Fairway--do you find a lot of rude shoppers there?
Is this related to the "why I hate Park Slope thread?" Maybe. But I am not sure why many people shopping at Fairway don't know the words, "excuse me" "thank you" etc. I am always amazed. When I shop during the parents hour (mornings) I can kind of see why people get grossed out by parents (and I am a parent now). I saw people, baby in bjorn, shoving their carts in front of other people and then standing there obliviously staring at yogurt. (And then I saw a gay guy make some nasty comment "breeders" and for the first time, I was on his side). I saw a guy leave two 5 year olds screaming and hitting each other in a cart while he wandered off to look for a creamier brie. Hello? Your kids are killing each other. But it isn't just the parents. People get into that store and all sense of decency seems to go out the window on the quest for the perfect Italian Prosciutto. Yes, I will continue to shop at Fairway but I gotta say, is this the part of the Park Slope personality that is pissing people off (or the new entitled Brooklyn?). At least at the crappy Key Food in WT, people still say excuse me, oops sorry as they reach for the chicken fingers laden with trans fats.

I shop at Fairway every two weeks but I never thought of it customers as just a PS demographic - I mean don't you think it just may draw a few people from other 'hoods?

How long has there been a Fairway in PS?

Yes obviously it attracts people from all of Brownstone Brooklyn and then me, from Aluminum siding WT. But is it Park Slope people hate or a certain kind of person that is becoming more and more prevalent in all of Brooklyn? -
There is no fairway in PS..lol.. It is in Red Hook..and don't forget it!
I haven't been there more than 6 times since it has opened but Fairway has been a pleasant experience for me in every way.. shoppers and staff and the over abundance. -
Never had a problem in ANY Fairway, and I've shopped in all of them.
No issues, especially in Red Hook and the one in West Harlem. People come out of the woodwork in both places to help, and the cashiers are generally people persons. Some even have a great sense of humor.
Kids can be brats no matter where they are or where they're from.
Especially when sibling rivalry is involved.
And so can their parents, when you're dealing with the tunnel vision that isn't unique to this part of the world.

I love Fairway! The aisles are a little tight, but the staff is helpful, and the cashiers are fast. Plus, they actually say "hello" and "thank you", which is something the WT Key Foods (I shop there too) is generally lacking. About 1/2 of the cashier there act like you interrupted their deep thoughts if you come to their register.
-
I didn't have a problem at fairway with that kind of behavior. I do however experience what you're describing at the co-op. People don't say excuse me and they're kinda rude. It's weird and not my style, so I make sure to behave the way I want to be treated and just shop at off hours when I can.

lol, that's a good one Flexichick...interrupted their deep thoughts! that's good. I agree that the cashiers often look like they are staring off into space and it does seem you're interrupting them when they have to ring you up, but I would say that is a generous characterization to say they are capable of deep thoughts. When I've been selfish enough to interrupt their conversations so I can pay for my groceries, they are frequently talking about other girls they know (this one has a big butt, that one is a skank, etc.). I've never heard them debating any major existential issues.
However, I have to give them credit that they are generally pleasant enough and I've never had anyone there be rude to me. They even once let me take my groceries home and bring the money back when I was short. Now, if they could do something about having the prices they charge match the prices they have advertised, that would be something!
Big love to the Prospect Ave Key Food. -
I'm feeling generous ;-) The only cashier at Key Foods on Prospect Ave that I like is the older (since the others are teens/20s) lady with the greying curly hair. She's actually friendly.
I just made dinner with some of the tastiest sun-dried tomatoes I have ever had - from Fairway. Very "tomato-ey". I couldn't find the simply dehydrated tomatoes (not in oil) until somebody there showed me (yes, at Fairway EVERY time I have asked for something the person will walk me over to exactly where it is) where they are. They're in little plastic tubs on display on a pole near the cheese stand. -
People can be kind of clueless and oblivious in Fairway. But really, when it's crowded, it can be hard not to inadvertently cut off someone with your cart, or block the cheese they were going for. I haven't found people there to be aggressively rude. And it is definitely not just Park Slope people shopping at Fairway.

What the heck is "Brownstone Brooklyn"? Please enlighten me. Because I have seen some amazing brownstones in Bed Stuy, Crown Heights, even East New York. Is that is where these rude Fairway shoppers hail from? Don't think so. That is why I hate Park Slope (sometimes). -
i agree with every word Flexi said, both re: Fairway and re: WT Key Food.
i've never experienced the bad behavior you have, WTGirl. my favorite time to go is sunday morning at 10 AM. -

