seeking 1 1/2+ br, prospect heights, August, $1200-$1300
My boyfriend and I are looking for a place starting in August. Prefer a real person or smaller company as a landlord, some sunlight and at least 1 and 1/2 br (or a 1br with a large, flexible living area). Must have a bathtub. Limited budget, $1200-$1300 range. Could maybe stretch to $1400 if included access to any outdoor space (yard/rooftop/porch - we are experienced organic gardeners). Prospect heights vicinity.
About us: we are from Charlottesville, VA and in our mid-twenties. He's an electrical engineer, bicycle enthusiast and amateur machine builder. I manage a small inn and recently worked on a city council campaign. We're friendly, responsible and easy going.
Any leads would be much appreciated!

Craig's list, of course.
Finding something bigger than a 1 bedroom for that budget is unlikely in Prospect Heights, but definitely possible in Crown Heights.
Good luck and welcome! -
Thanks for the feedback. We're okay with bordering areas like Crown Heights. Although I guess not Park Slope due to reported danger of pregnancy. Basically, I want to be within walking distance of the botanic gardens/brooklyn museum. But a longish walk is okay.
So far we have only been visitors to Brooklyn but are really looking forward to making it our home.
Even though we're not moving until August, I've been browsing Craigs List posts for a few months. The turnover between ad date and move in date seems to just a few weeks. In the university town where we live now, big landlords have so much control of the market that people are often signing leases 6-9 months in advance! -

Hahaha!
I've found that stuff tends to move fast here, weeks is right, days in some cases. I'm not sure what "longish walk" is to you, but you should be able to find something decent (why do I feel the need to make air quotes???) in that price range if you look for a bit in Crown Heights, under a mile from the museum. -

The museum/gardens are closer to Crown Heights than Park Slope

Also, Prospect Lefferts Gardens borders right on the eastern side of the park/garden. -
Subject: In town Aug 5-9, any indy press to recommend?
So we will be in town Aug 5-9 to look at apartments and hopefully sign a lease starting late Aug or Sept 1st.
Besides Craigslist, we've heard the Park Slope Coop is a place to look for apt flyers. Any other suggestions, like maybe some independent print media?
Thanks for all your replies!

Walk around areas that you like. Often you will see signs with phone numbers. Also ask people sitting on a stoop. For instance, at one point I happened to know that there was a studio available for rent in my building, but there is no sign and the landlord was not currently advertising it. But I would give his number to anyone asking while he finished up the reno., and they would have an inside track to renting it.

Subject: found a place on Dean st
Thank you for everyone's helpful replies.
Sept 1 we are moving into a 1br with xtra room for home office on Dean street between Washington and Union. I guess we are just over the border of Prospect Heights but we are happy with the location and the price is right at $1195/month. The three story rowhouse building is not fancy or particularly well maintained but it will do and the landlord recently acquired it and will be doing a bit of work before we move in (painting and a few repairs are part of written agreement). He seems to be into several kinds of businesses so we also get 20% off at his liquor/wine/beer stores with our lease. Woo hoo, can't beat 20% off booze! -
Congrats! And it is good that you got the repairs listed in the agreement too. Welcome!
Howdy, Stranger!
