deli on 5th and Carroll
I just want to open this by saying that this deli is great and I've stopped in every day for the last year that I've lived in the neighborhood, sometimes more than once, often late at night, for one thing or another. Both daytime and night time staff have always been pretty nice. Its not your typical bodega, they have a lot of healthier options, organic canned foods, nice cheeses , stuff like that. All of which really bums me out now, because I had such a bad experience there yesterday...
on Thursday night I stopped in on my way home to buy a pack of cigarettes. The cigs came sealed in cellophane as usual, but when I opened them the inside foil was ripped and there was a crumpled filter with no paper or tobacco at its end, in there with the rest of the pack. It was obviously a faulty pack that shouldn't have come off the line. But it was late and I thought well, no big deal, I'll just go back to the deli tomorrow and exchange it. I did go back, in the afternoon, and the guy behind the counter told me to come back at night to speak to the guy who had sold it to me. Which I did, and when I did, the man was incredibly rude, shook his hand in my face, and basically told me to f**k off.
This might seem nit picky, but come on. That guy knows me. He has seen me EVERY DAY for the last year. You can't exchange a lousy pack of cigarettes? So un neighborly. I've been in the service industry for years and that was bad service. They've got my eight dollars, but they no longer have my business. (At least until I break down and need something late at night.)
Just needed to vent ya'll. Thanks for reading.

That sucks. He may never even realize that he lost your business (if you hold out). I usually try to say something right on the spot so that they can see the connection between acting like an ass and their bottom line. Something along the lines of "After doing business in your store EVERY DAY for the last year, do you really think I'd come in and lie about a pack of cigarettes? If so, I'll be happy to take my business elsewhere".
And on a side note.....$8!? I'm so glad I quit smoking back in 1990 when cigs had just passed the $2 mark -

Yeah thats pretty much what I said. A little more angrily though. Maybe I'll go back later and try again, in a calmer state.Flexichick wrote: And on a side note.....$8!? I'm so glad I quit smoking back in 1990 when cigs had just passed the $2 mark
Its ridiculous. -
Just don't go back.
Try 5th ave Market across from Lobo (the tex-mex place).
The guys are nice there and they have a good selection and good sandwiches. They're my late night shop. -
Yeah I like that place a lot too. Amazing sandwiches.

5th and Berkeley has awesome deli. Organic and hard to find items as well as great, CLEAN deli. Staff are friendly and welcoming.
Pricey, but good. -
I'm so sorry about your experience.
I remember one night a few years ago, hanging out in Moutarde as it was closing. This was when Hassan was bartending there (he went to Miami, leaving several of us in the lurch for a good bartender who'd experiment with cool cocktails for us), and the manager (at the time) named Jacques ran across the street to the deli for a wheel of Camembert. That night we sat at the bar (two girlfriends and I) with Jacques and Hassan eating cheese and olives and mustard and carrots and bread, with exquisite wines and cocktails - a real picnic, in a way - and an incredible Park Slope experience.
But as a former smoker, DANG, they should've done the neighborly thing. -

absolutely. i have a question for the OP: was the guy you had to speak with your regular guy, the same one you've been doing business with for the past year? i only ask because if it's the same dude, then screw them -- take your business elsewhere. but if this fella was not your regular guy (i know you said you stop in both day and night, but perhaps this was an off time) he's the wrong one to speak with (i know -- the other guy told you to. you did what you were told). in my experience, the regular daytime crew usually consists of the manager and even perhaps the owner; these may be the persons you need to speak with. since you feel this deli is great, it may be worth one last ditch effort on your part before you throw in the towel and go somewhere else.
no matter what, it's their loss. even if they don't lose your business, they've lost your trust. shame. -
I hear you. I'm certainly never one to place blame on an employee who has nothing to do with the situation and is just trying to do their job. Like I said, I'm a service industry veteran, and I know how hard dealing with the public can be. But regardless of whether they were willing to exchange my purchase or not, they could have dealt with me in a more respectful and kind way. It still pisses me off that the dude wouldn't even look at me, just waved his hand in my face. What if a customer came up to my bar and said, "Hey, theres a fruit fly floating in this drink that you just served me, can I have a new one?" and I put my hand in his face and told him to f**k off? Unacceptable!
Anyway, I may try again tomorrow night. I'll keep you all posted haha! -
Oh I forgot to say in response to that last post...the daytime crew are not the owners, I'm almost 100% sure of that. The guys in charge work at night. Which is why the daytime guy told me to come back at night: he wanted me to take it up with his boss, the one who had sold me the smokes in the first place.

I had the same thing happen to me at that place with a 6-pack of beer.
I used to go in there all the time, they know my face, are always very nice. But one night a friend and I went in and bought a six-pack at night. The guy working was the one I always assumed was the owner, for some reason. We got them home, opened one each, and after a gulp realized it was BAD. Like, completely gone-off, undrinkable bad. We immediately took them back (it was only 20 or so minutes later.) And the guy refused to give us another 6-pack, because two bottles were open...
I was completely dumbfounded. And he was rude, all he would do was close his eyes, shake his head and say 'No!" It was crazy.
I still go there from time to time, and since then everyone has always been lovely. But it definitely put a bad taste in my mouth about the place (Both figuratively and literally!) -
That is EXACTLY what he did to me. Such a strange way to run a business. I'm sorry that happened to you, but its nice to know I'm not the only one!
I know I'll go in there again, reluctantly though. -
Yeah, another vote for the guys across from Lobo, at 5th and Berkeley. They're our go to guys. Always nice and they know us and talk/joke around with us each time we're in. Good selection and solid guys.
There's no reason to put up with stuff like that when you have other, more courteous options just a few blocks away.
Howdy, Stranger!
