratching (reality) and hopefully implement a non-hideous slipcover cause washability is important with pets.

obviously my budget is tiny but i was thinking of this:

anyone have any experiences with this or jennifer in general? would love to hear some feedback - thanks!
  • Terrible customer service, but no experience with their actual sofas myself. Several friends have sofas and chairs of various styles and seem to be AOK with them. Delivery for them was a nightmare...
  • Uh oh--what happened w/ delivery?
  • tore up the sofa...TWICE. Had to get a new one...tore that one up...had to send a third. Guess third time's the charm.
  • that is nuts!
  • Jennifer has a really bad reputation--I'd avoid them if at all possible and go the craigslist route.
  • Do you think Craig's list is definitely a safer bet, though?
With bed bugs trauma and all?
  • lost, et alia, best bet for a smaller sofa: the mitchell gold showroom at ABC. yes, you can talk them down at least 10%. washable slipcovers area must. and get a plain neutral with good bones. (really, if you saw the sofa i waited nine years for, you'd think i was nuts. but i promise you that i will have this sofa for the rest of my life. unless i become homeless.)
  • Home Court Furniture on Court Street in Cobble Hill/Carroll Gardens specializes in apartment sized furniture. Its near the movie theater.

Wait where are Lost, Et Alia?
I am familiar with ABC Home + Carpet but it looked like everything was super expensive there...

i think she meant to direct that comment to Lostingreenwoodheights and to others (alia) who had asked. (and therefore the suggestion of ABC was directed towards LIGH, who said he had a bit more to spend)
