Coffee shop coming on Washington -- Fiddlers — Brooklynian

Coffee shop coming on Washington -- Fiddlers

sweet tea
edited November -1 in Prospect Heights
don't know if anyone else has noticed the work going on in the storefront next to ginger root (between prospect and st marks). i stopped in the other day and talked to the owner, desmond, who is planning to open a coffee shop in about a month.

looks nice inside. he's also planning ping pong and pool (quarter table -- at least, that's whats down there now) for the basement. and maybe darts. and maybe treadmills??? gotta admit, that part makes no sense to me, but whatever.

there's also semi-separate room on the first floor (a step up from the main cafe area, and with carpet) that he is thinking could be used for presentations.

seems like a lot to jam into one business, but it's great to see something else opening on wash, no?

  • another coffee shop would be cool. i hope you can just pay for your drink and sit down though (if that makes any sense). the main reason i don't go to saje more often is that if you stay there, they serve you, and then it makes a basic cup of coffee cost a lot more with tip. if i pay at the counter i usually leave a dollar, but with table service i feel compelled to leave at least $2.

that's a bit off topic though. i welcome coffee in as many places as possible! and, ya know, treadmills too i guess...
  • Hmmm, ok, we'll see. I hope it happens but the owner has been "trying" to open a coffee shop here for years. about 18 months ago there was a lot of construction activity there and they were supposed to open "within a couple weeks." That turned into "in a month or so" and then nothing happened. Hopefully this time will be different.
  • i would be so psyched to have another coffee shop!

and i'd rather have a performance space rather than treadmills and presentations
  • Without crossing over Flatbush, where do you folks go for your morning cuppa joe? Muddy Waters? Joyce? Somewhere else?
  • I heard from a source several months ago that the guy was going to use the basement for a spa, so people could get coffee on their way to work and unwind after work. I think there's a lot of extremely bizarre outside of the box thinking going on in that guy's head.
  • hilarious, alafairnadia.

I prefer Joyce cause they make some super strong coffee.
I love the super sweet mochas at Shane's though.

i don't think there even IS a box in his head.
  • The place has been a month away for years. Crossing fingers, but not holding my breath. I think that the Thai place across the street will open before he does...

thai place? any recon on this? would be great to have if it's good quality. lemongrass has really gone downhill and thai taste is too far away.
  • Did I say that? Oops.

Eeep. I'm for thinking outside the box, but while one can manage a great cafe or a great spa, I suspect someone trying to combine the two will do a half-ass job at both.

you mean you don't want a coffee-scented steam room? a rancid milk massage? what's wrong with you?
  • I'm lactose intolerant, but it also seems that it takes a long time for soy milk to become rancid.