The Fairway staff is excellent. They are really nice and helpful. The WT Key Food staff is mostly highschool girls. My neighbor's daughter works there and she is a typical teenage girl interested in clothes, boys and with often poor social skills around adults. She is "old Brooklyn" with a heavy Brooklyn accent and from a working class family saving for college. She is quite nice. Now the prices and the stale old food is another story.
Yes the aisles are crazy and it is claustrophobic at Fairway when it gets crowded. I guess I am just used to saying and hearing "excuse me" especially in a crowd when you know you are ramming into people and cutting them off.
But takes these same people OUT of Fairway and put them on 7th Avenue with a stroller and all hell would break lose for them not saying "Thank You" for having a door opened or "Excuse me" for cutting someone off at Barnes and Noble. Just sayin' Maybe it is expectations and what you are looking for. I am now looking for rude people at Fairway and finding it and maybe some people are looking for rude parents on 7th Ave and finding it. -
Oh, and Fairway sometimes has BAGGERS....woohoo! Getting people at Key Foods to actually bag groceries is a challenge...and I'm not even talking about expecting them to do it alone (I always help).....I sometimes feel like I could have a stand-off where if I (remember -
the customer") didn't want to bag my own stuff and the cashier didn't want to either, what would happen??? -
In the name of all that is good and holy in this world, people must learn to follow the yellow arrows.

y'know, i had something sort of like that happen on friday at pathmark. since i am forced to bag my own groceries, i like them packed a certain way (hey, if the cashier wants to help me bag, i don't really care much how they're bagged). apparently i wasn't bagging fast enough for her taste and she got snotty with me. she never tried to help, mind you, but she had no problem mouthing off. it was really bleepin' annoying. -
joncane wrote: In the name of all that is good and holy in this world, people must learn to follow the yellow arrows.
Yeah... MY probelem is that I didn't grow up with those yellow arrows indicating crowd control because there was no crowd control necessary in my local grocery in Bronsville... where I grew up!
Yeah Bronsville... and I grew up in a Brownstone.. and it was not located in Ps, Bklyn Heights, Boerum Hill, Bed Sty.. ect..
I am not hostile.. just kidding.. late on Sun nite!! -

I have this same subtle yet defined stand off at Ctown on 9th Street. I really do want to be specific as to what goes in which bag because it is easy on the other end. If all the frozen Itens are togeth, all the pantry items together... ect....
the customer") didn't want to bag my own stuff and the cashier didn't want to either, what would happen???
But If I start to bag while the checker is moving the food through then she thinks it is MY job and lets me do the whole bagging things... and even glares at me if by the time all the groceries are scanned I HAVE NOT BAGGED TJEM!!.. Other scenario is I bag with intent... but the checker just starts to stuff things in where ever and I UNPACK certain bags and repack knowing what I need. I get the real Brooklyn glare on those trips!! -
I bag my own stuff at Fairway because I bring back all of their 10,000 bags and reuse them. They usually help me.
If you don't reuse the bags, what on earth can you do with THAT many bags? I use some to scoop out the cat litter box. When my kids were in diapers I could use them to wrap up a dirty diaper. But holy god that is a lot of plastic. Anyone have good ways to reuse that much plastic? -
Totally in agreement.. I have 2 Maltese dogs who use wee wee pads most of the time. It is 70-30 split on inside vs outside so yes the plastic is now slowly decomposing or not in landfills but Plastic bags really are the downfall.. Even when I wtach my son's large breed dog he can not use enough plastic bags to justify their existence.
Mostly when I shop.. I bring the shopping cart and some plastic bags and use them and just place larger items in the the shopping cart... It is hard to be ecologically sound or correct but we all must try in our own little ways!! -
Yeah, too many plastic bags from Fairway. I end up throwing away most of them. I don't know why so many single items end up with their own bag -- double-bagged too.
-
I can't figure out why so many of our Fairway bags end up ripped... they're not confidence inspiring when it comes to pickin' up after your dog...

I have found that most of the rude behavior in Fairway is by people who live in Windsor Terrace. -

They always get in your way when you're trying to scope out the yogurt... -
I was at Fairway yesterday (the one in Red Hook not the one in PS that people from WT seem to prefer). Here's what I saw:
1. About 100 people in the store shopping
2. By observation I would say that 50% were Caucasian, 25% were people of color, 15% were Asian and 10% were other (probably from WT)
3. There were many men shopping
4. People were friendly and courteous
5. Lots of traffic jams but all handled with good humor and smiles
6. My wife and bagged our own groceries and even took extra bags that we use solely for the purpose of picking up our dogs poop
7. The check out clerk, with a huge smile on her face, when asked to split the bill on two charge cards, refused and put $30.00 more on mine because she liked my wife better than me.
I love Fairway. I love it's cafe on the water. I love it's prices. I love it's egalitarian nature. I love it's plastic bags. And I love that it doesn't discriminate against people from WT. -
Fairway is- BY FAR, the best grocery store in the area... Yes, the aisles are friggin impossible to navigate when there's more than two people in them but I'll gladly take some friendly maneuvering in exchange for all they have to offer in terms of selection, prices, etc...
AND, friggin' hats off to the management there... They make sure the checkout aisles run SMOOTH AND, that the staff are helpful AND friendly... something the management at Target or any other big box store can learn from. -

Wow, they have brownstones in Bronxville? -

In parts of Europe they charge you a couple cents for each plastic bag you use, or often take a couple cents off if you bring your own - works perfectly, and is such a great idea. [/list]
